Starts of really slow but there is really fun gameplay loop here. I can see why some hardcore fans dislike this title ( the lack of character portraits and kinda meh personalities of the villagers). If those things doesn't bother you that much then you will have a lot of fun here. Especially if you get this on a steam sale ( i got it for around $3 in local currency)

Now that I've finally gotten every achievement, I think it's probably time to throw my two cents in. PoOT isn't a bad game, it just feels like filler when compared to Another Wonderful Life or Friends from Mineral Town. If you are VERY new to farming games and are looking for a low barrier to entry, this one really isn't bad, though I should put about five asterisks next to my thumbs up because unfortunately, it comes with stipulations. PoOT's story is very basic; you move to your Grandpa's farm in the titled town, and help the mayor and townsfolk turn it into a bustling tourist spot. That's a fine enough plot for a farming game. Keep it simple and set us loose! Unfortunately, where PoOT could have foregone an elaborate story and focused more on Olive Town's inhabitants, it sort of... falls flat in that area too. The characters are slightly charming, but still overall forgettable. There's SO MANY heart events with the marriage candidate and townsfolk but rarely do they ever feel special. They're more like anecdotes that sometimes get a chuckle out of you, but usually fade from memory pretty quick. The heart events for the DLC characters actually felt a little beefier surprisingly, but marrying a DLC candidate is pretty lame since they don't participate in festivals and only get the standard family events (which there aren't that many to begin with). I was really hoping for more in-depth family mechanics, but family life is pretty bland. It's so awkward having your child grow up only to sit out in every single festival and have only a handful of dialogue lines. Your family doesn't give you any gifts (actually, you can't get gifts from anyone in this game, except for a few very specific events with certain characters) or have any special events outside of obtaining your child, the child taking their first steps, and then growing up. I actually was so bored to tears by my marriage that I ended up divorcing, which I NEVER do, just to start dating every unattached single to see more events while I grinded out achievements. Speaking of achievements... just don't. It lures you in by making you think they'll be doable in a short amount of time, but the Cow Helm is devious and it took me until year SEVEN to level up the journey sprite. Going for all achievements just isn't worth your time unless you're planning on selling off your animals and sleeping to speed up time. It's agony. As for farming and the overall gameplay loop, it's actually pretty good, at least at the beginning. I binged many hours at the beginning because there was always something to work towards, and that kept me going. The speed and swiftness in which you perform daily tasks definitely helps the early game become less tedious. However, my main issues with farming involve the fact that debris spawn on your farm WAY TOO FAST. It's like Rune Factory 5 on speed. The idea is to put pathing down so that stuff doesn't spawn, but that really doesn't help when stuff can just spawn in places that you CANNOT put path down. Furthermore, there's a huge emphasis on using maker machines, which isn't horrible in concept, but these machines take up way too much space and there is no way to aesthetically design your farm because of it. Every maker, chest, and building requires a ton of free space around it just to place it down (don't even get me started on the big makers, lol). Now, you do get plenty of farm space with 3 areas in total and can eventually unlock a shortcut from your house to area three, but it just doesn't feel good. I would say it reminds me of a mobile game in the layout department. I came to finally remember everyone's names and enjoy my time in Olive Town, for about the first 3 years, but after that it grew stale quickly. You interact with the harvest sprites, but the Goddess doesn't have a major role at all, only appearing in a few cutscenes after completing certain renovation projects. I don't even mind that too much, but her entire existence is just mindlessly walking around her shrine. She doesn't have any heart events, she has only a few lines of dialogue, and her overall presence is very minimal. Definitely a shame for such a prominent HM/SoS staple. Also, breeding animals in this game is mandatory to raise your product quality, so don't wait forever to do that if that's something you want. I was confused as to why my year 1 animals wouldn't produce quality over a certain amount, and it's because I typically don't bother breeding. There may have been a tutorial about it, but if there was I don't remember. In conclusion, PoOT as a SoS title is just... okay. If you don't like the chibi look of Mineral Town or the story-driven structure of a Wonderful Life, it might hit the sweet spot. But definitely get it on sale, and keep your expectations tempered. I don't regret my time playing it, but going for every achievement was probably a bad move, since the content runs dry fairly quickly.

