Just want to preface that I already platinum trophie'd this game on PSVita a couple years back so I already have a positive bias towards this game before buying it again on Steam. I must say that playing it again on PC feels like meeting old friends. So I want to start off this review with the PC/Steam version of this game. I think Aquaplus dropped ball the here by locking the framerate to 30fps. This is understandable on the PSVita but unacceptable on PC. I remember seeing the trailer for this game being ported to PS4 and it was at 60fps. That meant that Aquaplus showed and proved that they can make their game run above 60fps but for some dumb reason, decided to lock the frame rate for PC players. There is a mod on NexusMods that fixes the resolution of the game but unfortunately does not unlock the frame rate. Luckily for me, there's Lossless Scaling. So if you have the mod and Lossless Scaling, you can play this game with the proper resolution and 60fps. Lastly, there's a glitch in Dream Arena where the game will crash if you defeat Moznu. This happens when you fast forward animations during this stage. So for this stage, do not ff or skip animations. Just bear it for this stage. Next up is the gameplay. Obviously, Utawarerumono MoD is a visual novel first and a tactics JRPG second but we'll focus on the combat for now. The combat in this game is simple but satisfying and fun. You have 2 difficulties, normal and hard. I've never played on normal mode so I don't have much to say about that but I recommend playing the game on hard for a challenge. The attack and Final Strike animations all look great and are very flashy. When you attack an enemy, you unleash a chain of attacks by pressing the A button (on controller) at the right time. Pressing the button at the right time results in a critical hit. These critical hits can deal anywhere between 30 to over 100 points of additional damage. It reminds me a lot of Legend of the Dragoon and I find it very enjoyable. You can even evade and defend against enemy attacks by pressing the A button at the right time as well. Getting the crit when evading and defending either increases or decreases your zeal depending on the character. Though the combat is simple, the zeal system adds depth to it. Upon reaching 100 zeal, your character can unleash their Final Strike. You can manage your zeal by choosing not to complete your attack chain in exchange for an additional turn that will allow you attack again, unleash a full attack chain, and finish with a Final Strike. It is incredibly fun. After the main story battles, you have the Dream Arena, which are post game battles that are very difficult. The Dream Arena challenges your understanding of the game's mechanics as well as each character's own unique mechanics. Each character has their own strength and weaknesses: - Haku is balanced. He's hits hard, gains zeal easily, is able to heal and grant zeal to party members, tanks a lot of hits, has moderate speed and movement, and is able to survive a killing blow and get max health back - allowing him to fight for twice as long as other characters. I'd say his only weakness is he can't escape ZOC's and he can't counter. - Kuon is fairly balanced. She hits harder than Haku but can't survive as long as he can. She's a great healer with about a similar amount of speed and movement as Haku. Her greatest strength is her insane ability to rack up zeal, allowing her to unleash one Final Strike after the other. She also has a longer attack range than most melee units. - Rulutieh starts out strong when you first get her but falls off in terms of damage output as you progress. She has moderate speed but high movement. She is excellent at trapping enemies with her ZOC and is also able to help teammates escape from enemy ZOCs by pushing them off with her Yuri-Ne attack. She is also able to regenerate health whenever she takes her turn. - Uruuru & Saraana are your hardest hitting magic damage dealers. They have low speed and poor movement but they more than make up for it with their insane attack range and high damage output. Keep them as far away from the enemy and they basically deal free damage for you. - Nosuri is an archer that with a long vertical and horizontal attack range. She is fast with high movement and hits really hard. She also has a close range attack that allows her to escape ZOCs. Her only downside is she can't tank much damage and gets one shot or two shot often. - Ougi is the best. Once Ougi reaches the higher levels, he becomes an insane asset to your team. He has the high speed and high movement. His damage is moderate but he is able to counter melee damage and also has highest number of attack chains in the game. He is immune to ZOCs. His greatest strength is Enkan! With Enkan, Ougi can nullify all damage so long as he has enough zeal to use it whenever receiving an attack. I was able to defeat Munechika in Dream Arena one on one using Ougi alone with her 8000+ HP, as I nullified all her damage and Ougi just slowly chipped away at her health while leveling up at the same time. His only weakness is ranged damage. Ougi cannot nullify ranged damage and will fall easily if there are too many magic users or archers targeting him. - Nekone is your best healer. She is able to both heal and attack in a single turn. At the start of the battle, she spawns a