love this game. Very easy to hop in an out as needed without having to relearn a billion combos, controls, or skill trees in order to progress at all. For middle aged dads with kids, a career and plenty of life that makes gaming cumbersome and sporadic, this is exactly the kind of game I can sink my teeth into. It's beautiful, it's nostalgic, it's incredibly fun, and it's not too much of a commitment. Pick it up as you have time and race a few rounds, then play with the kids, make dinner, tinker on a side project, race a few more rounds, put the kids to bed, catch up on prep for tomorrow, race another round and off to bed. Perfection.

I don't even like racing games and this is the most fun I've had in a long damn time. If you like Star Wars, get it. If you like Need for Speed or Burnout get it. If you like driving so fast you are always inches away from death the absolutely get it.

Edit: Updated - accidently mixed up the deck and the machine. It's so refreshing to get the Star Wars franchise out of the dirty hands of EA, and this is a great example of why. Ex-burnout devs put together the spiritual successor to Racer, and they nailed every aspect. I was a bit nervous it would run terribly on the Steam Deck, but with low settings it runs really consistently at 30fps which was a nice surprise. The only downside of playing on the deck is using the podracers - they are so fast, that it's often hard to see what's coming up on the map in front of you on the smaller screen. On Steam Machine, I'm running it on high settings with FSR set to quality at 1440p, and it's getting around 50fps. If you drop a few settings down to medium it'll easily hit 60.

What it is, what it isnt, and if it is good, and a finale where I give a tip to ANYONE who wants to play it. What it is: It is a Roguelite racer game where losing doesn't necessarily mean losing, but dying repeatedly absolutely does. Planet progression is a risk/reward game where you can either take on regular races to earn cash, and Eliminations in the campaign to earn rare parts for your craft, in exchange for being at danger of losing it all (or at least one of your lives, once you pass the opening act, apparently). What it isnt: Star Wars, Episode 1 Racer. Unlike its predecessor, which was based on winning at all costs and managing part qualities (which you do have to do SOMEWHAT here, but unlike in the original where lower stats means parts work less, parts malfunctioning means that you are hit with an RPG status effect until you can get out of the races) Is it Good: Yes, it is a steep price to pay for a roguelite game, but there are a variety of game modes that are going to make me play it well into the hundred hour mark, and the races are more action oriented than the usual roguelite or roguelike affair of Card Combo builders. If you are not a fan of the original Racer, buy this on a discount, and if you are a fan, be prepared to relearn the game, to a degree. For experienced pod racers, you might be disappointed by the afterburners system, dont worry, your favorite press your luck boost mechanic is just a bit further in, and you get to use both of them, and synergize with them. Tip: In the menu controls, go to video, and turn off Takedown Cam. You still get the afterburner from it, and you wont repeatedly take yourself out looking at someone else's misfortune. The default in this game is to rubberneck at the car crashes, and you can turn them off. Edit: There was 1 demerit I had to give this game. They have a cat that shows up in the campaign hub occasionally. The Player Character, Shade, when I prompt him to pet the cat, says "I am here for racing." MF, YOU CAN BE A RACER, AND STILL PET CATS. THIS IS A SIN, FUSE GAMES. **SIN**.
