Dec. 2025
THOTH is a strikingly, unapologetically minimalist game. Its visuals are abstract, clean, yet surreal in their colouring; its soundtrack is unearthly, ominous dark ambient; it contains no semblance of story, setting, instructions on how to play, or any words at all really; its gameplay is a relatively threadbare iteration on its chosen genre, but one that's turned on its head by a single clever twist. The game is a top-down twin stick shooter in which every level is an arena no bigger than your screen populated by relatively small numbers of simple enemies. You shoot a sort of projectile machine gun at them to whittle their health down; once you've done that to every enemy the level is won and you move on to the next, but if you ever let any of them touch you, you die. So far this could describe any of hundreds of games, and in many ways it feels and plays like a horde survival game reduced to a micro scale: small arena, few enemies (though sometimes large in size) and the same struggle for space. The twist comes from the fact that in this game enemies do not really "die". When their health is depleted they continue to move or chase you exactly as before, only your bullets now pass through them, but they remain every bit as dangerous otherwise. It's such a simple mechanic with serious consequences on how levels actually play out, forcing you to rethink your approach to movement and combat, because unlike most games you are no longer neutralising threats and gaining breathing room for yourself with each kill. Instead tension and danger remain constant throughout any given level, from start to finish. Speaking of which, the levels themselves are fairly quick as well as varied. They benefit from the gradual introduction of various mechanics, enemy types, environmental quasi-puzzles and even a few bosses, making for a game that never grows stale, while also standing out as a fresh experience. THOTH is really cool. It's elegant in its minimalism, well thought out, and intuitive in its abstraction even as it never explicitly teaches you any of its mechanics but trusts you to figure it all out for yourself...

A twin-stick shooter with the immaculate sound design and manageable difficulty at first that gets tougher to master and leaves less room for error as one discovers further modes after the main campaign, and the achievements. In the classic style of Jeppe Carlsen's 140, it features the inverted mode, and IF you have played 140 and are familiar with the sheer challenge that comes with the aforementioned mode, you can try to project that onto THOTH and get somewhat of an idea as to how difficult it can get. All in all, a fantastic minimalist experience.

It’s minimalist design at its best in gameplay, visuals, and sound. And as a fan of concrete and experimental electronic music, I love how well those sound elements fit with such a universal game experience.

A great little arcade-y game you can pick up for a few minutes at a time. I'm only around half way through, but I've enjoyed it enough to go ahead and write and review. Left stick moves your dot, right stick fires bullets in the direction aimed, but while firing, your speed is significantly reduced, so you can't just fire all the time. It becomes a balancing act of firing and then getting away, etc. The enemies behave in some interesting ways, and I find myself saying "Oh, cool idea" very often. The game gets difficult pretty quickly, but every 4th stage is a checkpoint, so there's always a manageable goal to be working toward. And it never feels very bad to revert to your checkpoint. This is just a great, simple, fun experience all around.
