A rare, brilliant and multifaceted gem, meticulously cut. A strategy VN-sim that finally fulfills that childhood fantasy of what it might actually be like to run a country. Not by clicking troops on a map, not via abstracted technocratic construction orders, but with a realistic amount of reading, legislating, box-checking, power-balancing, and an absolutely exhausting amount of bad choices to make. Peppered with some good ones here and there. Unlike with say, movies or books, it is quite rare to stumble upon a game that demands a degree of learning and understanding to properly engage with it from the start. Let alone imparting knowledge to the player via the simple virtue of having played it. However, the developers and scenario writers of Suzerain have a firm grasp on the dynamics of power, how the smaller levers of bureaucracy interact with larger domestic concerns of a country, then global ones. It will teach you, with brutal clarity, how these multifaceted structures of incentive interact, how destructive and tragic they can be. Finally, Suzerain understands that in order for player choice to have meaning, it must take power away from you, not to make you omnipotent, as a lot of these games tend to. Frankly, I have never seen so much meaningful narrative choice in a game, ever. And despite that, the game leaves you feeling constantly powerless, constantly questioning your decisions. It feels as if every good thing you manage to accomplish brings on further negative consequences. Excellent craftmanship on the writing level too. While the game is concerned with creating a realistic large-scale geopolitical scenario, it is absolutely littered with very solid character writing. Despite having over a hundred plot-significant characters, the writers manage to make so many of them feel unique and interesting. It's clear that every one of them has their own interpretation of the events in the world, and your own actions, making choices hit that much harder. The excessive interweaving complexity does have its drawbacks, as consequences for actions made begin to baffle down the line. There are simply too many variables to account for and they sometimes result in illogical-seeming results that one cannot investigate, or make sense of. It wasn't enough to crumble the experience in the end though. I'd say the large middle section of the game is more interesting that the slow beginning, or the chaotic home stretch. Perhaps that's part of the intended experience though. Large-scale decision making ought to have some unintended, disastrous, or even baffling conclusions. As time went on, I found myself more and more frustrated at the factions in the game. Whatever I do, no matter how considered and rational my decision-making, it never seems like enough. There is the shame of promises unfulfilled, or costly mistakes made, contrasted with the blithe and wrong media interpretations, coupled with endless demands from your own cabinet. It made me feel as tired and frustrated as Anton Rayne surely would be.

This "game" does not feel like a game. It's a story that you are apart of. You are not a disembodied ruler looking over a map with stats, you are the president of a downtrodden country, and through every meeting, conversation, and signature the world conforms around what YOU did personally, and you are held accountable for all of it. At the end, no matter how it ends, it feels like you are concluding your story rather than finishing a game. For me that conclusion was bleeding out in my office as my capital crumbled under war. Maybe next time I can do better.

The oligarchs, ultra-nationalists, communists, liberals, conservatives, moderates, imperialists, and feminists all want me to save the economy their way and their way only. What they don't know is that I'm just having fun ruining an economy in a video game to get away from economies being ruined in the real world.

This is a story driven game. Suzerain is historical fiction based several decades ago that is strikingly simple with an elegant depth. You get a map of the region, cities, neighboring countries...all fictional. You are the leader of a nation with access to your cabinet of advisors, politicians, and other business leaders. The game progresses through text conversations, and your decisions on how to respond/manage those interactions. Most of the gaming experience will be through text based dialog trees. The choices you make in those chats will define how your national policies and relationships, both political and personal, play out. You'll make policy choices, sign bills into laws (or veto them), and rewrite constitutions. Go at your own pace. Conversation choices do not have timers. Make yourself some earl grey tea. Hot. Enjoy the background music while you approach the challenge of bringing a nation out of economic or military danger. The story does a fantastic job of making the political navigation feel real and your choices feel impactful. Playing slowly, I've just finished chapter one. I'm eager to watch my choices benefit the country the way I hope, while crossing my fingers that something dreadful won't occur to erase my designed path. This game surprised me in a good way. You are not controlling individual units to attack or defend a city. You are not moving individuals around on the map. You are not clicking each politician's name to initiate a conversation. You don't click to end a turn. The storyline opens, meetings occur, you play your part by deciding how to respond, then you watch (or read the newspapers, rather) how things unfold. The storied approach is refreshingly calm from the perspective of game mechanics. It is nice not to have to remember to talk to every NPC. The conversations come to you. And when you forget a political group name, or business leader's possible motivations, there is a encyclopedia-like Codex that you can reference at any time to read through and jog your memory. You can access this Codex in the middle of a cabinet meeting if you need to. Want to check the known affiliations of a political figure in the middle of a conversation?...go ahead. It's useful to do so, as your choices can lead to political treaties or determine whether you align with a corporation. You'll want to do what you can to gauge whether your choices really are propelling you in the direction you wish your country go. My understanding is that there is replay value to be had. There are multiple endings and DLC to explore. I currently only have the base game. Edited for flavor

I love this game. Probably the best political simulator out there. Only complaint I have is there aren't enough story packs, especially with how good the Rizia DLC is - lol.
