Imagine a typical JRPG. The brave hero of destiny has to explore the world to find the 8 magical macguffins to keep the Big Bad from breaking the seal that binds him. The world gives the player hints and tidbits leading them to the different items or dumps them in an area with a town and a couple of dungeons and doesn’t let them leave, forcing them to find some story thread that leads them to the next part of the adventure. All the while the big bad’s plan is paused by some unknown cause that is resolved exactly when the player makes a specific amount of progress. It is a patient world that leaves you breadcrumbs to makes sure you experience the storyline and world in it’s fullest. Romancing SaGa is an experiment in what would happen if they didn’t do that. What if we leave the player in a world without any guidance? What if they aren’t chosen by the gods but just some shlub? What if they don’t discover the Oblivion gate and Martin is killed? What if they discover one or two Macguffins but not the other 6 because they never knew they were out there? What if time moves with every single enemy encounter and they come back to a town to finish a quest only to discover the town is wiped from the map and they have no idea why? What if a party member important to a quest you’re on dies halfway through? It’s a game that doesn’t care what you do or don’t figure out, it just leaves you in an open playground for you to explore, and not at your leisure. Don’t go in expecting it to be a one and done. You are expected to play through the game multiple times putting the pieces together based on the consequences of your actions on previous attempts. This is a game originally released in 1992 when you bought a game and played through it over and over because you didn’t have decades of backlogged games to finish. Like any game in the SaGa series it demands you meet the game at its level. It’s not for everyone, it’s extremely niche, but if you’re the right type of person and know what you’re getting into, there’s few other games you’ll enjoy more! And if you aren’t, there’s always Romancing SaGa 2&3 that are much more user friendly!

Today, after starting a new save this weekend, I finally beat Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song. I bought it in 2023 for the Switch, got to the final boss, couldn't beat him, and gave up. But today I did it. I really think I'll remember it as one of my favorite games, and yet I don't think I could recommend it to anyone unless I know for a fact they'd be comfortable with what is effectively a 20+ hour puzzle box. Because that's what this game was. You get to pick between 8 characters with virtually no idea who any of them are, "tutorials" are walls of text that randomly pop up only after you encounter the new mechanic (or presented by these little twerps that call you a rookie in every town no matter how late in the game you are), the game literally tells you to keep multiple saves in case you mess up (because you can mess up BAD), the whole game has a "time" limit, there is no main quest until the very end of the game so you're flying by the seat of your pants and holding on by the skin of your teeth trying to figure out what the heck is going on, and that final boss was a bastard. It's a game where the main character is a plaything of the gods strung along by fate and the whims of you the player (I'm not being philosophical on that one. The game asks you your real name and sex for story reasons). But God knows it felt good to finally beat it. It's a gorgeous game, serene even. Yet it's still comfortable punching you in the gut and telling you that you failed so badly that you should probably start a new save. There's even a section in your quest log for failed quests. Even then, I only beat the game as one of the 8 playable characters. Minstrel Song is completely comfortable being itself and the main mind behind the franchise doesn't beat around the bush when he talks about his games in interviews. The whole SaGa franchise is like this. These games are weird and you may love one game in the franchise only to hate the next. But if this is your thing, you're not going to get the SaGa experience from any other gaming franchise. For what it's worth, I hope you reading this love this game the way I did.

A SaGa game through and through, this game will either cause you to tear your hair out or wail in ecstasy (likely both). +Open ended nature allows for a lot of variance +Phenomenal music +Boss fights are always thrilling +Strong sense of place in locations +Brutal difficulty is oddly fair in being accommodating toward most party builds -Camera works against you more often than not -Rough voice acting -Enemy density and speed is exhausting, often being clustered and impossible to outrun, which leads into... -Event rank being tied to battles is a huge pain in the ass, especially when its near impossible to avoid much of what comes at you Other entries are (slightly) more friendly toward those new to the series, and two hours isn't necessarily a good indicator of what the game has to offer if you're looking to see within the refund window. Those with patience and a curiosity for some of the weirder stuff on the JRPG spectrum will be pleased with what they find here.

I never left a review, but I felt I had to with Minstrel Song. I've been playing the game since it was released for PS2 and I still play to this day. So why do I think this game so interesting? (1) Complete freedom to play how you want. You don't need to do any quests (and you won't without a guide and that’s totally fine) (2) Every battle you have the opportunity to spark a weapon technique and most of them are quite useful (3) You don't need to heal after each battle, giving a much better flow than other jrpgs of its time (4) The enemies scale with you keeping a healthy dose of challenge throughout the game (5) Insane replayability. Many classes, characters and techniques to try

I bought this game because I have never heard any of my peers talk about it nor have I ever experienced a SaGa game. It's an SquareEnix game and I've only heard the OST from the different entries. My experience with this game is with literally 0 information, no guides, just kind of trial and errorring it. As someone that has been playing JRPGs for some time, I tried to approach this game the same way. However, I ended up in a bad spot and restarted my gameplay and a lot of the stuff had changed and then it clicked that I needed to play this game akin to how I play a roguelite. Then things started to click and I started to really enjoy this weird and strange type of game. I'm not gonna hold you and say the game is easier playing it this way, the game gets very difficult, especially if you grind. Apparently grinding is not good, but I do it anyways, because I like all the shiny skills I've been getting. Just have fun with this game and play it your way. It's a very fun game, I have had a lot of laughs and I've cussed out many a boss. It's intriguing because exploration and wonder is rewarded, and you won't do everything the first time you play. Sometimes it's okay to backtrack, because even older dungeons will have monsters that scale to your teams progress. I started with Barbara and the game has been such a time getting to know. I recommend it, because it's not the typical JRPG formula, it's really intriguing and rewards experimentation and also a lot of luck as so many factors are RNG dependent, which for some reason is something I really like in games. If you're more akin to traditional systems, I think I could see people finding the experience frustrating there's no surefire way of dealing with situations, so I can understand how people would say that not leveling is the best way, because everything is randomized: How you learn skills, how you increase stats, what items you find, how much gold you find, etc. And sometimes you just have to do other things until you learn something good, like finally getting a skill that does a lot of damage to undead monsters or being able to summon elementals. Throw the dice, play the game!