familiar, which can be used to distract one enemy for one turn. When she receives damage, she spawns another familiar, one that you cannot control but can still distract the enemy. She has moderate speed and low movement. - Kiwru is another archer with a bit more range than Nosuri. His strength lies in his ability to act twice in one turn as long as he stays in one place. He can either heal and attack or attack twice. Attacking twice not only deals double the damage but also gives Kiwru double the EXP, making him very easy to level up. His weakness is that he is useless when stuck in a ZOC with no enemies within his attack range. For this reason, a good unit to partner him with is Rulutieh, who can free him from a ZOC. - Atuy is your hardest hitting physical damage dealer. She uses a spear so she has more attack range than other melee units. She has moderate speed but very high movement and is sometimes able to attack twice in one turn. She has a close range attack that helps her escape ZOCs and she is also able to counterattack. Her weakness is survivability. She is a bit of a glass cannon. - Jachdwalt is your tankiest character who also hits very hard. His strength are in his counterattack stances. He also has a ZOC that traps enemies. If you use him properly, he can wipe a lot of enemy units. Keep him healed and he can counterattack enemies left and right til they fall. His weakness is his low movement and moderate speed. Last thing I want to say about the combat is that the attacks have very good visual effects and sound effects. All attacks that look like they hit hard do indeed look and sound like they hit very hard. Attacks that look like they don't are also reflected in the visuals and SFX. A++ on the sound design. Speaking of sound design, being a visual novel, the game has to have great music, and indeed it does. All of the music for every type of mood and situation in the game is appropriate for every scene. Words cannot describe how insanely good the music in this game is. Aside from that, the voice acting is also top notch! I don't want to talk too much about the story for fear of spoiling it. But I have to say that it is the story that made me fall in love with the Utawarerumono series. The characters, their personalities, and their relationships to one another. By far, my favorite thing about the story is watching Haku grow. He starts off weak and lazy but really turns into a leader that is trusted by his comrades. Man, there's just so many good things about this game. I can't recommend it enough!

Stunned, shook, in awe, blown away... These words are words that I can use to describe Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, yet none of these truly convey my feelings on this title. The sequel to the also mesmerizing Prelude to the Fallen, Mask of Deception doesn't hold back on what made the first game so good. The political tension, the world building, the story, the narrative, and the characterization are still all here, and perhaps it somehow even does these things better. Yes this game is a juggernaut of a visual novel/Strategy JRPG. The gameplay while still pretty basic, is improved from Prelude. It's not going to win any awards for JRPG depth, but it tightens gameplay just a bit and adds small QOL features to make it just feel better than Prelude. Don't go in expecting Fire Emblem, but for what it is the series does the job fine. The main focus of Utawarerumono is the story and narrative, and the gameplay just supplements it. I truly feel like the only element I may have preferred in Prelude was the initial world building. I loved being slow dripped into learning who Hakuowlo was and being introduced to the villagers. But that's not to say that Deception has a bad initial start. Like Prelude it is deliberately slow, but it has an even better payoff in my opinion. I also admit I may have enjoyed the opening hours of Prelude more solely because I was brand new to this world. If you start with Deception, then you may enjoy this opening more. And before you go "wait, Deception is game 2, why start here?" You absolutely can start here first if you desire and it is an argument to be had. Starting here first, and then moving back to Prelude afterwards gives you a sense of mystery that you don't have when starting at Prelude first. It's kind of cool. But personally I think doing Prelude first and then Deception is the slightly better way because there are a lot of emotional moments that you won't understand until after you play Prelude. So it's a trade off. Do you want a cool mystery? Or do you want these moments to feel more emotional? In the world of Utawarerumono, I personally choose the latter. Plus playing Deception first makes it a lot harder to hold off on Mask of Truth. Overall Mask of Deception is a Visual Novel masterpiece just like it's predecessor. It features some of the best world building, narration, and characters ever put into a video game. It's a world that is very niche, but those who have experienced it know just how special this series is. This series is turning me from being very interested in JRPGs into a full fledged JRPG obsessed gamer who just wants to play them all. If you are a story lover and have the patience to see the "slower" starts as deliberate, you MUST try the Utawarerumono series. Trust the devs on this one and you will be greatly rewarded.

