Eternal Threads was a bit slow at first, but I ended up getting extremely invested in the characters and their plot-lines! 43’s whole thing is super intriguing to me, and based off of the ending, I’m hoping you guys come out with a sequel sometime in the future. Really cool game concept, felt super unique in my opinion. The humor was also top-notch. Nothing like good ol’ dry British humor… And excellent music, as well. Bravo!
I wanted to write a review because I feel like this game doesn't have enough reviews for how enjoyable it was! I will try to make my review spoiler free! The game is about exploring a timeline of events in the week prior to a tragedy that takes the lives of 6 people. Your goal is the alter points in the timeline to save them all. The game starts out kind of holding your hand on what to do, but then it lets you basically explore the timeline in any order you like, as is from the beginning or changing it as you go, or you can work backwards, or follow a specific person, whatever feels right to you, there isn't a right or wrong way to do it and I like that. There also isn't any pressure to do things quickly or any time constraints, so you could just leisurely explore the house or try to rush through to get the best ending without fully unlocking every scene. At the end if you are trying to 100% it, some of the scenes can get repetitive as near identical conversations can happen at different times in the timeline, but you can always skip watching them if you want. There are some reviews complaining about the ending and while it could have been more satisfying, I felt the journey was the satisfying part and more than made up for the.... disconcerting ending. Also, the way it ends leaves room for future exploration of the very interesting world building this game establishes. Overall I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes story-driven/mystery/puzzle games, with a touch of sci-fi, especially if on sale. You could probably 100% the game in about 10 hours, so it would have been cool for it to be longer, however honestly if the tragedy story was much longer it probably would have gotten more repetitive and ended up getting boring.
Good. For the most part. I feel like it's worth mentioning that there is basically no gameplay here at all. It's more like an interactive film. In fact, your first 3-4 hours essentially just involve walking around the house and playing through the story to its conclusion. From there, you are free to replay events and change what happens for the six main characters. This was... okay. The way you do this is through the time map, and this may genuinely be one of the worst user interfaces I have ever seen in any game. It is impossible to navigate. More annoyingly, there is no option to save states, so if you start making changes, it can be difficult to get back to a better solution you had previously. I eventually got the best ending, but my last hour was not enjoyable purely because of the horrendous time map. It turned what should have been an interesting process of experimenting with different outcomes into a frustrating exercise in trying to work out what the hell I had changed. The voice acting is a mixed bag. At times I thought it was atrocious, while at others it was genuinely great. Thankfully, the quality of the writing makes up for it. The story is cohesive, well structured, and does a good job of tying everything together. Overall, it's a decent interactive story, worth the time if you enjoy these types of games.
Eternal Threads is a scifi down to earth kitchen sink drama, with both walking sim and puzzle game elements. Rather a mouthful for a game that’s not exactly massive. The premise is very scifi. There’s been some sort of time travel related accident in the future which cascades radiation back through time, causing corruption in the timeline. Agents are sent back to correct this while making as few direct changes as possible. The game does not elaborate deeply on the nature of the accident really, nor the group you work for. It is at the beginning seemingly there as a framing device to set up why you are in a burnt out house using a device to manipulate past events. As the story develops the scifi aspects do come back into play in an intriguing way, which I was pleased to see, but the game does end on a cliff hanger. The devs still seem to be going, but in typical modern game development timescales, it’s 4 years later with no sequel as of yet, which is frustrating. The main meat of the game is the human drama though, 6 housemates living in 2015 Northern England going through various dramas, with your job being to alter events via the decisions they made in the week leading up to it. The main objective is to save their lives, and ideally to get an optimal outcome for their personal problems as well. The human drama is pretty well done, it’s a little soap operaish that every single one of the characters has some sort of drama or problem that they need resolving, but fortunately mostly the characters behave like grown-ups and are decently written so it’s not irritating to deal with. Indeed with the default story before you start altering things, while everyone has their problems and they aren’t dealt with, there isn’t really any dramatic confrontations, as in real life everyone sort of just plods on with things. It’s only when you start tinkering with things do dramatic arguments and reveals start, and amusingly that can lead to some histrionic meltdowns. Finding the right choices does lead everyone to deal with their problems like mature adults, however, and this aspect of the story is resolved fully by the end of the game. The atmosphere is on point, with both the graphics and sound working well. I think for quite a low budget game the character models aren’t that detailed, but because the characters are all presented in a slightly grainy format through your time visualiser it hides any imperfections in the character models. The burnt out house itself is suitably creepy, and for what is a limited space for a game, literally a single house and garden, there’s good use of that space, but without falling into horror cliches. The voice acting is pretty much excellent. The game ran well for me as well, though it’s not that surprising considering the limited scale. Gameplay wise this is where the game is at it’s most simple. You wander around the house, using your visualiser to show scenes from the housemates. At points you have the choice to change decisions made, which then unlocks different scenes and outcomes. Some areas of the house are locked off to start with, so discovering different scenes to identify where keys are is crucial to uncover more of the story. There are also various notes and voice messages around the house that adds more context. I chose to play out the story as it was at first to understand the context, it does mean that in this form the first few hours are essentially a walking simulator, but once you get into the decisions it’s interesting seeing how they interact and change things. This aspect is puzzle like, though not particularly complex. You do have access to a timeline of scenes, and towards the end of the game this is very useful to quickly change events via this to rapidly access new scenes or see new outcomes, however I did find the interface for this quite clunky. Overall this is an interesting little game. I’m not sure I would have been so enthused had I bought it full price, but when on sale it goes pretty low, and I got it for £3.19 last year. If you enjoy story based games it’s well worth a punt for 7 or 8 hours of decent story and atmosphere.
We are no longer in Kansas Toto Tom Cruise has lost his wingman, he will step through the wardrobe, where there is no lion and the only witch is, well her name is Miranda. Oh, and there is plenty of ice-cream and TV. This game is more than a choices-matter, it's an exploration deep into the lives of 6 housemates, and their movie-buff companion Ian. Littered with movie references, the housemates banter hides the very deep adult topics, from alcoholism, gambling and illegal drugs, to guilt, pregnancy, and mental illnesses. Even growing old and the ultimate goodbye comes up. You have now been warned this game is a roller coaster. There is even an artist with a real film camera in the house, which reminded me strongly of Life Is Strange. Although the effect is never overdone, this game does contain flashing images. That's because, as the game description says, you will be flashing back and forth through time, with each change you make to the timeline resulting in a flashback, literally. Anyway, I found the controls for the timeline and game interactions were well thought out and after a while very intuitive. Initially the game gives you on-screen hints as to what buttons to press and where to go, but soon you memorise the layout of the map and of the controls and you are breezing along. For example the game does have a "run" key, and you will be using that as well as tactical choices to mean you do not have to traverse the map very much anyway. About half way though the game it will feel like the game could have been split into 2 or 3 games, because there is just so much going on. Worth trying to finish the game in one sitting if you can. And that all together builds realism because underlying it all are very real lives, some more boring than others, but ultimately every player will find more than one housemate to not only identify with but also to want to save first. And that's the frustration, because it is hard to save them all. And because you will have started to believe that the game is in fact true-to-life after a while. You will want to fit this game into your own understanding of the world. The game features 2 medics, and I think that hints at how gritty the story gets. I loved the realism and very current-events nature of this game which although all about time travel, becomes very much about 6 housemates. Get it now Before the sale ends.
