A few days ago marked my 28th year of pain and suffering and i wanted to gift myself something stupid. It specifically had to be stupid otherwise it wasn't gonna be worth it. I just wanted to relive a type of experience that is very nostalgic to me: that of playing a really low budget and janky game, possibly from Japan, but not necessarily. That kind of low budget garbo that seems to be on the brink of exctintion nowadays but was so prevalent in the PS2 and PS3 era, the missing link between movie licenced games and a the more competent B-tier titles that may have garnered a following, like No More Heroes for example. Your Shellshocks 2 of the world, your Morph Xs, Your Fractures, your Vampire Rains. God, you remember Vampire Rain? I should write a review on that too. Either way, after skimming through the increasinly worse "related games" section on the pages of Steam stuff i already owned, School Girl/Zombie Hunter was the answer to my prayers. 30 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ euros for a 2018 game plus the most pointless and fragmented DLCs you'll ever see, but my birthday wasn't gonna wait for a sale, so i bit. What's School Girl/Zombie Hunter all about, then? Well, it's a third person shooter set in a big all-women school in which you play the role of cutsie anime girls. The big selling point all over its page was that the clothes get torn off over time if you take enough damage which like... i don't get it. Wouldn't you want to reward the player by showing off more lady skin if they're GOOD at the game? It's realistic, but it's not good game design. Got big Highschool Of The Dead vibes from the premise, down to not showing any actual nudity. There's a shower scene at some point and that's it. I haven't thought about Highschool Of The Dead in so many years... Queen's Blade, that rings a bell for anyone? Man that was the ♥♥♥♥ for teenager me. That, To Love Ru, Highschool DxD... They simply don't make 'em like that no mo. The ecchi side of the game isn't just there for show, as one would expect. Taking off your clothes can also be used as a momentary bait for the zombies, which is the weirdest quirk... sometimes zombies are portrayed as horny for the women who wear those clothes, but the clothes alone? Must be a japanese thing. Showers are a relevant gameplay mechanic, as the game keeps track of how long you're wearing your underwear, and the smellier it is before a shower, the more zombies will cling on to it if you throw it away. Yeah, not making that up. You can say whatever you want about the subjective qualities or shortcomings of School Girl/Zombie Hunter, but if there's one thing you can't take away is this: the game is a masterclass showcase in how you can optimize a low budget, squeezing every last drop of blood out of a very tiny stone. This is most clear in the story itself. Outside of the few zombie types that are colored in all sorts of different ways as to make it less clear there's maybe... 5 of them, the 5 girls and the big villain are the only other character models. There's a girl that talks through an intercom and some other relatives are implied to exist, but none are ever seen in any form. This makes the story super bizarre, because outside of a few comedic moments in secondary missions, the zombie outbreak is taken seriously enough, but we don't ever see anyone outside of the girls actually die or be in danger. Matter of fact, it's not even clear if these ARE zombies and not just weird creatures that happen to look like them, as most of the few boss battles in the game are just zombie recolors of the protagonists that some machine created. Are all zombies artificial? Who's the swagged up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ behind them and what was he trying to do? Entirely unexplained. Thankfully the characterization of the girls isn't as confusing, and while it's the moe cookie cutter drivel anyone familiar with japanese media would expect, the voice actresses did a good job and the idle animations are varied enough given the low budget. Getting back on said low budget tangent, there is a total of 2 maps, one that is fairly large and a smaller one that's used for specific story beats. Both feature a great amount of repeated assets and space things out for the sake of creating the illusion of scope. For a game that's 7 hours at most if you complete all missions that's pitiful, so what did they do? They turn each mission area into a unique massive maze made of wall textures that have no rhyme or reason to be there outside of adding to the variety. And... it kinda works. If this game was described to me by someone else i'd think it was a chore to get through, but it actually really wasn't. I don't know... I liked School Girls/Zombie Hunter in spite of all its wrongdoings. I'm usually not one who cares much about Steam achievements, but looking at the completion rates i was surprised to see how much of a drop-off there is from completing chapter 1 to beating the final boss: around 50% to 10%. School Girl/Zombie Hunter is neither particularly long nor difficult, so i guess people just didn't like it. I get it, but i had a good time for what it was. ♥♥♥♥ how could i forget. The music ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slaps. It's so good, what the hell. So much better than any other aspect of the game, how did that happen? Listen to this ♥♥♥♥ https://youtu.be/ZRnEMMJ66fg

The game is as advertised. A group of school girls fighting off zombies with guns. Don't expect it to be anything other than what it is. Like other Tamsoft games, the gameplay can be fun if you don't take the plot too seriously. Be prepared for infinitely spawning enemies all around you and arbitrary time limits during missions. Headshots are important. Each of the five playable characters are leveled individually with a surprising amount of customization options. I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised with how much game there is. Worth if on sale or in a bundle.

