This is a pretty genius example of someone teaching you not to try too hard. I think this sort of thing can only work in the medium of videogames, which is the true beauty of this piece of art. The lesson it teaches is that we, as players, continuously push the button no matter what gets in our way because it simply is what we like to do. It's almost funny to read this bad reviews saying "It's so annoying that it kept restarting!!" And yet you kept pressing the button? You only prove the game's point! Game developers may think of ways to dress it up, to make it special, or to reinvent it, without realizing that all gamers want is to push the button. We might be afraid to create because our way of pushing the button isn't "good enough," but gamers want to push the button even when actively discouraged, let alone when set up by someone with a genuine goal in mind. The Corridor is a compact supernova of class and ideals. It is the penultimate form of "if you build it, they will come". It is inspiring and humbling all at once. And yet, it is simply a button at the end of a hallway. Really makes you think.
I played THE CORRIDOR a couple of years back, closer to when it first released, and I did not like it at all. I think at that time I had played some other meta-narrative games that were pretty terrible, and it ended up affecting how I felt about this one. Recently, I’ve been going through some meta-narrative games again and decided to give THE CORRIDOR another go, and I can say I enjoyed it more this time around. Is the game perfect? Far from it. Is it the best meta-narrative game I’ve played? Hell no. THE CORRIDOR is just okay. It does its job and says everything it needs to in around 30 minutes, which is a lot more than I can say for some other meta-narrative games I’ve played. There were some meta-narrative games I’ve played that just drag on and on, trying to hammer their point home, so thankfully, THE CORRIDOR doesn’t do that; it's short, not too heavy-handed on what it's trying to say, and has some decent bits sprinkled in. This dev released another meta-narrative game called It Takes A War last year and I played the demo for it. My feelings about it are pretty much the same for this one, but I’m willing to give it a try some time.
Pro Tip: Play on Invisible rather than Offline, as some people have trouble with achievements when Offline (although as long as your FRIEND LIST is offline rather than Steam itself, you shouldn't have this problem). Anyways, the game took me a bit less than an hour to complete. One run through for fun and a second to grab any missed achievements. Basically, this is one of those "Player and Narrator" games. You'll see a lot of comparisons to Stanley Parable, and one could consider this a Stanley Parable Lite (which is a compliment!). For those who haven't played Stanley Parable, expect a "You vs. The Narrator" type experience, played for laughs. I noticed in the Discussions that the Dev is still fairly active in the discussions board, which is pretty cool! Is there more here than meets the eyes? Is pushing someone's buttons an analogy for something else? Or is this just another one of those meta projects that was pure fun for the dev to see what they could get away with? Who knows! I'm a cheap gamer who always wants to spend less than $1 per hour. This game was on sale for just under a dollar, I played it for just under an hour, so I feel even at my low-budget pricing it was worth it.
