Just want to preface that I already platinum trophie'd this game on PSVita a couple years back so I already have a positive bias towards this game before buying it again on Steam. I must say that playing it again on PC feels like meeting old friends. So I want to start off this review with the PC/Steam version of this game. I think Aquaplus dropped ball the here by locking the framerate to 30fps. This is understandable on the PSVita but unacceptable on PC. I remember seeing the trailer for this game being ported to PS4 and it was at 60fps. That meant that Aquaplus showed and proved that they can make their game run above 60fps but for some dumb reason, decided to lock the frame rate for PC players. There is a mod on NexusMods that fixes the resolution of the game but unfortunately does not unlock the frame rate. Luckily for me, there's Lossless Scaling. So if you have the mod and Lossless Scaling, you can play this game with the proper resolution and 60fps. Lastly, there's a glitch in Dream Arena where the game will crash if you defeat Moznu. This happens when you fast forward animations during this stage. So for this stage, do not ff or skip animations. Just bear it for this stage. Next up is the gameplay. Obviously, Utawarerumono MoD is a visual novel first and a tactics JRPG second but we'll focus on the combat for now. The combat in this game is simple but satisfying and fun. You have 2 difficulties, normal and hard. I've never played on normal mode so I don't have much to say about that but I recommend playing the game on hard for a challenge. The attack and Final Strike animations all look great and are very flashy. When you attack an enemy, you unleash a chain of attacks by pressing the A button (on controller) at the right time. Pressing the button at the right time results in a critical hit. These critical hits can deal anywhere between 30 to over 100 points of additional damage. It reminds me a lot of Legend of the Dragoon and I find it very enjoyable. You can even evade and defend against enemy attacks by pressing the A button at the right time as well. Getting the crit when evading and defending either increases or decreases your zeal depending on the character. Though the combat is simple, the zeal system adds depth to it. Upon reaching 100 zeal, your character can unleash their Final Strike. You can manage your zeal by choosing not to complete your attack chain in exchange for an additional turn that will allow you attack again, unleash a full attack chain, and finish with a Final Strike. It is incredibly fun. After the main story battles, you have the Dream Arena, which are post game battles that are very difficult. The Dream Arena challenges your understanding of the game's mechanics as well as each character's own unique mechanics. Each character has their own strength and weaknesses: - Haku is balanced. He's hits hard, gains zeal easily, is able to heal and grant zeal to party members, tanks a lot of hits, has moderate speed and movement, and is able to survive a killing blow and get max health back - allowing him to fight for twice as long as other characters. I'd say his only weakness is he can't escape ZOC's and he can't counter. - Kuon is fairly balanced. She hits harder than Haku but can't survive as long as he can. She's a great healer with about a similar amount of speed and movement as Haku. Her greatest strength is her insane ability to rack up zeal, allowing her to unleash one Final Strike after the other. She also has a longer attack range than most melee units. - Rulutieh starts out strong when you first get her but falls off in terms of damage output as you progress. She has moderate speed but high movement. She is excellent at trapping enemies with her ZOC and is also able to help teammates escape from enemy ZOCs by pushing them off with her Yuri-Ne attack. She is also able to regenerate health whenever she takes her turn. - Uruuru & Saraana are your hardest hitting magic damage dealers. They have low speed and poor movement but they more than make up for it with their insane attack range and high damage output. Keep them as far away from the enemy and they basically deal free damage for you. - Nosuri is an archer that with a long vertical and horizontal attack range. She is fast with high movement and hits really hard. She also has a close range attack that allows her to escape ZOCs. Her only downside is she can't tank much damage and gets one shot or two shot often. - Ougi is the best. Once Ougi reaches the higher levels, he becomes an insane asset to your team. He has the high speed and high movement. His damage is moderate but he is able to counter melee damage and also has highest number of attack chains in the game. He is immune to ZOCs. His greatest strength is Enkan! With Enkan, Ougi can nullify all damage so long as he has enough zeal to use it whenever receiving an attack. I was able to defeat Munechika in Dream Arena one on one using Ougi alone with her 8000+ HP, as I nullified all her damage and Ougi just slowly chipped away at her health while leveling up at the same time. His only weakness is ranged damage. Ougi cannot nullify ranged damage and will fall easily if there are too many magic users or archers targeting him. - Nekone is your best healer. She is able to both heal and attack in a single turn. At the start of the battle, she spawns a familiar, which can be used to distract one enemy for one turn. When she receives damage, she spawns another familiar, one that you cannot control but can still distract the enemy. She has moderate speed and low movement. - Kiwru is another archer with a bit more range than Nosuri. His strength lies in his ability to act twice in one turn as long as he stays in one place. He can either heal and attack or attack twice. Attacking twice not only deals double the damage but also gives Kiwru double the EXP, making him very easy to level up. His weakness is that he is useless when stuck in a ZOC with no enemies within his attack range. For this reason, a good unit to partner him with is Rulutieh, who can free him from a ZOC. - Atuy is your hardest hitting physical damage dealer. She uses a spear so she has more attack range than other melee units. She has moderate speed but very high movement and is sometimes able to attack twice in one turn. She has a close range attack that helps her escape ZOCs and she is also able to counterattack. Her weakness is survivability. She is a bit of a glass cannon. - Jachdwalt is your tankiest character who also hits very hard. His strength are in his counterattack stances. He also has a ZOC that traps enemies. If you use him properly, he can wipe a lot of enemy units. Keep him healed and he can counterattack enemies left and right til they fall. His weakness is his low movement and moderate speed. Last thing I want to say about the combat is that the attacks have very good visual effects and sound effects. All attacks that look like they hit hard do indeed look and sound like they hit very hard. Attacks that look like they don't are also reflected in the visuals and SFX. A++ on the sound design. Speaking of sound design, being a visual novel, the game has to have great music, and indeed it does. All of the music for every type of mood and situation in the game is appropriate for every scene. Words cannot describe how insanely good the music in this game is. Aside from that, the voice acting is also top notch! I don't want to talk too much about the story for fear of spoiling it. But I have to say that it is the story that made me fall in love with the Utawarerumono series. The characters, their personalities, and their relationships to one another. By far, my favorite thing about the story is watching Haku grow. He starts off weak and lazy but really turns into a leader that is trusted by his comrades. Man, there's just so many good things about this game. I can't recommend it enough!
