Runs fine on Steam Deck on high setting when set to 30FPS and looks gorgeous. Mind data visualization reminds me of my 3D scanning days. Camera movement is a bit clunky at times when inspecting objects - the animation takes too long until control is enabled again. Also, camera control with right stick could use a sensitivity slider, too slow for my taste the way it is right now. But still enjoying it and the questions that are asked are very relevant regarding new technology in the real world - namely AI.

this game is trippy and fun if you like detective-like games. it reminds me of games like Observer. my only criticism of this game is that the mechanics/systems are a bit tough to get a hold of and aren't explained great. there were more than a few times where i had no clue what to do and even the games 'hints' didn't help. overall a good game about the effect of AI on society.

Visually very creative. Captivating story. Choices matter. Minor sound and gameplay bugs aside, a solid investigation story game. 4/5.

Time for honesty: that was in some ways not as cool, and in other ways cooler, than what I was expecting. It's a little weird to review because in some ways I feel let down from what I thought the experience would be, and in others I was pretty into it. The reason it gets an easy 'recommend' from me is just how beautiful everything was rendered: in 'reality,' you can kinda tell it's a video game (if a video game animated with love), but in the 'Dreamwalker,' in the memories and dreams, it's like... exactly what you'd expect. I think. Maybe. So, yes, recommend. You play as this guy who has developed this method for scanning brains, and you have developed an AI you work with who translates those brain scans into reconstructed scenery that you can move around in virtually. You can view impressions gleaned from those brain scans - memories, dreams, impressions, and more. You can switch seamlessly between the 'objective' - which is supposed to be a strictly 'real' memory - or the 'subjective,' which includes all of the impressions, thoughts, and feelings of the person in the memory. Very cool. Here comes a brief description of the game with special attention given to not provide spoilers (other than what you could maybe learn in the first 15 mins, or from the game description... and anything else I'll just attempt to leave as 'teasers.') A high up figure at one of the world's biggest tech companies has committed suicide - or has she? It's up to you to dig into her memories to find out. Can you find the cause of her death just from recent memories - or will subconscious blocks be in your way, forcing you to delve deep into her distant memories, trying to find the keys to unlock more details? And, since the virtual world of one person's subjective experience will never tell the full story... you'll have to do a little exploring in the real world, as well. As time goes by, more and more things are happening. Tension builds. You begin to make shocking discoveries. How will you handle the things you're learning, the things you're discovering? ...And in a world where AI is becoming ever more powerful... what could all of this - mixing the real with the subjective, the actual with the virtual, the desire for ever increasing mixture between biology and technology - mean? You'll spend a lot of time walking. This isn't Soma where you'll interact with everything including your belly button lint - The Signifier usually has a few key things in each setting that you'll 'look' at or maybe interact with. So a whole lot of the game is walking and looking. That's not to say it's not an extremely interesting and often bizarre setting - just prepare yourself for a lot of poking around. The 'puzzles' are also not terribly difficult. There's a few spots where you might have to look around a while to figure out 'oh, this goes here' or 'oh, I get it, you're supposed to do this thing' but really this game shouldn't absolutely stump you if you're wanting to play with no walkthrough. ...Well, let me add a caveat to that. I do believe there are a few bugs left in this game. There was a time or two where the game OBVIOUSLY was not working correctly, and I had to go back a save or two and try again, to have it work correctly. If you DO get stumped, it's POSSIBLE you've hit a bug. The game is NOT littered with game-breaking bugs everywhere... but I think there's a kink or two left in the hose in there. The voice acting is so so. Sometimes it feels on point, but a lot of the time it feels like people are reading lines. As stated, I loved the graphics and settings. That is a huge reason for the recommend - this game is almost worth it just for the settings alone. A lot of work went into this world, and it shows. The sound effects are pretty good, and the music was - yep, I liked the music. It REALLY, REALLY fit the tone. The story? You know... I liked the story, but I wound up feeling like I had read half a book. I wanted to know more about the main character and about the woman from the tech company. While we get to see several important moments in her life, I feel like I wanted to know more. And even the main character - I feel like I wanted his relationship with his daughter fleshed out a little more. So while the story was very good, I just found myself wanting more, and more detail as well. That's just me, though. Overall, I did have a good time playing. I do not know if I will try to get any of the alternate endings or not - perhaps in the future, but I don't want to right now. Maybe I'll give it a shot later. For now, I'm satisfied with the ending I wound up with. Is it worth full price? Well, that's going to depend. I DON'T think this game would be 'everyone's' cup of tea. I think plenty of people will think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread.. I think some people will find it boring.. and I think plenty of people will find themselves like me, somewhere in the middle. I waited to purchase it until it was on sale, and I'm satisfied with that. Would I be happy had I paid full price? I don't know. Probably. Like I've said, a lot of love went into this weird world. I had a good time in it. So I would probably be ok had I paid full price. Overall fun time, didn't blow my brain out the back of my skull like I expected, but still a fantastic experience. Pretty solid recommend.