Even though the genre has been reinvented about 5000 times there is a certain simplicity of execution that Story of Seasons excels at that makes it a much comfier game to me than Rune Factory or Stardew. This game is arguably less mechanically complex than even the GBA entries but that often works to its benefit. It doesn't become a micromanagement business simulator which I think, for as fun as that can be, goes against the spirit of the original game on SNES. It's just a game where you inherit a farm, build it up, and ultimately establish a relationship with largely two dimensional NPCs (For what it's worth, I do think the characters are more interesting than most of the other games, but they're far from complex individuals with wants and needs) I did quite a bit on switch already but I don't remember if it even has simple things like fertilizer, you just plant crop and wait for crop and the level is based on how often you interact with crop in a rune factory-esque level up menu. My main critiques is, some events really feel like they were gonna be playable and they just aren't, the easter egg hunt is a cutscene. Also there are some tremendously cute characters like Beth, Angela and Patricia who aren't romanceable, but that is part of SoS's ongoing mission of being a milf cuckold simulator which is charming in its own right. Despite considerable ease of use introductions like almost immediate access to Sprinklers and backpacks, I think this is the game that is closest to bringing me to the same feeling as the original SNES game. I don't think this is worth a full 40 dollars or anything but 15-20 it's an easy recommend. It runs way better than it did on Switch and fulfills a niche that other casual farm sims have long worked past. I bought the season pass this go and the expanded areas don't seem worth anything, unless you really want one of the bachelors or bachelorettes or the costumes or it's a considerable sale I would skip it. If you want interesting characters with a lot of personality, You can't go wrong with any of the Rune Factories. If you want a straightforward farming game and don't have Mineral Town that might be your first go to, but if you're coming from Mineral Town or just didn't jive with the frankly cryptic progression of that game, this one is excellent. Also Reina is cute.

Story of Seasons: PoOT is a great addition to the Story of Season franchise. Instead of a farmland in the rural area/mountains, you get shipped off to a farmland on an island where you help to develop the town and make it a tourist-worthy location that cruise ships would like to dock at. There are a lot more customizable options that make the game very personalized for players, and a lot of portions that you can unlock and develop so it feels like you're really building on the gameplay for hours of fun, until it gets too repetitive. Pros: - Customizable character appearance for your MC at the beginning, and later you can change their looks once you've unlocked that part - Lots of farmland, with 2 unlockable areas for more space - Additional unlockable farmland areas with one of each of the four seasons for forever planting - A wide variety of crops and fruits to discover, and lots of animal varieties - Plenty of decor, accessories, machinery to build (instead of buy) - Changing the look of the town through story progression/development - Unlockable in-game achievements that award you items - Daily in-game quests that give you money - Customizable house and furniture layout, and having more than one pet - Lots of fun characters and interesting conversations - Once unlocked, magical sprites gift you items almost daily Cons: - TOO MUCH variety of items and crops. There are so many machines (some crops or goods go through 2-3 product transitions that need 1 machine each transition) and not enough space to accommodate them all, even with the expanded farmland. You also have to keep building storage boxes to store them all. - Farmland layout is weird, and you have ponds that crop up out of nowhere and make placements of barns, crops, etc very difficult - Not enough in-game storage, even with bag upgrades. Refrigerator also doesn't have enough space, even with the upgraded space. Connected to the issue with the game having too many items, and too many varieties/levels to each item - Complicated time management (due to the game having too many additional places, getting around is a challenge) - Limited variety/quantity of items you can sell in the shipping box per day - Relationship progression here with villagers and marriage candidates are much slower even with constant gift-giving - Game has an animal you can ride, and a motorcycle, but placement and number of machines and buildings makes traversing through your farm hard, and your "mode of transpo" pretty useless (at least for me) - Museum (one of the added items for completion through collecting) displays cannot be altered or customized once items are placed - Magical sprites don't help you with your farm chores, which would otherwise not have been a problem if the farm wasn't big, and you didn't have a lot of animals and crops Summary: Interesting new angle to the franchise, and the customizable portions do make it a fun play. There's a great story, and the animation and music are amazing. The characters and dialogue are fun too. Sadly, SoS tried to give the game too many additional things, that sometimes the game gets really repetitive and redundant in a not good way. The Harvest Moon franchise is supposed to be repetitive because of the farming aspect, but because PoOT has so many things you can do, it sometimes feels overwhelming. Too much to mine, too much animal products to collect daily, too many crops to harvest, too many unlocked areas to go to, etc. Great game especially if you love the franchise and farming sims, but buy it on sale. And don't bother spending on those added costumes since there's a lot of free in-game outfits you can naturally unlock.
