I've enjoyed playing this game quite a bit. It can feel daunting at first if you haven't programmed before but it's helped me a lot. I would recommend reading through the API and documentation because it provides a lot of useful starter code for your bot. The screeps community discord is very active where you can chat, ask for help, or get updates on conflicts around the map. It's an RTS game where you claim areas on the map and you gather resources, trade with others, fight or form alliances, or just keep to yourself and develop at your own pace. The catch though is that you have to write code for every unit, structure, or resource in the game so that they can function and interact with each other and everything persists while you're offline. Your rooms can get destroyed but the main enjoyment is watching your code base grow and prosper into a more advanced empire over time. Every new update you create for your empire is exciting Since the game requires you to write code, it takes time to have a decent empire but if you're someone who wants to sit down and solve challenges and become a better programmer or just learn to code, this game is fantastic. The main screeps world version of the game is all you need to play. You can join shard 3 (kind of known as the beginner shard) where you won't be at any disadvantage because the CPU is maxed at 20. If you decide to venture past shard 3, you will probably want the lifetime CPU unlock so you don't reach your CPU limit which causes your units to not act during that tick until your CPU regenerates back. Although some players have 30+ rooms with just 20 CPU, I can only manage about 5 before running into issues but you won't have to worry about that problem anyways when you first start out. Screeps Arena is separate from the MMO. Think of it as quick matchmaking where your bot competes against another player. And then seasons are where players spawn in and compete against each other based on the season's objectives. Each one lasts about 2 months and may have about 40-50 players depending on how many people decide to participate. You can buy season tickets with in-game currency or you can buy them with real money. Your bot can also technically make you real money by generating pixels (an in-game currency) and using them to create decorations and then selling those decorations on steam. Each decoration may be a couple cents to a couple dollars depending on how rare it is. Overall it's a really cool and unique game It's a perfect game to play and come back to after a few months on and off. If your economy is really strong, you can get a room to max level in a few days.

Screeps – A game that rewards thinking, not grinding Screeps is not a traditional game, and that is exactly its strength. There is no story to follow, no levels to rush through, and no “win screen” waiting at the end. Instead, Screeps offers a persistent world where your code is the player, and your job is to design systems that survive, adapt, and improve over time. What makes Screeps special is that it doesn’t test your reflexes or your ability to memorize mechanics. It tests your ability to think in systems: How do you keep something running when parts fail? How do you prioritize under limited resources? How do you avoid complexity turning into chaos? The game is brutally honest. If your logic is fragile, your colony collapses. If your assumptions are wrong, time will expose them. This makes Screeps deeply educational, but not in a “tutorial” way. You don’t learn programming because the game explains it to you. You learn because the world reacts to your decisions continuously, even when you are offline. It’s also worth noting what Screeps is not: It’s not casual. It’s not fast gratification. It’s not about constant competition unless you choose it to be. If you enjoy reflection, long-term thinking, automation, and building something that can run calmly without constant intervention, Screeps is incredibly rewarding. If you want instant action or hand-holding, it probably isn’t. Screeps feels less like a game you “play” and more like a laboratory for autonomy, resilience, and system design. That’s rare. And that’s why it deserves to be played. Long life Screeps

If you like programming and if you like problem solving with a RTS-like system. This is a perfect game for that. Even if you don't like Javascript there are many toolings that allow using basically anything that can compile to WASM. From Rust to C# to C++ everything can be used even if the underlying game is running JS and Node You basically try to write code so you have to play the game as little as possible. But problems always arise from your code breaking to needing to expand or dying to invader or other players. You are never done Optimizing and expanding your code. A little tip for new player: Start on Shard3 world and don't use Open source projects as your starting point. try to learn it on your own and only look at them at them to get ideas on how to handle things never copy
