It is unfortunate to see something as unique as Ayesha went somewhat off the radar by JRPG fans. It's certainly one of my top 3 Atelier games of all time and it's one of the best JRPGs I've ever played too. Everything about this game seems to have been made with passion from the team; from its music, stories and characters all the way up to gameplay. Most other Atelier games have very shallow plots and storylines but they actually managed to come up with something compelling in Ayesha. The plot is melancholic and deep but at the same time, the whimsical characters lighten the mood a little bit, and all this makes up for a perfect blend of engaging and impactful storytelling. All the characters are pretty well-written too and you don't usually get to see this in most modern Atelier games because only in Ayesha where every character gets the spotlight, unlike in other Atelier games where the main focus is put on the protagonist of each game. Ayesha's synthesis can either be quite simple or complex, depending on how much you're willing to explore the synthesis system. Of course, you'll be rewarded with better items if you go the extra mile with the synthesis mechanic. I think that this is a good thing because it lowers the barrier of entry for people who are not familiar with Atelier synthesis but it also gives the option for more advanced players to craft the most broken items they can think of. Resource and time management are also something that make this game unique. I haven't played Arland myself but I can tell that Ayesha definitely benefits from the time limit because you're forced to use materials and money sparingly and you'll have to decide in what order to complete the checklists in your notebook. These constraints somewhat tie in very well with the story, too. You'll get what I mean when you play it. Despite the presence of time limit, I think you shouldn't be too concerned with it if you've never played an Atelier game and even more so if you've played them before because the amount of time provided to you is very generous and the game is not really that hard to begin with, so as long as you do all the objectives in the notebook you should be able to reach the main objective before the time limit. Even if you couldn't, the game doesn't really have a bad ending, so you can rest assured knowing that you won't be locked to a bad ending for your bad decisions. For me, I think that Atelier Ayesha is the single most flawless Atelier experience to date. It might not be my favourite Atelier game but everything works so well in this game. The synthesis, story, characters, settings and combat are so meticulously crafted and consistent throughout the game that it's hard to point out the flaws. I think everyone and their dog should try and play this game. Don't let the presence of time limit discourage you from trying it because it is IMO among the best starting points in the franchise.

I'm placing this review down pretty late, but relized I never made one and wanted to. This was my first Atelier game I ever played, and a great introduction to the series for me. I absolutly loved it. The characters and writing are all fantastic. The whole game feels like a really well made slice of life story in a fantasy setting, with some occasional serious stakes and personal goal seeking around the main plot and a couple character side storys. The ost is also all around fantastic. Occasional art cg's are also very well made. I personaly found the protagonist very likable as well. She was an adorable gem, and I had a lot of fun watching her interactions with other characters and how she managed through her own personal journey. The game is fairly easy overall, but there are some late game difficulty spikes that really require you to properly learn the alchemy system to make progress. Don't be afraid to look up some advice on how mechanics work on that if you need to. There is also a time limit mechanic, but I personaly did not find it a problem at all. I was able to get praticaly every side story and ending requirment done by the end of a single run, with time to spare, and that's with me being late to make certain items that would have reduced my travel time even more. Don't let the time limit stress you out too much. The game is a but older and seems to have issues for some people. One I had, that's apperently common is having an issue where playing in fullscreen causes a visual bug that blacks out everything eventually. This is avoidable by playing in windowed but controlling the resolution of the screen to a size that's actually decent and not too small is more complicated than other games. My advice is to just google it or search the steam forums. Other players have already listed easy fixes for this that involve some simple value changes in the game data. It was not very problamatic for me in the end.

It's a pretty good Atelier game, and this DX edition is just great. My only complaint about this entry is that it feels like the alchemy system takes a bit of a long while to really open up, I wish you'd get property passing a lot earlier.

I've been torn about trying the mainline Atelier series. I've played some of the spin-off games before, but the mainline games have always had me wavering from a distance and not pulling the trigger on investing into one. On the one hand, I really like the idea of an alchemy RPG, I am always here for dense and overcomplicated crafting systems in games. On the other hand, I just feel so strongly that these games are made and marketed for a specific kind of person and I am definitely not that person. And my experience now having played one for 40+ hours is that that impression I had was mostly correct. I went through this game pretty much without any attachment to the characters, the setting, the dialogue, the plot, pretty much everything. It was all pretty dumb and in the postgame I decided to just sleep through months of time to get to the ending rather than do a bunch of quests for characters I didn't care about. I was drawn to this entry because of the dying earth setting and the supposedly higher stakes story, and that was probably a mistake because the saccharine tone and the hollow slice-of-life episodes where a bunch of women written by men who have never spoken to a woman repeatedly have boring conversations about sweets would at least not be so jarring if they weren't in a world that is currently falling apart under some form of magic climate crisis. But you know what? The other half of my impressions was right too. In terms of gameplay, I really enjoyed the loop of crafting and exploring, figuring out the fine points of both, and even the management aspects of the game. I decided to play on hard difficulty hoping for some challenge. The combat proved not up to snuff in that regard until the endgame, but in the middle of the game I felt genuinely pressured by the deadline and the money pressures that dictated whether or not I could afford bombs to fight with. I still managed to kill the final boss with a year to spare, but I was surprised the game could create that feeling of friction with its systems when it shied so far away with it with its story. I feel the combat system is sort of sloppy and they could have refined into something much more, it has some good ideas. The synthesizing though is very absorbing and seeing your weird creations come to life is rewarding. I love the bomb that keeps dropping garbage on your enemies, I attached a quality to it that debuffs every stat and seeing those debuffs popups as I wasted the endgame bosses was great. So my final impression is that both this game and probably this series is okay. I'm not racing out to try the next one, but I'm also not sworn against the series forever. A chill and light RPG experience. It was fun.
