ScourgeBringer A brutally difficult yet rewarding rogue lite, with minor flaws This game has captured my attention in a way that I never would've expected, and I started loving the game the more I played it. But as great as ScourgeBringer is: it isn't perfect What I love Each realm has clear themes and gorgeous pixel art that give every location a very unique look and feel, especially when paired with the music of each location. Speaking of music, the game has unique tracks that play for when you're in combat, out of combat, or fighting a boss. All of those tracks change as you move through the various realms to fit their theme. The music mainly consists of metal, with some other sounds/genres mixed in, which I think is awesome. But if it's not your thing, you can always mute it and play your own music The game's realms escalate in terms of hazards and different environmental changes. It gives each location a new gameplay gimmick that pairs well with the abilities of enemies that inhabit the realm. Each location also has small decorations like grass or vines that move when the player brushes past them or when enemies slam against the wall, shaking them all at once. These tiny details really add a ton of character and subtle interactability to the game ScourgeBringer has never felt like an unfair game to me. It's brutal in its difficulty, yet the game makes sure to give you the tools to overcome it. There are always strategies you can organically learn for enemies or bosses when repeatedly facing them. It feels like the devs put a lot of thought into how the player interacts with the enemies and vice versa. Once you learn those enemy patterns and master your moveset, the game feels very satisfying as you fly from one enemy to the next! However, if the game remains too difficult, you can always turn down the bullet speed, game speed, increase health drops, or even turn on invincibility. The game has a ton of great accessibility features so that everyone can enjoy playing Some critiques The game has a permanent currency you earn during every run called Judge Blood. It allows you to purchase new abilities, more health, and upgrades that are persistent through every future run. However, after a few hours, you'll earn enough Judge Blood to max out the available tree of upgrades, and Judge Blood very quickly becomes irrelevant, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. On the one hand, it allows the player to grasp the mechanics of the game before allowing them to upgrade existing abilities and acquire new ones. But on the other hand, beyond that, it doesn't have much use outside of 3 minor late game upgrades and 1 secret use that's completely optional The game's enemies have clear patterns that can be learned and countered. They're tough but fair and feel incredibly rewarding when the flow of combat clicks. What I feel lacks in this area is the ability to practice against certain bosses/enemies, because once you reach a new area, you will have no idea what they do or how to deal with them. Oftentimes, you'll have to die repeatedly as you slowly learn the attacks of new enemies, which can be frustrating especially if you make it really far on a good run, beat a difficult boss, and immediately get cut down by new enemies you've never encountered before in the next realm. And if you die, you'll have to make your way back through the realms just to get another chance at facing them again. One easy solution to this would be to give the game's bestiary more functionality: if a player dies to or kills an enemy, they could unlock its entry in the bestiary and can fight it in a practice arena. That would soften the blow of repeatedly dying to new enemies and turn that death into new information for the player so they can go back to that realm with the knowledge they need to triumph Closing thoughts I don't want you to come away from this review seeing all of the critiques I've levied at this game and think I hate it. On the contrary: at the time of writing this, it has the highest amount of time I've ever spent on a Steam game with just over 100 hours, and I've spent that time earning every achievement in the game without touching ScourgeBringer's accessibility features. It's been a rewarding challenge, and in my eyes: it shows just how much fun ScourgeBringer really is! It's tough yet fair and an absolute blast!

very fast-paced, and quite hard. imagine having so much mobility that you dont even need to touch the ground but inside a box-layered room. thats how i would describe most of the gameplay of ScourgeBringer in a nutshell. As a roguelike(or lite in this case) there really isn't a lot of variety on your runs, the blood altars don't really feel impactful enough, and your playstyle stays mostly the same across your run. But blimey, i would be lying if its not a fun one! overall, quite good, if you like metal you will like the OST of this game. i give this game a 7.5/10 as the core gameplay of your character is REALLY good, but lacks a bit of sauce.

It's a recommend but with a forewarning; to me it's more of a "mixed" game than a "good" game... whatever that is. The art style is beautiful, story is minimalistic but interesting, and the levels are good, but the gameplay... the issue lies with the way the game is balanced, it has a lot of problems when it comes to the pacing, the way dodging and parrying works, and the type of philosophy design behind the encounters; this is one of those games were you feel like you have to cheese the game in order to win, rather than grind or get good at it. For example, you can eventually get an upgrade that lets you parry bullets and "reflect" them back into the enemy, pretty cool right? But here's the thing, you have to time the parries so you reflect a string of bullets, if you don't time it right, you can reflect two of the three bullets and still get hit by the last one. The game also has issues when it comes to pickups and overall upgrades, each of the upgrades you get in your runs feel a tad bit inconsequential... because they are, it's stuff like: reduce the cost of shop prices the lower your HP is, but then you get to the store with two out of three HP and five of the options on offer are HP and a gun... The game has accessibility options and upgrades, but the accessibility settings don't change much -unless you enable invulnerability mode straight out-, and for the most part they seem more like a menu to tailor de balance of the game, rather than a menu to tailor YOUR individual experience. Like the game has an option to increase the HP pickups, but if you don't enable this option, you literally don't get HP pickups in a lot of the stages! Like at all, YOU DON'T GET THEM. But here's the thing, if you enable this option, you get them rarely, like freaking each two rooms out of the ten in each stage; and these health pickups usually give you one hp out of 13 or something ridiculous like that. I like challenge in games, as long as the challenge is well implemented and I can jive with it, but here it feels as if the dev attempted to make the game frustrating and obnoxious just to make it challenging for the sake of being challenging. Just because a game is challenging doesn't mean is fun or engaging, a lot of it is HOW is that challenge handled; is it well implemented? Does it function in tandem with the game's mechanics? The problem with this title is that it relies too much on the challenge to create an engaging experience, but it fails in actually developing that glue to hold the entirety of the experience together; you feel as if your losses have more to do with the messy design, rather than with your actual ability to play the game. As an end result, you end up enabling the accessibility settings, because who really wants to play the first stage of the game 30 times or so? Is good, but be prepared to tweak those accessibility settings, or to bang your head against a wall for a couple of dozens of hours in what is an otherwise short game.

As amazing as the first few hours were, it got repetitive FAST. Good game for a little while, might be nice to pick up on sale. The game is fast paced and awesome, the music and visuals are also really good, and the movement is snappy and satisfying... most of the time. The dash tracking-to-enemy can get a little annoying. Solid 7.5/10
