I can't believe I never posted a review for this game. Starpoint Gemini 2 is truly a gem. I was deployed and had a weird itch to just zoom around in space in a big ship with the ability to divert power to engines, shields, or guns. I know it only shows I played for 28 hours at the time of this review, but I was playing this back when we didn't have internet connectivity, almost all of my time played was offline (I truly have no idea how much time I have in this game). During a time that was pretty arduous, this was a great escape. Mind you, I didn't play the campaign, I stuck to free roam, swashbuckling various ships, upgrading my vessels, investigating anomalies, battling fleets, etc. The freedom I was allowed in this microchasm was something I sorely needed. This review isn't as much a "Is good game, here's why" and is more a "Hey Dev, thanks!" It's been a long time since I played and felt it deserved the attention. I don't know what it is, but just the thought of the ambient soundtrack after a battle and zooming off to another part of the map brings me a deep sense of enigmatic joy. The visuals are absolutely stellar, the combat feels good, and the UI is very comfortable. So, that being said, if you're someone deployed, or stuck in the middle of nowhere and need something to dump some time into for R and R, I highly advise giving this game a shot. It fills that niche perfectly.
the story doesn't really grip you until about 3 hrs in, but it's really well done, voice acting is laughable, the controls flat out suck, it's a bit of a grind fly to location fight, rinse and repeat. The story takes awhile to get rolling but when it does, it's the best part of this game. Getting this game on sale is your best option if you ask me. Some may like it others may not, but I give it a thumbs up for the simple fact that the story is good.
Space RPG done well. Don't worry about realism, this game is just fun as it is. The physics is well done, but the Gemini system objects are fixed in space ie. planets don't move. There are lots of interesting "terrain" features in the form of wormholes, riftways (space rivers), radiation zones, lightning zones, etc. There is also lots of space sound, space fire, space debris and space rocks. Combat is basically space tanks. Freighters are available if you want to mine or scavenge. You can build a small fleet and command it in battle. Only con is space flight can get tedious. Space is BIG. No multilplayer, but SG wasn't meant to compete with eve online or any of its derivatives in the multiplayer arena. Lastly, you can ignore the campaign and just play the game factions against each other and space battle forever as good or bad or any level in between depending on your reputation. I have not tired of this yet, although it gets a bit samey after a while. On (Kubuntu) Linux I had to auto-hide my taskbar to get it to work properly in fullscreen. I played around with different proton versions. 10 has worked best for me. SG2 DLC are ok, nothing specially different except a badass ship of your choice. I will review origins once I finish it.
