I loved the original, this is pretty much more of the same but with a bit more polish. I love the twitchy nature of this game and the level of skill that it takes to truly become great at it. The respawn times are fast so even if you die, if you die at the right place and right time, you can respawn and immediately retaliate against your attacker. The way physics work, mastering them becomes a feat that grants you extremely control of a map. From things like health pickups and the like. The original game was a masterpiece of gameplay. This refines that and brings to it less ugly and larger maps and a few cute little gimmicks that add interesting additional elements to the game. I recommend it for sure. Edit: The player base is pretty low right now so if you can handle some bots mixed in its still worthwhile but if you can't you might wanna pass up on it unless you have some friends that want to play with you. For me I played the original during the age of subspace continuum and this game and that + savage 2 filled my competitive gaming niche big time.
The server password protection feature doesn't work and someone who is presumably a friend of the developer invaded a private match. When I notified the soldat 2 community discord of this issue I was met with abuse and told this was normal. Great game, but off putting community.
I played Soldat like almost 20 years ago, I didn’t even know that this game will shape my whole life and career. At the age 12, I started a community website and forum, hosted servers, developed scripts, designed maps, developed small tools and apps. So it basicly forced me to be a full-stack developer and a good manager over the years. Now I’m a CTO at company with 150 people, and I have 4 different start-ups. Now Soldat 2 is even better, it looks and feels awesome, it brings the game to whole new level. I wish I was 12 again. Totally recommended.
The first Soldat is easily my most played game. I even learned programming and Photoshop just to make scripts and interfaces for S1, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that a single game has influenced my career. So, after thousands of hours played, I feel experienced enough to be able to compare it to its successor. Soldat 2 is shaping up to be a worthy sequel. It's dynamic, the movement is just right, the new weapons introduce cool ways of eliminating each other, and the new maps look and feel great. Especially after the total rehaul update, the game embraced its arcade nature and has gotten visually appealing and clear at the same time. I just love how shooting the rocket launcher brings me back to Quake 2 times, where calculating the enemy's trajectory in your mind resulted in a satisfying kill. Guiding the RPG projectile also adds a new way of dealing with sneakier players, and the explosions push knives around for even more unexpected frags. Thanks to the friendly community, we're getting more maps (there's a built-in map editor), external sites for tracking stats, and lots of cool ideas for improvements during early access. Its playerbase slowly grows, so seeing 6v6 matches on public servers is becoming a more common sight lately – but if pubs are not for you, you're more than welcome to join ranked 3v3 matches and get your posterior kicked. Overall, I'm having lots of fun with Soldat 2, even during its early access. I'm confident that it's going to grow in the coming months, so I better go back to mastering the rocket launcher.
April 2022 update: The overhaul makes the game feel even truer to the original. I just wish there were more people playing. Original review: I played the original Soldat years ago and participated in worldwide gathers etc. Soldat 2 definitely has the feel of the original. I'm having fun learning the new weapons and some of the new movement mechanics. I will say that right now the soldier feels a little more "floaty" than I remember in the original, and the thrust of the jet seems to be a bit weaker. Not saying those are negatives, just observations. For readers that have never played Soldat, imagine playing an FPS like CounterStrike but on a Worms map. You control a soldier who can move left, right, crouch, jump, and use jet boots. You point and click to shoot. Each weapon has different bullet speed and stats, and some weapons such as the M79 grenade launcher shoots a slower projectile in an arc. It's quite satisfying to learn the particulars of each weapon, which kept me coming back in the original and is the same here. Hoping more people join in so that the servers are more populated!
