Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- The Prophecy of the Throne is a narrative-focused tactical RPG developed by Chime Corporation and published by Spike Chunsoft Co., Ltd. that expands the Re:ZERO universe through an original, fully canonical side story. Rather than simply adapting scenes from the anime or light novels, the game offers a fresh political thriller set in the Kingdom of Lugunica, carefully overseen by original creator Tappei Nagatsuki. This approach immediately sets the experience apart from many licensed anime games, positioning it as a meaningful extension of the source material rather than a retelling meant only for fan service. The story takes place roughly one month after Subaru Natsuki’s arrival in the fantasy world and centers on the Royal Selection, a pivotal event meant to determine Lugunica’s next ruler. The premise quickly subverts expectations when a mysterious sixth candidate appears despite prophecy stating there should only be five, throwing the political balance into chaos. From there, the narrative leans heavily into intrigue, paranoia, and shifting alliances, drawing Subaru into assassination plots, false accusations, and competing agendas. Fans of Re:ZERO will recognize the familiar themes of helplessness, trust, and psychological pressure, but the game’s story also stands on its own, making it accessible to newcomers willing to engage with its characters and political drama. Gameplay is divided between exploration, information gathering, and tactical combat, with the strongest emphasis placed on preparation rather than raw battlefield execution. During exploration phases, Subaru navigates compact environments, speaks with allies and suspects, and uncovers clues that influence upcoming missions. These segments are more than narrative padding; the information you collect directly determines which allies participate in battle and how effective they will be. This design reinforces the idea that Subaru’s greatest strength is not combat prowess but his ability to observe, reason, and plan around others’ abilities. Combat itself unfolds in turn-based tactical encounters where Subaru is the only fully controllable unit, while allies act according to strategies determined beforehand. Rather than micromanaging an entire party, the player focuses on positioning Subaru, managing an action gauge, and ensuring mission objectives are met before turns run out. This structure is unusual for the genre and may feel limiting to players expecting full squad control, but it fits the narrative logic of Re:ZERO, where Subaru often survives not by overpowering enemies, but by orchestrating events and relying on others at the right moments. Success depends heavily on prior preparation, making failures feel more like planning mistakes than mechanical ones. One of the game’s greatest strengths is its presentation of character interactions. The cast of Re:ZERO is brought to life through detailed illustrations, expressive dialogue, and full English voice acting, which was a notable first for the franchise in an international release. These performances add emotional weight to conversations and help sell the tension of political conflict and personal mistrust that defines the story. New characters introduced specifically for the game are well integrated, feeling consistent with the world’s tone and themes rather than awkward additions. Visually, the game uses a stylized approach that mixes chibi-like exploration models with more detailed character art during story scenes and combat. While this aesthetic may not appeal to everyone, it keeps environments readable and reinforces the game’s tactical clarity. The soundtrack complements the experience well, shifting between subdued, tense tracks during investigation segments and more dramatic compositions during combat and major story moments. Together, the audiovisual elements successfully maintain immersion even when the gameplay slows down to emphasize dialogue and planning. Despite its strengths, The Prophecy of the Throne is not without shortcomings. The tactical systems are relatively shallow compared to dedicated strategy games, and players seeking deep mechanical complexity or extensive customization may find combat repetitive over time. Some interface and camera limitations can also make certain encounters feel awkward, particularly on PC, reminding players that the game’s design priorities lean more toward narrative delivery than mechanical refinement. Additionally, the pacing can feel uneven, with long stretches of dialogue occasionally interrupting gameplay momentum. Overall, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- The Prophecy of the Throne succeeds most as a story-driven experience that respects its source material while experimenting with a hybrid tactical format. It may not redefine the tactical RPG genre, but it offers a thoughtful, character-focused adventure that captures the psychological tension and political complexity fans expect from Re:ZERO. For longtime followers of the series, it provides meaningful new content and insights into its world, while players drawn to narrative-heavy strategy games will find a unique experience built around preparation, consequence, and the fragile balance of power. As the world's biggest Re:ZERO fan, I had a fun time playing this game but do have some issues with it. It's mainly a visual novel (with a few gameplay sections) and has a non-canon story that replaces Arc 3 in the actual series. This game is best enjoyed if you love the characters and world of Re:ZERO and want to see more content of them (and an awake Rem) but there isn't much beyond that. It doesn't have any of the emotional moments that made the original story such a masterpiece and handles the death scenes quite poorly, simply turning the screen red to simulate blood which makes them lose most of their impact. As I said earlier, if you just want to see more content and humour of the world of Re:ZERO and its characters then I think you'd have a fun time with this game but I definitely recommend waiting for it to go on sale as it is not worth 60 dollars.

Short but sweet, not too much nor too interesting gameplay but the story and the banter between characters really made me feel like I was watching the original anime. If you are missing the world of Re:Zero this is a great game to tide you off. Play this for a short but entertaining story with a dash of strategic gameplay in between.

The story is pretty good but the gameplay segments are not fun. Definitely not worth full price. But if you like Re: Zero, pick it up when it goes on sale for like 80% off.
