Still, after all of these years, an exceptional strategy game. It is a bit challenging to wrap your head around at first as the AI is very aggressive in the early game and training units takes much longer than in modern TW games, but if you stick with it you'll find a game that is both devilishly simple and deeply satisfying.
this is a good example , that 20 year old games are much better then what we have today.Shogun 1 to this day is a masterpiece , and I love the simplicity and strategy and tactics.The art style , and music , and gameplay over all is beautiful.If this was an indie game today , then It would be 10\10.I really recommend.So much better then what CA is doing today.
The Original Gangsta, technologically much simpler than its descendants, but like comfort food it's still satisfying even after all these years. I still have my original install CD from back in the day, and this Steam port is near-identical. A combination of board-game style play with a large-scale 3D battlefield combat mode lets you focus on the part of the game you find most appealing. The PS2-era graphics are a bit blocky and low-def (more so in battlefield mode than on the strategy map), but in context still quite good overall. The very dated GUI suffers from repetitive micro-movements and too-many-clicks design (especially by modern standards), but it's not so carpal-tunnel as to be uncomfortably unplayable. If your main focus is on commanding an army in battlefield mode, honestly your best choice is Shogun II or later. This original version, while quite good, is very tricky to control effectively due to technical limitations of the time, plus its aforementioned GUI design issues. Where the OG Total War truly shines is on the STRATEGY MAP, which despite the GUI's flaws is still the gold standard IMO. The simple color-coded 2D board-game-style map layout is instantly intuitive and clearly readable at a glance (much like the classic board game RISK), with each army represented by a flagged 3D token featuring a generic figure for its commanding officer. Your mounted Daimyo's token is unique (always-on-top when stacked), with each clan naturally only being allowed one Daimyo at any time. The flag itself is a thermometer indicator of that token's total number of soldiers, and is starred with the battle rank of the commander for easy identification of high-value combat units. Most tokens stack to a maximum of 16 units, maximum troop numbers per unit can be adjusted in settings and damaged units can be merged to create whole ones, making space for replacements to be added. Some unit types cannot be stacked (Ninja, Shinobi, etc.) which just adds to the GUI's repetitive micro-movements problem, but for the most part it's manageable unless you're dealing with truly large numbers of unstackable tokens. This is mostly an Imagawa Clan problem, TBH. You know, the clan that historically won these wars? It's 100% possible to play the game entirely on the strategy map RISK-style via these tokens without ever joining the battles (with the auto-battle dialog), or you can pick and choose which specific combat encounters are worthy of your personal attention. Even if you like to spend most of your time on the battlefield, strategy map manipulation is a huge part of the game. And as you already know if you've played any other titles in this series, sheer numbers alone do not always determine the outcome! Respects your time: Normal difficulty is reasonably challenging, but if you have limited gaming time then an Easy difficulty campaign can often be finished in a single evening. You can also streamline the victory conditions for even tighter time constraints. Just don't get overconfident; all levels of the game's AI are programmed with the Art of War and it rarely lets you forget that. When selecting the difficulty level at game creation, be aware that it jumps significantly with each increase, applying to both game modes. Former pushovers will become much more powerful, resilient and devious with every difficulty increase, and strategy-map-exclusive play becomes increasingly less viable. Fandom's Total War Wiki has the complete gameplay Manual (with keyboard shortcuts) and the Tech Tree downloadable in PDF at the bottom of the page, both strongly recommended: https://totalwar.fandom.com/wiki/Shogun:_Total_War TIP: Using Quicksave (CTRL+S) before committing an action allows you to "undo" with Quickload (CTRL + L) if things go badly. This client port occasionally has an annoying habit of randomly minimizing itself to the desktop, at least on my Windows 11 system (fully patched, updated drivers etc.). If this happens on the battlefield screen, that few moments of downtime can potentially cost you a defeat. SAVE OFTEN! CHEAT CODES: There are a few (searchable online), IF you want to use them. As a mostly strategy-map player, the only one I've ever had any use for is the strategy map reveal (toggle); the code is actually the name of one of the developers, listed in the endgame credits. The other codes are fun to try once, but they basically ruin the gameplay. Your mileage may vary.
