The one that started it all. Rough around the edges, unforgiving, and with a UI that will test your patience - but none of that matters, because back in the date this felt like witchcraft. Commanding armies across feudal Japan with actual real-time battles was unlike anything anyone had seen before. It's clunky, yes. It's hard. And it's completely, unapologetically worth it, if only to pay respects to the game that built an empire. Pure nostalgia, wrapped in honour and steel.
Despite being bare-bones compared to modern entries, this game has the exact same addictive loop that defines the entire series. The design is minimalist featuring far fewer regions, unit types, and tactical options and the mechanics can be quite confusing for the first hour or two. However, the moment everything finally clicks, you are hit with an urge to never put it down. CURIO: During early development, the game wasn't a historical strategy title at all; the team was actually building a dark fantasy game heavily inspired by Games Workshop's Warhammer. When that concept fell through, they repurposed the engine into feudal Japan. This seems to have been fate as they would later gain a license to create Warhammer games years later.
For a guy who spent dozens of hours playing Medieval: Total War in childhood, it's a shame that I had no idea Shogun: Total War even existed. I genuinely thought Medieval was the first game of the franchise until this year. I love playing game series from the very beginning, so I had no choice but to become a samurai. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3767269324 Not that I remember all the details of the Medieval game after 20+ years but Shogun looks like its shorter version without some of the quality-of-life features. Nevertheless, it doesn't make it less enjoyable in the slightest. You just need to start and later you find yourself sitting in a sweaty chair at 3 a.m. planning an offensive on multiple fronts. My first playthrough was as Mori clan on Expert difficulty. After a rusty start I got the hang of the mechanics and the rest was pretty easy because the faction has the Monks bonus, advantageous geographical position and a lot of provinces with armour buff. I felt I hadn't really experienced the game, that's why for my second run I chose Imagawa clan on Expert difficulty with adoption Christianity. That was way harder but I managed. I myself didn't even try running the game out of the box, I found a spectacular patch made by Vundult and installed it before launching the game for the first time. This was my first Total War game. I really wanted to finally start getting into the series for quite a while now (especially with the WH40K Total War hype), but just didn’t find the time, so, as I often tend to do, I decided to start from the very beginning and play the games in release order. Even though this game is old af, Shogun: Total War was actually a great first step into the series, with a lot of charm and atmosphere. The mix of turn-based strategy and real-time battles is very nice because I like both of those, and there’s something really satisfying about building your clan, managing your lands, and fighting for control of Japan. The game is honestly a lot easier to get into than I originally expected, but it still has plenty of depth, and the whole experience has a certain feeling that makes it memorable. I even managed to successfully conquer Japan and become Shogun in the end: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3770265398 But I do want to emphasize this strongly - keep in mind that this is a very old game. It needs some mods and community fixes to clean things up and make it work better on modern systems, so be prepared to spend a little time setting it up before playing.
