This is a good and fun game if you already like Toejam and Earl, but i'm not so sure of the typical indie rogue-lite players liking this. Personally I don't like roguelike/rogue-lite games, but this is one of the few exceptions. This steam version is overly balanced with the unlockable hats so much so you may not use them much on low difficulties and you likely wont get them at all on the Hard, Extreme and Endless modes. The developers have comments on Steam claiming the game is easy and it isn't, I've beaten Extreme trust me it isn't easy. You could find yourself being forced to lose a life to a truck on the later levels of the easier difficulties, it's pretty much guaranteed on harder difficulties. On hard you may play Ring around the Rosy to avoid enemies while shaking trees or entering elevators in the early game, the enemies are entirely too fast and powerful on Extreme and good RNG items/enemy placement is necessary to finish the run. Multiplayer seems pretty broken on Steam and Xbox, but some say it's better on Switch....I'm skeptical but I haven't played that port yet to challenge the claims. This is a good and fun game, but it's an overly balanced port.
As an animator of hybrid 2D and 3D art, Toejam and Earl satisfies that itch for light hearted humor and adventure. Play it with friends or alone. The devs did a great job capturing the spirit of the original, while updating the gameplay and visuals to satisfy today's gaming. An inspiration and a loyal addition to the series!
