I do not understand why this game has a Mixed score on Steam. Maybe because I never played the original on the Wii? Other people keep mentioning this mod that is the "definitive experience" or something but after looking into it, it looked like just graphical upscaling. That's cool and all, and if you want that all the power to you, but the game looks fine without it and it didn't seem to impact gameplay in any way (which matters to me FAR more than graphics) so I didn't even bother. Un-modded, this was a solid 8.5/10 experience. It played well, was a lot of fun, and was incredibly replayable. I even went out of my way to collect every red ring and I'm even interested in getting every S rank for the fun of it. It's somewhat short, but that's not uncommon for Sonic games. You really get your moneys worth if you go out of your way to hunt for secrets, but I realize that isn't for everyone so take that into account. I'd say like 9-10 hours casual and like 15-20 completionist, maybe more. I'm writing this at 12 hours and like I said I got all 180 red rings, unlocked Super Sonic, got the credits, and I'd say I've got like half of the 44 Acts S ranked. I ran into a small handful of glitches, like "I could count on one hand how many" small. Bummer, but from what I've seen of the original in YouTube videos the glitches I experienced weren't new additions to this remaster. (Plus... I mean... it is a Sonic game... so yeah.) If you are interested in this game but on the fence and the only thing dissuading you is the mixed score and the negative reviews calling this game a "crime against remasters"... I'm telling you I either got a different build of the game than they did or they've got nostalgia glasses on because I don't regret this purchase in any way. Granted I did get it on sale, so take that into account.

Leaving a positive review not for the game itself, but for the recent fan project: Sonic Colors Project Re-Rainbow. Picked this up on sale just so I could play that, and boy it is everything this remaster should've been from Day 1. So yeah, if you can, definitely worth picking up now just for Re-Rainbow and then you've got yourself the definitive Sonic Colors experience.

It's good once you download a 21GB mod that fixes the entire game and makes it look like a proper remaster (project re-rainbow)

This remaster is an embarrassment and a sad reminder of how poorly Sonic has been treated in the last 5 years. A rushed and underfunded mess. The art style is ruined, the game play suffers from multiple new glitches, there's frequent stuttering and pauses during levels, the audio mix is a mess, there's massive loading times and all the cutscenes are AI upscaled videos instead of re-rendered. That being said, the fan made modding effort known as Project Re-Rainbow has slowly been fixing all this games problems and the team is doing an outstanding job. It's not yet finished, but the early access preview is great and makes this version of the game highly worth playing. The current state of the mod is already a massive upgrade and I highly recommend it to anyone who owns this game. Would I recommend Sonic Colours Ultimate? No. Would I recommend this game while it's on sale and with the community fixes and mods installed? Most definitely. Sonic Colours is one of the best modern Sonic games out there.
