TL;DR: Nice, short sidescroller/bullet-hell/platform game. Good for a sale. Nice to finish on a weekend. --- Finished the campaign in 5 hours, but it has extra challenges/levels, and a Hardcore mode. I'm not planning to continue playing, I had a good time, but I consider this game finished, on my end. All in all, pretty nice short game. Story The story is campy, doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's... meh. Doesn't do anything for me, but I appreciate it's there. Mechanics The movement and shooting mechanics are good, basic but flexible, and pretty fun to play with. The enemies are interesting and vary enough for the campaign's playground. Art/Graphics/Music The art/graphics do the job. Clear enough to understand what's going on, simple enough to respect the laidback style of the campaign and the game in general. The music sounds really, really good. I'm not sure if it fits the tone of the game though, it's more orchestral and serious sounding. But damm, I'm gonna look up the music artist, to see if they made something else to enjoy.

RIVE is the kind of game that reminds you why “old-school” doesn’t have to mean “outdated.” Developed by the now-retired Dutch studio Two Tribes, it’s a ferocious, metal-plated side scrolling shooter that blends bullet-hell chaos with slick platforming and a knowing sense of humor. From the moment you boot it up, RIVE makes one thing clear: it’s here to kick your ass and have fun doing it. You control a grizzled pilot trapped inside a starship full of murderous robots, using twin-stick controls to blast your way through tightly designed stages that demand constant focus and precision. The movement feels wonderfully fluid, the shooting tight and responsive. Enemies come from every direction, explosions fill the screen and the game never apologizes for its difficulty; instead, it celebrates it. Each encounter feels like a skill check wrapped in spectacular, neon-coated destruction. What really sells RIVE, though, is its tone. The writing is full of self-aware quips that poke fun at gaming clichés while still delivering genuine charm. The hero’s sarcastic commentary and the snarky AI that accompanies him keep the intensity balanced with humor, making death after death surprisingly bearable. The soundtrack, too, deserves mention: a pounding electronic score that keeps your pulse racing. That said, RIVE isn’t for everyone. It’s brutally hard, occasionally frustrating, and short enough that some may feel it ends just as you fully adapt to its rhythm. But within its few hours lies a perfect storm of design: pure arcade precision meeting modern craftsmanship. It's explosive, challenging and refreshingly honest in its design. RIVE is a farewell letter to an era of games that demanded mastery, and proof that Two Tribes went out in a blaze of glory.
