The Void is a brutally difficult arthouse survival dating sim with gardening. And trust me, if that description makes it sound like a very unique game, it's because it is. Game mechanics are so unusual that learning them makes you feel like a child learning to walk, but that's clearly a deliberate choice by the devs to make you feel alienated. The art direction and character design are superb and left me awestruck from start to finish. However, the best and most important aspect of The Void is the story, which is among the most profound and philosophical you can find in gaming. I also love how the story is told through the limited perspective of several different characters, who are often wrong about stuff, and sometimes straight up lie and try to manipulate you. It's up to the player to decide who to trust and what meaning to associate with the weird events of the game.

If you ever wanted something that gave you the feel of the Pathologic games in an eerily beautiful fantasy dreamscape, then The Void is the game for you. One of my friends refers to it as 'That collapsing afterlife goddess dating sim game' and I can't really deny it. For me the biggest draw is the sense of lonely beauty and decaying grandeur I feel as I play. It's very visceral. Yes it is kind of dated by now for some though I feel the aesthetic has a timeless sense that still draws me back all these years later.

It's eerie. It's haunting. It's atmospheric. It's... confusing as hell. And why wouldn't it be? You're dropped into some weird, nether realm between Life and Death and given no instructions as to what to do except from some otherworldly, beautiful women who never quite seem trustworthy and give advice which is often conflicting. It's mostly a resource management game at its core, with a lot of walking simulator elements. The "combat", such as it is, is sparse, janky, and costly - the same resources that you spend in combat are the ones sustaining your half-life in this Void between worlds, and how you interact with the Void. That said, the combat somehow doesn't detract from the game itself. The game is beautiful despite the overwhelming use of greys. It's alien and bizarre and gripping and... Look, just play the game. It won't be for everyone - it's somewhat slow paced, and every decision must be taken with care. You'll probably screw up at some point and either have to restart from the beginning or revert to an earlier save, because you won't realize the outcome of your actions until 3 or 4 hours later. That can be extremely frustrating, I know. However, you'll probably go back, just because of how utterly unique the art and theme of the game is. I've beaten the game three times. There is no significant change in repeat playthroughs, and even the endings (there are several) vary only slightly, but there is just something so magical about the game that it keeps drawing me back in. Truly, a masterpiece, a hidden gem of gaming that is mostly overlooked. It's an artwork given life and... Color, and you get to be a piece of that art.

Let me just say this. It is pretty unique. Looking at it from afar, it seems pretty rough. I think you have to be in the right state of mind to aprreciate it. Nonetheless it entertained me very much, for it differs from basically every other game I played. Though it is quite old and mostly barren, the contrast of colour to the cold void is something very appealing to look at. So I do recommend it, but you gotta be patient with it, and be ready to take some time to get to know it. Also it is mostly a management game. Important notice: the donor glyph, the first glyph in the game, the recognition is flawed and not exactly how the game tells you, but if you know the "real way" to draw it, you can reliably use it. Trick is to start on the top right and make this first arm quite a bit longer than the hight of the circle.
