This is the Dark souls of Tennis... prepare to die... after i failed in the 3rd round of my first tournament, I had to take a hard look at my life... as I sat on my computer chair after I lost, I asked myself do I really want this? Do I have what it takes to be a champion? Am I hungry enough? What is my legacy? I sat on my front porch watching the storm clouds, with my head in my hands....tomorrow is a new day I thought...am I prepared to fail on beginner mode again? These are questions one ponders living on the edge of destruction.
For a bit of context, I've been playing tennis on real courts since I was six years old, and I've been playing video games since the Duke Nukem days. Even with that background, Tennis Elbow 4 still makes me work for every point. This is not the tennis game to buy if your first priority is flashy graphics, licensed players, or polished presentation. If that's what you're after, there are other titles that will probably be a better fit. But if you want a game that captures the feel of constructing a point, choosing the right shot, mistiming the ball, and finally hitting that clean winner you've been trying to pull off for the last three games... this is where Tennis Elbow 4 shines. The learning curve is real. It doesn't hold your hand, and it doesn't flatter you. Once the timing clicks, though, every rally becomes rewarding because you've earned it. I mostly play against the AI rather than online, and for that kind of challenge it's been more than worth it. It may not be the prettiest tennis game available, but beneath the graphics is an outstanding tennis simulation. Easy recommendation if gameplay matters more to you than eye candy.
I’ll start off by saying this is hands down the best tennis sim out there. I’ve spent a fair amount of time playing other tennis games, and while many have better graphics or flashier presentations, the gameplay eventually starts to feel narrow and predictable. It’s the complete opposite with TE4. The more you play, the more it opens up. It definitely has a steep learning curve, as you have to learn how to position yourself properly to hit the ball at the right spot, set up your shots for better accuracy, and adapt to different court surfaces, each with different speed, friction, and bounce behavior, all adding another layer of depth to the gameplay. There are so many nuances that I do not see myself ever fully mastering it, and that is exactly how real tennis works. Although it takes dedication to git gud , it’s also surprisingly beginner friendly. You can enable plenty of assists to help you get the hang of things, and there are 6 base levels of difficulty, each containing 10 sublevels. Between the training school, the ball machine, and the warm up sessions, you have everything you need to improve. I’ve spent plenty of time just hitting balls in the warm up mode, and it really shows how satisfying the core gameplay is once everything clicks. The career mode is probably the most in depth I have ever seen, especially with the addition of Tennis Elbow Manager 2, which expands an already great mode even further. You can start as a junior at 14 or turn pro at 18, but working your way up the rankings is no easy task. The game tracks an impressive amount of stats like forehand and backhand power, precision, consistency, topspin rate, volleys, lobs, drop shots, counters, return, passing shots… the list goes on, and you can really feel how all those attributes play a role in every match. As great as the base game is, the mods are what truly complete the experience. There is an in-game mod manager that lets you download content like updated player databases and real stadiums directly from the main menu. It works flawlessly. Tennis Elbow 4 feels like a true labor of love and I strongly recommend it, as it has easily become one of my favorite games of all time.
Just remember that one man made this game! Quite simply, this game is the definition of "Substance over Style". Edit: Certain aspects of visual polish can be achieved thanks to modders if that is what you desire. Genuine tournament feel can be achieved. Furthermore, mods allow for player styles to be implemented to a fantastic level. As for Multiplayer, it is really fun and has a decent core of active players. On average I get a game within 3-5 mins with players across the globe. Under the hood, the physics of this game is the all time greatest. I have a long history with tennis games. I have played most of the Virtua Tennis (VT) games and I have played Topspin (TS) 2/3/4 which are considered the top two franchises. The VT series is the best arcade version for me and the TS series is the best simulation version. I've even grown up with Mario Power Tennis on the GameCube and the more recent Mario Tennis Aces, though I haven't got round to playing the most recent one. The most entertaining tennis games for me belong to Mario and friends. I have also endured EA's Grand Slam Tennis 2 series which was a decent attempt to find a balance between arcade and simulation but it still missed the mark by quite a bit. More recently, I've had the misfortune of supporting Tennis World Tour back in 2018 which in truth was just a quick cash grab with nothing but shallow gameplay. In terms of pure technical gameplay Tennis Elbow is the undisputed King . There is no two ways about it. Not a single game mentioned above can even challenge it in this regard. The tireless and lonesome genius behind Mana Games has refined the physics for over 10 years I believe. The ball and surface physics have an immense level of depth. The degree of top spin that can be applied has deep variation that is impacted by the attribute itself, the surface, and even if side spin is added to the spin. Furthermore, this depth is added to serves, where its not just the standard slice, topspin, and power serve, Tennis Elbow 4 also does Kick serves extremely well and is unique in this regard. The problem typically these days is that the casuals and younger crowd think graphics and presentation is everything. Where this game lacks, is of course in its polish. Therefore, I think many people confuse or fail to appreciate the physics because it doesn't match up to the audio and visual polish that one may expect even though there is not a direct correlation . As an example, the game uses genuine motion graphics for movement and some folks complain it doesn't look realistic . It is simply lacking polish here. Additionally, the menus and music is not pretty and could use a facelift. Nonetheless, it doesn't bother me, nor does it objectively detract from the game. Thank you for a truly fantastic game that reigns supreme above its competitors. It deserves bundles more support and recognition.
Best tennis game maybe ever... Mod support lets you play career mode against current/former real players. Realistic gameplay. Have played the other games with more photo-realistic graphics, but they are borderline unplayable compared to Tennis Elbow 4. Tennis fans deserve a good game and this one delivers.
