Stubbs the Zombie, an original xbox classic that has finally been remastered and still shows very little age. Far from a remake, the game is fundamentally the same with a lot of quality of life changes (being able to turn off the absolutely dreadful green filter is a huge plus) and for its price, as well as fully functional, seamless split screen co-op, Stubbs very much has a pulse worth purchasing. A relic of its time in more than its retro-futuristic, Matt Groening-esque humour with some outright juvenile toilet jokes to boot, this game is to zombies what Destroy All Humans is to Aliens and with a lot of the same gameplay DNA, in fact. There is something so special about early 2000s games and their willingness to push technology with gimmick mechanics in fun, innovative ways. Mechanically, there is still no game like Stubbs and what Stubbs was able to accomplish on the original xbox, on the famous Halo engine, is honestly kind of a spectacle in itself. Back in the day, kid you very likely were in complete awe of being able to have sizable hordes and to traverse a surprisingly large map with a huge sense of scale near the end. Stubbs is surprisingly political, and much like Fallout and once again, Destroy All Humans, it uses its Cold War era, white picket fence and nuclear family retro futurism gimmick to critique the attitude of Americans in the George Bush Jr presidency. A game originally from 2003, it was impossible for there not to be some political subtext that critiques Republican Jingoism, while itself, having no message that is inherently liberal or leftist. It is very South Parkish in that regard, it is quick to critique and it doesn't bother to show a more sensible solution, because at that point it becomes preaching and its not funny anymore. But the game doesn't pull its punches, its intentional use of phrases representing Cold War militarism, over confidence in the American armed forces (NPCs screaming 'An army base! We are saved!' before you gnaw into their skulls) and McCarthy politics and slogans (soldiers and rednecks remarking that it is all some communist conspiracy or infiltration, or that the zombies themselves are the result of marxism, soldiers often accuse the zombies of being ideologically aligned with communism and even scream 'better dead than red', ironically enough), as well as outright explaining the retro-sci-fi setting is only possible because of Operation Paperclip's controversial brain-drain of Nazi German scientists. And they outright show the guy responsible for the in-game technology, Hitler Salute in front of a Third Reich Hazenkreuz flag, complete with the notion that he is now "on the side of the good guys" and is a fully nationalized American. Meanwhile, a lot of the uppity, snooty, yuppie coded prosperity-oligarchs are only one generation removed from their hyper rural, redneck origins. All of this comes full circle with the portrayal of rural Americans as being illiterate, violent, war veterans with antique weaponry and tactics, lead by a bigot with a Confederate cap, is very clearly drawing parallels from post-war America ultranationalism to Bush Jr's Iraq era of new wave, post 9-11 conservatism. This is not the first time the zombie genre has gotten political, in fact, George A Romero's iconic films, who have fathered this genre almost single handedly, was extremely heavy in political subtext regarding class, race and also, extreme critiques of American exceptionalism, American consumerism and American consumerist culture. So really, Stubbs is right at home without any of the subtlety. As for the gameplay? Its honestly great, especially in co-op. This is a short game that can be beaten in a single sitting, is never really frustrating and at most, has minimal jank. The remaster team did a great job at making it playable and adding some quality of life stuff, but once again, the co op is almost the best way to experience this game. Some of the absurdist humour is low brow, but I personally think the dance-off with the police chief to iconic songs of the era is actually a peak moment in gaming in general. Stubbs really stumbled so future games could run with mechanics that were fundamentally built around the idea of being actually fun. The gore is surprisingly satisfying, the amount of zombies you can muster is impressive given the engine limitations, its zany, silly, funny and extremely stupid fun. Worth the hype, better than your nostalgia remembers and above all, affordable, works out of the box and a game worthy of owning.

My biggest regret with Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is not playing it sooner. The number of times I noticed this game at Blockbuster in my younger years and never sprung for it is shameful. It is not a masterpiece, but well worth the $4.99 on sale (hell, I'd even pay full price, it holds up well). You'll like this if you're a fan of: [*]Fun gameplay - Converting swaths of enemies into your zombie minions doesn't get old [*]Humor - This game dropped in 2005 and some of the jokes definitely date this one. While some modern audiences could find a thing or 2 offensive, this is very well done. Not lmao funny, but a several good chuckles [*]Short games - Stubbs does not over stay his welcome, the game can be finished in under 2 hours. For most people on normal difficulty I'd say it's a solid 3.5-5 hours [*]Zombies- Not the 28 Days Later variety, but the slow, semi-comical ones Look elsewhere for: [*]Deep mechanics - The game is old, but even for its there aren't many systems to engage with. You've got a handful of abilities- go cause mayhem [*]Strong dialogue - While I thought the gameplay was great, hearing the same voice lines frequently will definitely rub some people the wrong way. There are so many times one can hear, "MY BRAINS!!!!" without rolling their eyes [*]A lengthy experience - There aren't collectibles or side activities. Fortunately there are achievements for replayability, but the game is short. In this day and age 20+ hours minimum is a must for some, you won't get that here Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is the product of a bygone era that holds up well. It runs great on the Steam Deck and can be played on modern hardware with little to no issues. While I think the value on sale is better, you won't go wrong spending an afternoon drowning out the noise and spinning this up.

This is one of the greatest games of all time. Does it run perfectly? No, some zones have some bad frame rate issues, but my man i have a lot of hours in the xbox original and this version is playable at all. The world needs more Stubbs, fun light hearted dumb games like this are to rare today.

This zombie game is great ! You gotta play the stinky, vicious, but still sympatic zombie named "Stubb" and kill everyone standing in your way. Various special attack options are offered to you to cause chaos and defend yourself, just as farting to temporary stunt enemies, throw your exploding bladder, roll your severed head like a bowling bowl, and much more... But for me the most interesting and fun part in this game is that when you kill humans, they will tranform into zombies and join your evergrowing undead horde at your command (you can literally push them from behind to make them go in the direction you choose). If you are into zombie fandom but also like humor and want to try to be on the zombie side, this game is just for you.

The cult classic that turned 20 this year. I enjoyed it's short duration and hope there will be a sequel. The game is old but still very enjoyable...it reminds me of the Playstation 2 era. Which is always a good thing. Give it a try you won't regret it.