100% at 65 hours in: Review unchanged. the pacing picks up though. Still don't like how they made Kuon's "ka na" into something that needed to be integrated into her sentences but that will only bother those who are listening as well as reading at the same time. 50% of game progress at 30 hours in: It's great. Whereas I am usually a fan of translation versus transliteration, the amount of enjoyment the translation team got out of this one in general is pleasant to see. As an intermediate level weeb, I understand some Japanese though and at times the translation is rather liberal... And can we PLEASE stop translation Kuon's "ka na" as "I think"??? "I guess" or "methinks" (the latter fitting rather well with the verbiage that is used in general) would have suited it far better in general. There are a few more pacing issues versus Prelude to the Fallen, but in general the story is stumbling from strength into strength and it is highly enjoyable. The main characters are all unique and great, even if the protagonist takes a bit of getting used to. He may be too human at times for muh escapism ;) I do wish some more care was taken with the audio mixing. The supporting music needs to SUPPORT, not TAKE CENTER STAGE and it took some effort to get the balancing right on my end. It looks like this (the numbers are approximations, there is no numeric display for the values in the menu and no I am not exaggerating anything): - Master Volume: 100% - BGM: 10% - SE Volume: 20% - Voice Volume: 60% And with that, time to get back to figuring out who it is they are singing about~ ---------- Original review: First I was like ?_? But then I was like !_!

my personal favourite #1 visual novel game, long time Utawarerumono series fans, this is my 3rd time re-playing this game, best prequel/buildup title, for the more amazing game : the mask of truth. very good story, very interesting characters, beautiful world building, epic ost, and i love everything about it. sadly the anime adaptation doesn't do justice for this series. it lost a lot of character interaction that would bring sweetness, smile, and laugh. thats why i keep coming back to play this game again.

I first played the old visual novel (VN) called Utawarerumono many years ago during a time when I was super into reading VN’s. With the help of passionate fan translators, I was able to experience an incredibly rich story with many different characters and a really fleshed out world with so much lore. The gameplay was very basic and simple, nothing too special, and there were awkward sex scenes thrown in that seemed there just for the sake of helping sell more copies. This game is a sequel to that old visual novel, and it pretty much plays exactly the same as I’ve just explained the first was, but this time without any awkward sex scenes. Plenty of ecchi fan service, though. The gameplay, while better than the first, is still really nothing too tactical or special. It’s awfully simple and easy. You should only play this game is you like visual novels, because despite it having gameplay, that’s what it mostly is. A visual novel. It’s a very long visual novel with one of the most beautiful artstyles I’ve ever seen, with such an expansive cast of characters and quite honestly, a somewhat Tolkien-level of world building. It was all so very interesting, and it having a very helpful codex where you can read entries for just about everything they mention in the story. From something as simple as a sweet, a speciality dish of food, various culture and words and their meanings, even character bios that update over time as you progress the story. My favourite part being everything is fully voiced, even your protagonist, which is very rarely voiced in a VN. The voice acting is top-notch and the story is a BIG ride. I’ve been playing this game on and off since 2022, but that’s not at the fault of the game, but me by constantly getting distracted by other games I want to play. The ending of this game made me want to play its sequel immediately afterwards, but alas my backlog demands otherwise.
