Dohnadohna is my first Alicesoft game, most hentai game will have the game part feeling extra, but Alicesoft will remind you it's "mainly" a game and hentai is just the bonus. Its combat doesn't force you to remember all the unit countering like other SRPG, it makes you play, notice a barrier, and then try to figure out the way to break the barrier. Especially when the game doesn't force its win condition only on "defeating all enemies", you can also play defensively and drain enemy's resource to win by reaching the round limit, it prevents player from thinking defensive is just dragging the battle endlessly. World building wise, I have never played any other Rance before so I actually expected it's just Rance somehow travels to anime Sengoku Japan like Sengoku Basara, but it's actually more like Isekai Japan, it tries to mix a lot of things together but they somehow all make sense eventually, Sengoku has a lot of lords and Alicesoft managed to make each of them memorable to the player. Difficulty wise, it feels easy at the start and then all of a sudden enemy is 300% stronger, it's the moment I realized I probably shouldn't be playing as a good guy rance who only attacks whoever is attacking me at the moment. If you know the game basic and doesn't declare war mindlessly this game won't softlock you When I checked online guide when I felt stucked at one point, I'm surprised by how many different ways people have to play this game, I thought it's very linear but somehow everyone walks to a different route in their first playthrough Sengoku Rance ages really well and you will gain a lot pleasure from it, Alicesoft believes in their audience as much as their audience believing in them
Back in college I pirated this. Later when it came on Good Old games I bought it. Now that it is on Steam I bought it again. It didn't have a translation when I originally pirated it. Frankly the game is amazing for its time. I don't care about the sex stuff. I'm too old for that nonsense anyways. But the gameplay, the story and the jokes are great. It even has a new game plus mode that is more fun than the origiinal story and there are mods to allow you to fight outside of japan. I've paid for this game twice now. Hopefully it'll inspire other devs to make games like this .
