Sept. 2025
Summon, developed and published by Goosix Games, is a quirky, low-budget indie title that walks the fine line between absurdist comedy and casual puzzle-solving. From the moment the game begins, it’s clear that traditional storytelling is not the goal here. Instead, Summon plunges the player into a meme-laced fever dream starring none other than "Papich"—a recognizable internet figure in Eastern European meme culture. The game opens with a bizarre encounter: a man in camouflage delivers a mysterious piece of paper labeled "Summons" to Papich's door, and from there, the world unravels into a strange series of tasks, puzzles, and encounters that don't follow conventional logic but absolutely commit to their surreal tone. What makes Summon so distinctive is how wholeheartedly it leans into internet culture. The humor is unapologetically self-referential, littered with capybaras, meme faces, ironic sound bites, and obscure callbacks to Twitch streamers, YouTube personalities, and other internet oddities. Rather than attempting to elevate the meme aesthetic into satire or commentary, Summon chooses to embrace it as the core language of the world. This isn’t a game trying to tell a profound story; it’s one that knows its audience—those who live and breathe chaotic internet humor—and speaks to them directly. That’s both its strength and its limitation, because while it's refreshing in its boldness, it can also alienate anyone outside that digital subculture. Mechanically, the game offers more than seven puzzle types, each framed by a set of objectives that range from the mildly logical to the completely absurd. Puzzles are loosely connected by a sequence of missions or tasks assigned by increasingly strange characters, including, amusingly, the haters—an ever-present digital antagonist of sorts. These puzzles serve more as comedic interludes than serious brainteasers; they’re entertaining and varied enough to prevent repetition, but none of them demand deep strategy or long-term planning. That’s not a critique of complexity so much as a reflection of the game’s overall vibe—light, fast, and slightly chaotic. On the technical side, Summon is easy to run and even easier to install. It has modest system requirements, needing only 4 GB of RAM, a mid-tier CPU, and a small 10 GB installation footprint. The optimization is surprisingly decent, with no significant frame drops or bugs in most gameplay sequences. It also includes partial controller support and offers achievements through Steam, along with Steam Workshop integration, which gives it a little more replayability for those who want to explore user-generated content. It’s also available in multiple languages—including English, Russian, German, Polish, Turkish, and Czech—showing a commendable level of accessibility for such a small project. The game's community reception has been overwhelmingly positive. As of 2025, Summon holds a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, with over 90% of its 3,000+ reviews praising its humor, charm, and unconventional structure. While daily active users have dipped to just a few concurrent players, its peak moments following launch showed a tight-knit, enthusiastic audience. This isn’t a game that was built for long-term retention; it’s a bite-sized, self-contained experience that thrives in short bursts and stays memorable because of its bizarre creativity. Its player base seems to understand that, treating it as a kind of cult classic rather than a mainstream must-play. Where the game may falter is in its appeal outside of the niche it serves. Anyone looking for depth—be it narrative, puzzle complexity, or character development—will likely walk away confused or underwhelmed. The plot is more a sequence of ironic detours than a structured arc, and while that’s clearly intentional, it limits the emotional or intellectual engagement that other puzzle or adventure games might offer. Similarly, if a player isn’t already immersed in the cultural references it draws from, much of the humor could fall flat or feel impenetrable. Still, there’s something undeniably charming about how Summon owns its identity. It’s cheap—often under a dollar—and never tries to be more than what it is. That humility, coupled with sharp comedic timing and a creative blend of game mechanics, makes it a small but vibrant example of what indie developers can achieve when they play to their strengths. In the sea of forgettable, low-effort meme games, Summon stands out not because it’s polished or profound, but because it’s genuinely funny, weirdly cohesive, and confidently itself. In the end, Summon is a perfect game for a specific kind of player: someone looking for a quick, surreal, internet-flavored experience that doesn’t demand much but gives back a lot in laughs and memorable moments. It’s not aiming to be a blockbuster, and that’s exactly why it works. If you go in with the right expectations—and a good sense of humor—you'll probably find yourself oddly captivated by this tiny, chaotic puzzle trip through the meme multiverse. Rating: 9/10
