April 2025
I LOVE THIS GAME!!! Now, this might not be surprising as I'm a sucker for witches and also have over 550 hours played on Stardew Valley, so I'm probably the very essence of the target audience. Nevertheless, I hesitated for a while before aquiring this game because the reviews are, let's say, not that awesome. But I had to know for myself. Here's what I found out: Most of the negative reviews criticise the game mechanics which are actually the same exact thing as in Stardew Valley (i.e. crops withering when seasons change etc.). But unlike Stardew Valley, which can be straight up punishing when you make a mistake, Witch of Fern Island gives you much more leeway to figure things out. For example, most of the crops can be grown in multiple seasons, and after you build a greenhouse, you're free to grow anything you want at any time. You are also not penalised for dying, you don't have to water your crops every goddamn day, and all crafts and upgrades cost much less resources than in SDV, so this game is not nearly as grind-heavy as you would expect. That being said, this game is certainly not without issues. There's a good amount of technical issues and bugs which make the game look unpolished, but luckily I haven't encountered any game-breaking bugs. Also, there could have been more content - the main quest line is pretty short and so are the side quests, which is a shame because I enjoyed the story, the lore and the characters quite a lot. Also, for example, the cat possession was a great opportunity to include some fun minigames (maybe jumping puzzles or catching small animals while being a cat?), but instead it's only used to access loot bags. Also, I personally would have loved a bit of action/combat (similar to the mines in SDV) - you could craft magical wands with different effects using the wood, minerals, herbs and essences you gather in the game. But I understand if the game designers wanted to keep the game combat free and that's perfectly fine. But these few points aside, I do actually love this game for many reasons. First of all, it looks beautiful. The graphics, the art style, it's all wonderful to look at, bright, colorful and full of life. The game world feels lively and organic and ready to be explored. The mansion and farm is nice and cozy and you can decorate it to your heart's content, giving you the feeling that what you've built here is truly "yours". Secondly, the lore, the story and the characters are very well written, and I loved unearthing the pieces of the ancient mystery, learning more about Fern Island's history and cultures and its inhabitants. Last but not least, I really do enjoy the witchy stuff - brewing potions, crafting magical amulets, performing rituals, flying on broomstick, collecting an ensemble of witchy dresses and pointy hats - it's all very cute, whimsical and heartwarming, a perfect respite from the craziness of the real life. Overall, The Witch of Fern Island is the calm, cute, relaxing, farming & house decorating game I always wanted SDV to be, with a witchy bonus :-) Thank you!!!

OK, I hesitated buying this game based on the reviews, and decided to wait until it went on sale. I feel that was a good choice. That being said... I love this game. Is it perfect? No. Does it have bugs? Yes. Can it be confusing sometimes, yes. Here's why I love it though: Most games these days take your hand and lead you through quests, tutorials, or tool-tips. This game is very light to non-existent on much of that save for a few small nudges. But I like this. This game very much rewards exploration, curiosity, and experimenting. It doesn't hold your hand, and this can be off-putting for some, but I find it refreshing. I have to actually think logically to realize the solution to some issues. Many of the "main quests" you will run into have ingredients you don't know where to find after exploring immediately around the house. Unlike some games where you get a solid start nearby first, you are encouraged to explore, wander, make map notes, come back to spots you mark later. I still have items on my list to find that require different seasons, or further exploration. This is a do-it-at-your-own-pace cozy game that has lots of things to do, but you can fulfill them at any point. That being said, there are a few things I learned with my first game which had me restarting to go from the beginning again for a better experience. Map notes are a must have. Buy these first before anything else. Get producing amulets early, sell stuff you don't need like potions. Then, explore lots and early. Yes it's a bit annoying to not be able to teleport, but you'll have tons of items to collect which will make life easier as you continue.

