Love this game. It's pretty simple to understand but has an incredible amount of strategic depth. Once you know what you are doing, it is incredibly satisfying to get a successful run.

This game is incredibly elegant from a game design standpoint. No aspect of the game mechanics feels superfluous, and the mechanics are only ever as complex as they absolutely need to be. For all that simplicity, the game feels incredibly deep, and (especially at the higher difficulty levels) the game only presents decisions that have engaging, difficult tradeoffs. Personally, I love that the game is strictly turn-based (no ticking clock, no twitchy action) and focuses on exploration and economy, rather than combat. Slipways' clockwork makes most "grand strategy" games seem baroque and tedious. The game was definitely designed with mouse and keyboard in mind, but nevertheless I've played it exclusively on Steam Deck and had a good time. (You might need to set up your own bindings to get all of the functionality feeling comfortable and convenient.) I do wish the interface was a bit more controller-friendly, and that you could make the text a little bit bigger.

Slipways is a fun game and I don't regret the time I've spent with it. But it's not quite the game that is advertised, and it's not quite tuned to be the game it actually is, at least from what I've played through a half-dozen runs on the default difficulty ("Reasonable"), half of which I took to completion. The game promises to be a lighter-weight version of a 4x strategy game -- though minus the battles, so I suppose it's more of a "3x", which is a good thing in my mind. And it *is* lighter than a GalCiv-like, but not *that* much lighter: runs still took me several hours apiece. The 60-minute gametime mentioned in the jacket copy is technically possible, but at that speed you will make a lot of mistakes that will either end your run early or result in a low score. It's possible the actual quick/arcade-y version of a space civ game can be realized on the lowest difficulty (which I have not tried), but on the default difficulty, definitely not. The scoring thresholds also seem a little overtuned. I may be missing something, but it seems like consistent 5-star and "platinum" ratings depend on very good luck from planet layout and fog-of-war reveals. It's common to end up in a blind alley of your sector with planets that have no hope of getting properly supplied, and if this happens even one or two times it's such a huge drag on your score that you'll probably just be limping to the end of the run. It makes high scores feel more like jackpots than exercises of skill...which is maybe something appealing to some players, but not to me. It's possible the best fix to this is one of framing rather than actual design changes. Perhaps the score thresholds are just too high and could have been adjusted with further testing, or perhaps a 5-star ranking (or 3 stars for the campaign mode) should be framed as a huge achievement, with a platinum as something genuinely special, with e.g. just one achievement for getting a platinum literally once ever. But the UI and the achievement system doesn't present it this way -- there's even an *entirely separate set of achievements* for doing every achievement on the highest difficulty, which is utterly diabolical -- so it ends up just feeling like a shorter 4x game where early-game challenges can't be overcome with mid-/late-game investments or clever strategy. Again, I'm happy I bought the game and I'm glad it exists, and I recommend it for optimizers and fans of the genre. But I suspect most players of my disposition will hit a wall with it sooner than they would expect.

I've been playing this since the PICO-8 version and I do recommend the upgrade to the Steam version. I didn't find the 7,8,9,0 map overlays until sixty hours into the game. I just beat my all-time high score by a hundred points and I can't stop celebrating. This has become my favorite civ game, and I continue to play it when I've moved on from Sid Meier and Stellaris and the rest for being too detail-oriented. Highly, highly recommended. Addendum: At 69.9 hours I reached a certain threshold and received *a tutorial popup*, as apparently there is more content I'd never seen before, because I hadn't made it that far yet, and today I did.

An impressively fun game, for how relatively simple its premise. The campaign especially impressed me. This game's mechanics really scratch the "optimizer" itch in the brain, and the way the game gently forces you to take leaps of faith and lock in decisions is a really clever balance that doesn't feel bad, but also encourages you to not *over* optimize everything. Really fun, games can be pretty brief once you get into it, so it's a nice "I wanna kill 30-45 min with something that makes me think" game now that I've played through the meat of it.
