Such an amazing movement system, you'll rarely see anything like this anywhere else. I’ll say right away, i wouldn’t recommend this game to absolutely everyone, actually I would recommend everyone to try it, but only because within the first hour you’ll easily understand whether it’s for you or not. The game is hard from the very first seconds, and over time it only gets even harder and I mean MUCH harder. And even though I praised the movement, it’s tough to adjust to it after other games. So in the end i highly recommend this game just be ready to rage and a lot 8/10

Scourge Bringer is a peak game with the best realization of active slasher gameplay in roguelikes I have ever seen. Combat: As combat tools, the player has: a single slash, dash, super hit, super dash, gun, and special ability. All those things work pretty well, and when combined, they give you a huge number of options in a fight. Each combat tool has its own specific tweaks, like the slash can be used to stay in the air, the dash can be grounded and deal nice damage with that, and it also gives freeze frames. But there’s a con: the developer used static hazards, which sometimes force you to dash or move into them and get hit when you were about to deal damage to enemies. This has happened many times. Roguelike: There are pretty simple roguelike elements, like slight meta-progression (unlocking everything takes ~7-10 hours), mutations, and world generation-all those things are okay. The challenge mode and other stuff also give cool replayability to this project. Graphics, music and lore: The pixel art style is just okay, the music is epic in fights and chill when not, the lore is okay - here i can’t say more. Everything fits the gameplay. Overall, it’s a peak slasher game, with peak movement and combat.

Scourgebringer is a very difficult game. This is a statement that should turn away many, and invite many others to try the game out. I invite the latter to read ahead, but to the former: this is a good game, but it is most likely not for you, as the overall experience will feel deeply unrewarding if you do not find the challenge of difficulty itself reward enough. So, this game is a roguelike, and as the genre implies this means any progress you make across areas is over once you die. Many games of this genre will give you something to keep along the way, and in a manner scourgebringer does too, as points for the skill tree, but this does not feel enough of a reward between runs. This is not necessarily a bad thing or something that the game isn't doing correctly. Scourgebringer doesn't pull its punches, and it invites you to get better at the game rather than make the game significantly easier for you with upgrades and permanent equipment. Yes, skill tree upgrades will help, but only slighty so, and if you can't keep up with the pace of the game, which is pretty quick, you will eventually grow somewhat tired of redoing the same areas over and over. That being said, it also offers some pretty fun enemies and bosses, and never did the game feel unfair or unfun, just brutally difficult. Very few games have made me feel as satisfied as this one upon beating a boss, because it really only comes down to skill and not the build you end up having for this run or the upgrades you get from the skill tree, so it's fully YOUR success. I also noticed that the music never became grating, as it often happens on games where you have to repeat an area a lot. Quite the opposite in fact, this game has some real banger music that has the effect that the doom soundtrack may have on a bad day, it really helps you de-stress and makes you less angry for repeatedly dying. The environments are also very beautifully designed and diverse, and the overall aesthetic sometimes gave me an old metroid vibe, especially with some of the enemies. Now, I have not finished the game, and I don't know if I ever will, but I do really recommend it if you're the type who loves a challenge just for the sake of the journey. This game will feel really rewarding to conquer. To everyone else, yeah this is probably not a game for you.

ScourgeBringer A brutally difficult yet rewarding rogue lite, with minor flaws This game has captured my attention in a way that I never would've expected, and I started loving the game the more I played it. But as great as ScourgeBringer is: it isn't perfect What I love Each realm has clear themes and gorgeous pixel art that give every location a very unique look and feel, especially when paired with the music of each location. Speaking of music, the game has unique tracks that play for when you're in combat, out of combat, or fighting a boss. All of those tracks change as you move through the various realms to fit their theme. The music mainly consists of metal, with some other sounds/genres mixed in, which I think is awesome. But if it's not your thing, you can always mute it and play your own music The game's realms escalate in terms of hazards and different environmental changes. It gives each location a new gameplay gimmick that pairs well with the abilities of enemies that inhabit the realm. Each location also has small decorations like grass or vines that move when the player brushes past them or when enemies slam against the wall, shaking them all at once. These tiny details really add a ton of character and subtle interactability to the game ScourgeBringer has never felt like an unfair game to me. It's brutal in its difficulty, yet the game makes sure to give you the tools to overcome it. There are always strategies you can organically learn for enemies or bosses when repeatedly facing them. It feels like the devs put a lot of thought into how the player interacts with the enemies and vice versa. Once you learn those enemy patterns and master your moveset, the game feels very satisfying as you fly from one enemy to the next! However, if the game remains too difficult, you can always turn down the bullet speed, game speed, increase health drops, or even turn on invincibility. The game has a ton of great accessibility features so that everyone can enjoy playing Some critiques The game has a permanent currency you earn during every run called Judge Blood. It allows you to purchase new abilities, more health, and upgrades that are persistent through every future run. However, after a few hours, you'll earn enough Judge Blood to max out the available tree of upgrades, and Judge Blood very quickly becomes irrelevant, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. On the one hand, it allows the player to grasp the mechanics of the game before allowing them to upgrade existing abilities and acquire new ones. But on the other hand, beyond that, it doesn't have much use outside of 3 minor late game upgrades and 1 secret use that's completely optional The game's enemies have clear patterns that can be learned and countered. They're tough but fair and feel incredibly rewarding when the flow of combat clicks. What I feel lacks in this area is the ability to practice against certain bosses/enemies, because once you reach a new area, you will have no idea what they do or how to deal with them. Oftentimes, you'll have to die repeatedly as you slowly learn the attacks of new enemies, which can be frustrating especially if you make it really far on a good run, beat a difficult boss, and immediately get cut down by new enemies you've never encountered before in the next realm. And if you die, you'll have to make your way back through the realms just to get another chance at facing them again. One easy solution to this would be to give the game's bestiary more functionality: if a player dies to or kills an enemy, they could unlock its entry in the bestiary and can fight it in a practice arena. That would soften the blow of repeatedly dying to new enemies and turn that death into new information for the player so they can go back to that realm with the knowledge they need to triumph Closing thoughts I don't want you to come away from this review seeing all of the critiques I've levied at this game and think I hate it. On the contrary: at the time of writing this, it has the highest amount of time I've ever spent on a Steam game with just over 100 hours, and I've spent that time earning every achievement in the game without touching ScourgeBringer's accessibility features. It's been a rewarding challenge, and in my eyes: it shows just how much fun ScourgeBringer really is! It's tough yet fair and an absolute blast!
