I half expected to be getting a refund after seeing the negative reviews, but for me it's a really fun game and the motion controls on pico 4 are all working correctly, it would be nice if the devs came back to it and polished it up a bit, because it definitely could do with a bit... AA doesn't seem to work in this game for some reason and performance can be a bit hit or miss occasionally but not bad enough to stop me playing, with a bit of spit and polish it would be one of my favourites for sure, it still looks good too, better than a lot of the new stuff.
After spending a little time to figure out a few things which are not so readily apparent in this game, I have had a very enjoyable VR experience on an alien planet. The environments are beautifully crafted, the levels semi-guide you through, but there are many bonus areas and resources to discover, so you are rewarded for your time to fully explore each level. You do build up a base area and can craft many upgrades, but you will have to defend it as well, so spending some time to farm materials is advisable and makes sense. I prefer the walking movement with snap turns on 45o, and you can wave your hands like running to run, which not only works but is novel. There are some puzzles to figure out (or die on) which I enjoyed as a break to be nearly eaten much of the time. Between being food for numerous alien beasts, you have an enemy element shooting at you as well which makes for a great mix of enemies. There are also many docile animals and creatures which are not interested in you, and this helps make the environments feel legit. The decisions you make in the game will also have an impact on your experience; the way you gear, hunt, and tactics you use along with the layout for your base crafting machines and defense turrets will all play a part in how well you succeed, or suffer! While some people have given this game a bit of a harsh review, I strongly encourage anyone who wants to immerse themselves in an alien world, to learn the saga of what transpired there, to give this game a shot. If you are after a quick shooter experience, this may fall a little flat. There is much more to see and do here, so a casual player looking for an adventure should find this quite enjoyable. For reference, I'm using an i9, 64gb Ram, SSD, RTX2080, Vive Pro, and regular Vive controls and boxes. See you planetside!
Summary: extremely UNFAIR rating ("Mixed"). This is my first and main point about this game. It should be "Overwhelmingly Positive" for sure. This is one of the top VR games I have, from a Collection of 180 VR games. OBS.: Played COMPLETELY on Linux (Arch Linux) PROS: - Innovative locomotion scheme, where you use your stick to move but if you swing your arms, you run. This feels so natural that I'd love if EVERY VR games could adopt this scheme. A thousand times better than pressing the grip or the thumbstick. - Lush, colorful, gorgeous and diverse scenarios and environments. I don't understand the reviews saying the game does not look like the trailers. It does, apart from a few interface effects that might have been in an earlier version of the game. - Good story, great voice acting, convincing reactions, intriguing mysteries on the plot! - A delightful single-player campaign. I'm writing this review after I just completed it, and it took 11h 30 min. - Lots of mining, harvesting organic creatures, crafting and building. Not too much as to encumber or annoy the gameplay, nor too little that it isn't needed to progress. In the end you'll probably have all the materials you need for anything. - Inventory management is sane and well balanced. You have a facility at your base to store stuff you won't need while adventuring. - Great, agile. innovative menu system, that makes it easy and quick to switch weapons, devices, health and other items. This is another thing that I would love to see used in other games. - Great performance, I have witnessed no hiccups, no hangups or something like that. My system is a Ryzen 3700X with 3GHz RAM and AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, my VR set the Valve Index. I can't say the framerate because I do not measure it on VR games (for greater immersion), but I understand it must be at least 90 fps for me to perceive it so smooth. - You have a couple sections in the game where you do essentially a Tower Defense, which is a great way to change the rhythm for a while. These are very fun sections and involve building specialized turrets to help defending the base, using your fixing tool to repair damage, and shooting the hell out of monsters and human enemies which attack your base. - It also has some amount of climbing and walking through ropes, and some puzzles and platforming. - It has awesome, epic boss battles, which I had to try a few times before getting them right. Very balanced: not impossible, but not easy either. This is on normal difficulty. - Has an innovative way of mining and harvesting, where you launch some probe and has to wait for it to finish to get its results. I'm never tired of seeing these animations. - Deceased enemies are solid until they disintegrate, which occurs a short time after they die; this way you can't shoot others through them. - It has coop multiplayer, which I just tested to see it if would work, but never played seriously. From the posts in the discussion group, seem to be quite fun. - It has a good variety of enemies, with both soldiers and animals (including flying ones) and diverse AI and strategies. - It has some elevators which are great to ride. Might look like a minor thing, but the way some of them "catapult" the player through translucid fluids up and down make for a great experience and I practically stopped the game to keep going up and down like a child in the shopping maul -- for about 15 minutes. Weee! CONS: Note that these cons are very minor. It's more like suggestions for the next game. - Does not have vehicles for you to pilot, you're always on foot. - Does not have a tactile interface like Half-Life: Alyx. Sure, there are some objects you can grab or even throw, but your hand passes right through surfaces and you don't dislodge stuff when walking. The amount of interactable objects is small. - The single-player campaign ends abruptly. Well, this is not so much a complaint, it's more like... I was enjoying this game so much, why did it have to end? I feel it has gameplay and mechanics elements that could go on for hundreds of hours, and I would be eager to buy any DLC the developers throw at me. I'm not kidding, this game is a blast to play, I will just stalk the developers to buy anything else they produce...
(I bought this game %80 off) This game has many issues, its generally buggy, unpolished, in many places, and you need very good specs to run it reasonably, but the most glaring issue this game has is a lack of character, the story, plot and scenario is extremely cookie cutter, and some of the enemies, like the ape grunts/soldiers, look absolutely awful and seems like an attempt to recreate the character of halo grunts, but completely fails. it lacks any comedy or charm and just seems to be trying to fit in. The NPC's are nowhere near as smart and dynamic and responsive as they seem in the trailer, most animals will just bolt towards you in a straight line and dont have many move sets, and the humanoid enemies are stale and boring to fight. Some elements are really intuitive and fun, like the resource mining blew me away first time i used it, and the quick grab weapon wheel is fun to use, but don't get me started on trying to eat a damn burger, standing there for 5 seconds shoving a patty into your eyeballs is not a fun game mechanic. Its a shame because some of the fauna and worlds are really really pretty, but it could have been much more with an engaging story or set of characters. pick it up cheap to play with the FPS/VR mechanics, but expect an uninspired unpolished game.
Played on occulus rift S So, the game was on a massive sale, 80%, and it had decent reviews so sure, i'll pick that up. At first i'm not impressed. It plays like a substandard, tanky FPS, but hey, atleast it looks great right? A bit into the game i realise that it's not just a substandard FPS, it's a survival game, crafting, getting materials, all that stuff. That made the game so much better. So yeah, i reccomend it. For what it is, it's fun. And that freaky dog thing in a cave early on? still the scariest thing i've seen in VR.
