I suck at normal chess, so this game is a great escape from that fact. Don't get me wrong, I suck at this too but a bit less

Very fun, absolutely worth the price. What makes Shotgun King unique to me is that instead of solely focusing on creating the best build for yourself, you are also focused on trying to give your opponent the weakest possible build, due to the system of tying player upgrades to opponent upgrades. Many times, you will pick a perk not because it is the better one, but because it gives your opponent a weaker upgrade. I got at least ~30 good hours of gameplay out of this game before it got frustrating, which is above average for most roguelikes. The game has two main problems: 1: difficulty curve for the ascension levels is not smooth at all. You'll probably clear the game on your first run or two, and will hold a very high winrate up until ascension 10 or so. At this point, your winrate will quickly fall into the single digits quite rapidly. By ascension 13/14, the game had begun getting incredibly frustrating, and ascension 15 is just plain awful. High difficulty scaling in roguelikes is nothing new, but in these deckbuilder turn-based roguelikes it rarely feels like skill can make up for being unlucky. 2: the way in which difficulty works severely limits which guns are viable. All of the guns are valid at the lowest difficulties, but by the last couple the only playable guns seem to be the Victoria (high damage and accuracy, low ammo and reserves) and Ramesses II (a gun whose mechanic allows you to instantly kill pieces by pushing them off the board). The other guns simply can not keep up, which decreases the variety in gameplay at the higher difficulties. Additionally, unlike many roguelikes where you can acquire nigh-unstoppable builds (binding of isaac, slay the spire, peglin, etc), I never felt like I reached that level of overpowered with a build in this game. This is likely because of the item cap (10 cards, acquired at a fixed rate) and the fact that each item selection made for yourself comes with a strength increase for the opponent.

Thanks to this game I realized that chess really needed a shotgun. Perfect game for Steam Deck – fun, short, replayable and only 100 Mb in size
