June 2025
Sky Force Anniversary is a modern remake of a beloved 2004 mobile shmup—and it shows how much heart and firepower a simple vertical shooter can pack when it’s handled with care. With its clean design, addictive upgrade loop, and satisfying gameplay, this game nails the “easy to play, hard to master” formula and keeps you coming back for one more round. What Works: -Satisfying Gameplay Loop: The core is classic: pilot your aircraft, blast enemies, dodge bullets, and rescue stranded humans. Each level sets clear goals (like destroying 100% of enemies or not taking damage), giving you multiple reasons to replay and perfect your runs. -Progression That Feels Good: You collect stars from defeated enemies and use them to upgrade your ship—everything from health and firepower to wing cannons and magnet strength. It’s a grind, yes, but a rewarding one that makes each attempt feel a little more empowering. -Co-Op Mode: The game supports local co-op, and it’s a blast. Two-player mode adds chaotic fun and strategic synergy, without messing up the balance too much. -Polished Visuals & Sound: The visuals strike a great balance between retro charm and modern shine. Smooth animations, great lighting, and thumping, energetic music keep the adrenaline high. -Challenge With Fairness: The game ramps up difficulty steadily. Each level has four difficulty settings, and you’ll need to grind to progress—but not in a punishing way. You’re always improving. What Doesn’t Fly So High: -Repetition Sets In: With only a limited number of levels, replaying each one multiple times to meet challenge goals can wear thin for players less into the grind. -No Online Co-Op or Competitive Play: While local co-op is great, the absence of online features feels like a missed opportunity in today’s connected era. -Old-School Storytelling: The story, such as it is, is minimal and not particularly engaging. That’s fine for a shmup, but don’t expect any narrative depth here. Sky Force Anniversary is an excellent example of how to modernize a retro-style game without losing the charm that made it fun in the first place. It’s a tight, addictive, and beautifully crafted shmup that’s perfect for short bursts of action—or long sessions chasing 100% perfection. If you love arcade shooters or want a casual-but-challenging game to fill your time, this one’s got wings. Best for fans of arcade shoot ‘em ups, perfectionists, local co-op enthusiasts Rating: 9/10

It's a really fun and polished bullet hell game. Sometimes the clouds block your view and you fly into a whole bunch of enemies but i think thats just the fun of the game

More of a neutral thumb for this one, but defaulting to positive since I appreciate serious attempts to remaster or otherwise reboot older games. Sky Force Reloaded is proving to be a lot more fun for me, but mostly because ship controls in Anniversary feel oddly sluggish. The upgrade costs in both games are far too grindy, though. Beyond that, a decent and nostalgic arcade shooter experience.

w game def fun the bosses look like the crazy shi mumbo jumbo would build its fire This game isn't as long as Reloaded but hell yeah this is FIRE I grew up on reloaded and playing this, it feels like the same game but just as fresh! Arachnotron and Nasty Owl are some of the coolest boss designs ever, the bosses are great and fun too. It's fun to get into and generally a great game!

One of the classic vertical shoot 'em up games that's been revamped for the modern systems. Will run on modest hardware, and while it isn't verified, this runs on the Steam Deck without issue. Get the Anniversary & Reloaded bundle at sale. Absolutely worth it.
