You thinking about buying Road 96? Wondering what to expect? Let me explain. Road 96 is a game where you play as random teenagers fleeing an authoritarian state. The goal, as the player, is to get to Road 96. It is a road at the very north of the map, an infamous and dangerous road, but also the way to freedom from Petria and the rule of President Tyrak. This game is fairly political. It explores themes of freedom, democracy, the importance of voting, political violence, media and politics and the police state. It also looks at the oppression of specific groups, such as teenagers, which act as a stand in for other related issues. It does not explore these themes deeply, there isn’t too much nuance and the messaging isn’t exactly subtle. President Tyrak is very clearly an analogy for Tyrant. He is clearly marked as one of the primary antagonists of the player. As an indie game, it is a really well made production. Sound design is pretty good, the music is good to listen to and the voice acting is rather talented but the dialogue can be cheesy. Speaking of dialogue, the recurring characters in this game range from goofy criminals, a media personality, a police officer, a dangerous killer, dubiously employed truck driver as well as some other characters. Each character offers entertaining and scary interactions with the player and they all do well in driving the plot forward. Speaking of the story. Each episode represents 1 teenagers story in crossing the border. Do it 6 times successfully, and you’ll reach the end game. You meet characters each episode and progress their plotline. The art style is really great and gives the game a cozy vibe. I also found it really easy to get 100% achievements within a single run. You might need a guide to get the less obvious stuff. Is the game difficult? Honestly it's not particularly hard at all. Don’t expect a challenge as long as you think about it a little bit. Should you get it? While this is a political/social look on a very specific country, it’s no Disco Elysium. Don’t expect a deep intellectual social and political commentary. For players looking for a straight forward serious story driven game, you won’t find it here. The game is defined by a blend of being a bit goofy but also serious. If you want a story game with light humour, goofy and entertaining characters but also serious, tense and sad moments and a plot driven by messages of political activism, this is the game for you.

About 30 minutes into Road 96, I paused and thought, what am I even playing? The controls and movement felt awkward, and I couldn’t quite make sense of what was happening. I was close to dropping it altogether. But I decided to give it another chance and started fresh. I’m glad I did. Before long, I had guided three teenagers across the border, and as their stories unfolded, the world and themes of Road 96 started to click. I found myself hooked. The game’s distinctive art style paints a bleak yet captivating world, and the narrative is carried forward by the many intriguing side characters you meet along the way. Choices feel meaningful, and during my playthrough, I was faced with the ultimate decision, a moment that stuck with me. In the end, I’m happy I stuck with it. Over roughly 10 hours, I experienced a striking world brought to life with gorgeous art and compelling characters. And of course, don’t forget to donate to the Stan and Mitch fund. β€œSTAN AND MITCH AND THE KIIIIIIIIIID!”

A truly insightful and inspiring game. I wish I could forget it and start over from scratch. It covers three months of the summer of 1996 in a made-up authoritarian regime that has grown stronger after the radical opposition was accused of a terrorist attack. Now it's a broken society headed by an irreplaceable president, and the next election is approaching in a tense atmosphere. Out of habit, fear, and repression, the current president is expected to win. Yet a minority still holds out hope for the protest candidate, while some are preparing to rally against the government, and the most radical ones are making bombs. During that melting summer, teenagers are fleeing the country, preferring to try their luck on Road 96, illegally crossing the closed border, rather than grow up in such hopeless surroundings. You don't know their reasons, but can only try to help them survive along the way, switching to a new ward after the previous one has succeeded... or failed in any way. In this desperate road movie, you're destined to meet new people, make decisions you'll regret, unravel the intertwined stories of core characters, and ultimately confront a future for the state forged by your choices. Most of the road events are random, so each playthrough will be different. Oh, one more thing... there is a KILLER on the road. At the same time, it's not too serious. You're free to enjoy road trips, wonderful music, humorous scenes with interesting characters, and some light arcade-style encounters β€” no need to overthink it if you don't want to. Just savor the summer vibes, or go further, if that's your intention. Because there are also a bunch of serious questions posed: Is every social action political, like the quote "everything is political" from another game suggests? What is the value of one’s life compared to the "greater good"? And you can dig deeper and deeper. It’s not the ending that matters; the whole thing feels more like a meditative observation of your own reflections along the path.

Niche and treasure indie game. When the road trip began, I hadn't the slightest idea what to expect. Operating different characters along the way you meet all sorts of people, friendly, excited, quirky, heart warming and even annoying. These trips are all great, but unfortunately not all of them end well. In my opinion, this game is worth playing and I highly recommend it! 10/10