I recommend this game with a "but," and that "but" is that while I recommend this game, it's better to get it when it's on sale for reasons I will list later. Things I love about the game; - It's a weekly gift system, I enjoy that cause I'm terrible at giving gifts every day. - They display when the friendship level goes up, for my visual havin' self that's great. - You can form deeper bonds beyond just a regular town NPC and MC, the people have depth and scars, they have things they don't want people to know. Everything isn't always sunshine and I love that realism. - Gathering items multiple times has a reward system that can benefit you. - Almost every single item in the game has some use in some way. (My pack rat is vibrating.) - Fortune telling, weather spells, rituals to help with your farm, tailsmens to help in various areas. Ok now, Things I don't love; - The freaking bugnet; Seriously this thing is FRUSTRATING. If I had to describe it without colorful words; "You spin me right round nightmare mode except there's nothing fun about it." - I swing up, miss, I swing down, miss, I swing as they're leaving, miss, I swing as they come towards me, miss!!!!!!!! Thankfully I haven't died from the bites from the bugs but man, please fix it or make the area bigger. Anything please. - The fact that we can't farm with the Dree and the Hares is offensive and no one can change my mind. Dree can be like cows, yes they're dumb, but they're OUR dumb bois. As for the hares, I just really like bunnies. - I'm upset that our familiar is BARELY around. A familiar is another extension of the witch, but we barely see them around the house. - There's glitches that while they aren't game breaking, they are noticeable. / The clothes don't seem like they were given weights with the idea of her running in mind. Only standing idle. / The scorpions and the cuflows need their animations worked on BADLY. I don't own skating Cuflows, and scorpions need to move all their legs, not just skate across the dessert. - There's not a whole lot of furniture that makes your home feel witchy. The bed choices in particular. If you've made it this far into my review thank you. For those who skimmed the TL;DR version: Get the game but wait till it's on sale.

I love witchy games and this is one of my all time favorites! This game has my two favorite things: wandering around a pretty world and collecting things. So if that's what you enjoy, I definitely recommend this game! That being said, there are some things that could use improvement in the game. It is very hard to know where you are supposed to go and what to do, though they are at least adding in quest area highlights in a new update. Still, it is frustrating to get a quest and spend hours upon hours trying to find the items only to realize the items needed won't be available for three more seasons and now you've wasted countless in game days trying to complete one quest and ended up missing the window to complete other ones. In my first game I spend the first two months trying to get my broom only to realize it would be impossible until nearly the end of the year, and then I ended up missing out on another quest that required plants that only grew in the first two months (I was also searching for them, but since I didn't have even a vague location, I wasn't able to find them in time). Half of those issues will be solved in the new update, but it would be nice if the game let you know approximate timelines for some of the bigger quests. I still have no idea what happens if you make it to the end of the year and you haven't accomplished the tasks for your witch test: do you fail if you don't get above a certain grade? They don't give any timelines, so I have no idea if I should be actively trying to accomplish as much as I can in a day, or if I have the freedom to just roam and collect. Also, I wish there was a way to see the names of the items needed for recipes and not just pictures. A lot of the plants look similar, and you have absolutely no information on them unless you have already collected them which is a bit annoying. Hopefully in the update you can make a specific plant a quest and it will give you at least a hint of where/when to find it. Even a little 'this item cannot be located at this time' message would helpful! Overall, I still really like this game and would love to see more witchy games like it!

I absolutely love this game. There is so much to do. So many places to explore and so many secrets to find. Plus, some puzzles to solve but they're not too hard. The map is huge with lots of places to explore. The grind is fun because you often have to explore a bit to find what you need and while doing so you find new places and new secrets etc. And there are 6 seasons and they have new things to find with the change of seasons. I play on pc with a good graphics card so the graphics are great and there is no lag. When crafting or creating potions the items needed are pulled from your storage chests automatically which I find a big plus! There is no building new buildings (except for the greenhouses) but your house is huge (once you are able to open it all up) and there is a good amount of furnishings to fix it how you like. There is a written tutorial with lots of information within your journal you can refer to when needed. Some things you have to figure out but that's half the fun! There aren't many dangers except spiders and tarantulas that you have to look out for but they're pretty easy to kill and you need their venom. I have enough anxiety in my life and hate games that you are constantly having to worry about being attacked. I don't post reviews often but I am enjoying this game so much that I had to recommend it.
