8/10 Such a cool idea that has a lot of room for improvement. Hopefully we get a game that does improve upon this concept one day.

really fun game! it bugs me how easy of a VR port this would be, though - all the UI is already 3D, like it's right there! just drop in an XRcamera3D!!

Time Rifters, developed by Proton Studio Inc, is one of those rare indie shooters built around a single clever idea and confident enough to let that idea drive the entire experience. Rather than teaming you with AI companions or online players, the game turns your past performances into your future squadmates. You enter a combat arena, fight alone, and inevitably fail to destroy every target before time runs out. Then the timeline resets, you re-enter the same space, and the ghost of your previous run continues firing alongside you. After repeating this process several times, you’ve built a four-person strike team composed entirely of earlier versions of yourself. It’s an elegantly simple concept, but the consequences are profound—it transforms the traditionally solitary rhythm of a single-player shooter into something strategic, cooperative, and surprisingly introspective. The arenas themselves are compact but thoughtfully arranged, essentially functioning as score-driven combat puzzles. Most enemies don’t attack—they exist to be destroyed efficiently. The challenge comes not from survival, but from optimization. Which weapon should your first run invest in? Should you sweep the outer perimeter before focusing on high-value targets? Will your future selves benefit from a setup shot made two resets earlier? Time Rifters rewards players who think several steps ahead, treating each loop like a chess move. The first life often feels exploratory, learning spawn layouts and vulnerabilities, while the final loop becomes a synchronized ballet of firepower, where each ghost-run contributes to a carefully choreographed takedown. That feeling—watching your former selves perfectly execute a plan you’ve spent minutes refining—remains uniquely satisfying. Weapon customization supports this layered strategy without overwhelming it. Each gun offers distinct strengths—scattershot cannons for crowd clearing, precision rifles for weak points, plasma for sustained streams, rockets for burst destruction—and each can be upgraded mid-run. Because every life uses its own loadout, players effectively assemble a multi-role team, with each past self specializing in a particular task. Time Rifters doesn’t drown the player in unnecessary stats or complicated skill trees; instead, it asks them to understand cause and effect. The result is an accessible system with surprising depth, especially for those who enjoy min-maxing or experimenting with builds. Visually, the game embraces a clean, minimalist arena aesthetic built from bright colors, geometric shapes, and glowing voxel enemies. The style isn't flashy, but it makes every battlefield readable and every target immediately identifiable—crucial in a game where seconds matter. The soundtrack leans into electronic rhythms that match the looping, time-bending structure, pushing the action forward without overwhelming it. Everything about Time Rifters’ presentation feels tuned toward clarity and momentum, ensuring focus remains on tactical execution rather than sensory overload. Despite its strengths, the game’s limitations stem from its narrow focus. Time Rifters is not a sprawling campaign shooter, and players expecting narrative, world-building, character progression, or boss encounters may feel underwhelmed. Its 15 arenas offer several hours of experimentation, but once you’ve mastered their layouts and optimized your strategies, the experience naturally winds down. This isn’t a flaw in design—Time Rifters feels built for short but intense bursts of play rather than lengthy marathons—but it does mean longevity depends on how much you enjoy replaying for higher scores or perfect runs. Its pacing can also feel unusual for players accustomed to shooters built around adrenaline and improvisation. Time Rifters encourages planning rather than spontaneity, deliberation rather than panic. It’s possible for new players to misunderstand the core appeal, treating the game like a standard arena shooter and missing the strategic dimension that makes it shine. But once that mental shift occurs, the game opens up into something much richer than its simple structure suggests. What ultimately makes Time Rifters memorable is how personal it feels. Success is not granted through AI assistance or matchmaking luck—it’s earned by collaborating with your earlier decisions, strengths, and mistakes. Your ghosts don’t just help you win; they remind you that every run has value, even failures, because each contributes to the final outcome. In a genre built on forward motion, Time Rifters encourages players to look back—literally—and learn from themselves. For fans of arcade shooters, clever mechanics, and score-based challenges, Time Rifters is an inventive, polished, and deeply satisfying experience. It’s short, focused, and proudly niche, delivering exactly what it promises without unnecessary padding. Those seeking narrative-driven campaigns or extensive content may move on quickly, but players who love mastering systems, refining strategies, and witnessing ideas pay off across timelines will find a standout gem. It’s a game built on the simple thrill of self-improvement—replayed, refracted, and made tangible through time. Rating: 8/10

Ever since my childhood self saw this game many years ago on youtube I was fascinated with its concept and loved it. And after finally getting it I am certainly satisfied, it is so much fun. It might be a bit old but it still holds up well I think. This game deserves more love and getting 100% achievements was really fun.
