Thanks to this game I realized that chess really needed a shotgun. Perfect game for Steam Deck – fun, short, replayable and only 100 Mb in size

Chess-themed roguelite. Good fun as is, but the higher difficulties show the roughness of its edges. The game's main appeal is the variety of different upgrades you and the AI can get, in the form of cards that you get to choose after each floor. Different combinations of cards will unlock even more cards you can randomly get, and maybe even lead to special secret floors and encounters. Plenty of achievements to hunt for, even if a lot of them are very situational. The gameplay has many RNG elements to it: the cards you get to choose from are RNG, whether you'll get a good shot or not is RNG, and whether a pawn will promote to a good or bad piece is RNG. On single-digit difficulties, this isn't a problem, because you can plan and work around all the RNG with some good strategic thinking, and if you die, it always feels like there's something you could have done better. As you go up the difficulties, this eventually stops being the case. For me, rank 15 is where the game stopped being fun. It becomes very obvious that some cards are so much better than others, and all that variety and the prospect of interesting different combinations go out the window, because you either get good cards, or you lose. You can't really expect a game that focuses on variety to be balanced, but some cards are just straight up run-enders, i.e. Sokoban. A common suggestion to the developer is to increase your upgrade choices to 3, but that's just a workaround that doesn't address the fundamental problem. I also hate the fact that you can no longer reliably kill a 4-hp piece diagonally adjacent to you if you have 4 power: you'll get the kill only about 80% of the time, and you'll often have no choice but to go for it. Some re-balancing is required. Thankfully, there's word of a content update coming later this year, which might hopefully fix some of the issues. There's also Chase Mode, a separate gameplay score-attack survival mode that I particularly enjoy, with pieces coming at you from all four directions. Chase mode only takes a short while to play, and it's fun to try to beat your own high score, so it's a good way to kill some quick time.

Unlike so-called "Auto Chess" games, this game can actually teach you proper chess. The white said plays normal chess, and the black side has a shotgun. Roguelike elements add variety, but don't detract from the sheer joy of meatshotting the king.

Unironically one of my favorite chill games. Up there with the likes of Noita & Slay the Spire with how you can just zone out for hours or fit in a quick run while waiting in a que lobby. Its banger tracks, sounds effects, tactile feedback and SHEER CHARM alone make this a wishlist if not outright buy. Give the demo a go and you will see what I mean

I just got the "true secret ending", alongside the advancement "exorcised", and can officially say that I am top 2% of players, (although there is a known bug with the advancements so it's prob. more like top 10%) just telling you so you know that I may be slightly biased. Not only do I highly recommend this indie gem, but I have a few responses to some of the common complaints that I hear. "it has no content!" People who say this probably didn't even play it for 3 hours and are just annoyed they didn't get a refund. This game has LOADS of content, if you just look at the advancement list and exclude the ones saying "win with this, this, and this" you can see dozens of unique goals you can attempt, and that's just in the basic mode with nothing special! There are 3 main modes, Throne mode, (the basic one, which has the goal of killing the boss on floor 12) Endless mode, (with the goal of surviving as many floors as possible) and Chase mode. (with the goal of just beating sh*t up) In addition, this game has mods, with whole new worlds and cards and pieces! This game is deeper than many triple A games AND IT EVEN HAS A PLOT! "this game is too random" This one stems from two main things; bullet spread and card choice. For bullet spread, there are cards that reduce it, (engraved scope, high focus, etc.) and cards that allow you to do damage without your gun! (grenades, blade, rats, throwing cannonballs, etc.) Well what if you can't get those cards? Well a beta version of an update coming soon has a mechanic to fix that, which I will not spoil because I am a good human. "it's too hard!" This is a legitimate complaint, and quite valid. I am a chess fan overall, so for me this game is awesome, but some people just don't like chess. I will share some ideas so you can enjoy this game as much as I have. 1. Download the mod "discovered check warning" and all it's requirements (make sure the mod is enabled and read the descriptions of both mods if it isn't working) this won't allow advancements but it can help reduce frustration 2. Take cards like black mist and other mobility/survivability cards if you see them 3. Take time with your moves, and consider multiple options (remember you can middle click to show threat zones) 4. Consider both the black and white cards when picking 5. Have fun, and remember that it doesn't cost you your queen soul to touch grass once in a while! "it's too fingerspitzengefuhl!" wtf man this spiel is perfect for you