It's not exactly a good game, but it's not really that bad either. It is a low budget fanservice game that doesn't pretend to be anything else. You know what you're getting into with these games, so I expect you'll get over the usual jank. The potential is there for something really cool but it is ultimately held back by Japan not fully understanding how to make a shooter. Even so, I'm still giving it the thumbs up cause I want this game to do well enough that they try again with a bigger budget and lessons learned from the first try.

SG/ZH: School Girl/Zombie Hunter, developed by Tamsoft and published by D3PUBLISHER, is a distinctive blend of third-person shooter and survival horror that combines fast-paced combat with an unusual premise centered around high school girls battling a sudden zombie outbreak. With its colorful, anime-inspired visuals and unapologetically bold tone, the game stands out as a niche title that offers a mix of frantic action, lighthearted fanservice, and survival mechanics. While it caters primarily to fans of quirky, over-the-top Japanese games, it also delivers a surprisingly competent gameplay experience that balances combat intensity with resource management. The story of SG/ZH is straightforward yet intriguing: a group of seemingly ordinary schoolgirls find themselves thrust into a chaotic situation when zombies suddenly invade their city. Forced to rely on their combat skills and ingenuity, these students become reluctant heroes fighting for survival against overwhelming odds. Though the narrative itself isn’t particularly deep, it is peppered with moments of humor, character interactions, and anime-style cutscenes that add personality and help to establish a sense of camaraderie among the cast. The game embraces its playful premise with a self-aware tone that never takes itself too seriously, making the story more of a fun backdrop than a serious drama. Gameplay is the core strength of SG/ZH, combining fast, responsive third-person shooting with melee combat and survival elements such as item collection and crafting. Players control one of several girls, each with unique abilities and weapons, navigating through zombie-infested environments that range from school grounds to urban streets. The combat is intense and requires players to balance aggression with caution, as ammo and resources can be limited, adding a layer of strategy to encounters. The melee system is satisfying, with combos and weapon variety that keep fights dynamic, while ranged weapons provide the necessary firepower to handle larger hordes. Additionally, the inclusion of a stamina system and dodge mechanics adds tactical depth, encouraging players to master timing and positioning. Visually, SG/ZH embraces a bright, anime-style aesthetic, with character designs that emphasize youthful energy and vibrant costumes. The environments are detailed and diverse, featuring a mix of familiar urban settings and eerie, zombie-ravaged locations. While the graphics are not groundbreaking, they suit the game’s tone well, combining lightheartedness with moments of genuine tension. The soundtrack complements the experience with upbeat tracks that contrast with the horror elements, enhancing the game’s quirky and sometimes chaotic atmosphere. Sound effects are suitably punchy, with satisfying weapon sounds and impactful zombie growls that contribute to the immersion. The game also offers several modes, including a story-driven campaign and various challenge modes, which add replay value and opportunities to hone combat skills. Character customization and unlockable outfits provide additional incentives for players who enjoy personalization and progression. Multiplayer functionality, including co-op modes, further extends the game’s appeal, allowing friends to team up and tackle zombie outbreaks together, which amplifies the fun and chaotic nature of the gameplay. However, SG/ZH is not without its shortcomings. Some players may find the pacing uneven, with slower exploration sections occasionally interrupting the otherwise fast-paced action. The story, while entertaining, can feel shallow and repetitive, relying heavily on fanservice and anime tropes, which may alienate those seeking a more serious or nuanced narrative. Technical issues, such as occasional frame rate drops or camera problems, can also detract from the overall experience. Furthermore, the game’s emphasis on style and spectacle sometimes comes at the expense of deeper gameplay complexity, which might leave players wanting more strategic challenge. In conclusion, SG/ZH: School Girl/Zombie Hunter is a bold and quirky action game that merges third-person shooting with survival horror, wrapped in a flashy anime presentation. Its engaging combat mechanics, combined with a fun, if somewhat lighthearted, story and strong replay options, make it an appealing choice for fans of Japanese-style games and those looking for an energetic, offbeat zombie shooter. While it may not resonate with everyone due to its fanservice-heavy approach and occasional technical flaws, it offers a unique and entertaining experience that stands out in the crowded zombie game genre.
