I decided to write a review for this, as it was my best experience while playing a game ever, and to me it feels really unfair that ToHeart is so unpopular (at least in our region, that is). I mean that because I see a lot of romance anime popping off absurdly (I don't really watch any, but I read some manga here and there), and from what I've seen, none of them come close to what ToHeart is. I'm not really a guy to play games like this, but nowadays I'm just glad I made an exception and gave ToHeart a try. This is my first time playing a game of this genre and I genuinely don't want any other ones like this, but that's just because this game has touched me in a way that made it irreplaceable. I saw a lot of people complaining about not having an auto skip option during dialogues, but what they don't know is that you can literally scroll down using your mouse and it advances super fast (you're welcome). Sometimes people complain so much that I wonder if they can appreciate things that are actually good. Keep that in mind when you read others' reviews. At first, I had no idea this was a remastered version of a game from 1997. This game single-handedly made me obsessed with the series, and I already know I'll love both anime adaptations (1999 and 2004), just because I already love the characters. I finished Akari's route and I have about 26 hours of playtime. When I first tried the game for a few hours, I wanted to do all the routes for all achievements (mostly Akari's, Lemmy's, Hoshina's and Aoi's), but after finishing Akari's, it felt like any others would've been unfair. That's how much I enjoyed building my story with her (Maybe I'll still try the other routes someday, but I know that day won't be today, and definitely not tomorrow). I'll use the last few lines of this review to point out that Akari is the best girl ever 🙏 She turned out to be my favorite character of all time. There's something about the way she's so calm and kind. Also, considering that her bear obsession came from Yuki, and she kept the teddy he gave her when they were kids, if Yuki had chosen anybody else, this would've been so unfair it would make me sick. 10/10 ToHeart ❤️‍🩹 10/10 Akari Kamigishi ❤️‍🩹

It's a fun and simple visual novel, with comedy and romance. Multiple routes with many colourful and interesting characters, but the everyday scenes are much longer than the romance scenes. It's not going to change your life or anything. It's fun for anyone who likes "cute girls do cute things". Best girl is Multi. There are issues: - It uses too much GPU and CPU for a 3D game that looks relatively simple. My laptop is a RTX 4080 with a 14th gen Intel i9. It'll run the CyberPunk performance loop at an average 89 fps at 2560x1440 with everything maxed out. Yet it struggles running this game. While you have an option to change the resolution, I changed from 4k to 1080p, and I couldn't discern any visual difference and it seems to be using the same graphics resources. So you're force either manually change the monitor to lower resolutions to run or have a powerful computer to run it. - To keep reading the stories from different characters, you need to start from the beginning and skip the parts you read before. To skip you can hold the ctrl key or press the shift key. It takes a very long time to skip and with the performance issues mentioned, it's even slower than you would think. It really needs a skip whole scene, something I've seen in other visual novels before but never used them because normally it's a lot faster. - Sometimes it lets "you", the main character Hiroyuki, to run around the school until you get the next scene, however you can't do anything besides walking. I don't see the point of it, you can see everything while reading the novel anyway. - Minor quibble, but it doesn't include a mini game that came with one the versions of the game. I saw it on youtube and it's a side scrolling airplane shooting game, but you're a witch. I probably wouldn't played it.

FWMC brought me here. I enjoyed Akari's story. Translations are generally fine, but could improve in places. For example, English uses freshman/junior/senior but in Japanese it's just kouhai/senpai so the translation feels a bit off at times. Like when Hiroyuki calls someone senpai it's translated as junior... but then in his 2nd year when referring to himself as a 2nd year it's also junior. I get it, but it just feels weird. They could also maybe drop some useless text from the original. I never played the original VN but I'm sure the text is there because of static CGs. But in the remake you have animated 3D models. No need to explain something so simple as a character is bowing when we can see it ourselves. Finally, why make the player control Hiroyuki just to move from one end of the corridor to the next? We can't interact with any of the NPCs at all. We can just move to the end and either trigger the next scene or talk to the one girl at the end. Thankfully, these are short and not very frequent. Overall, I do like the game and hope to return to experience other girls' stories.

What do you mean "heartful love comedy" ?! I cried my eyes out sometimes! This VN is an old classic of the dating simulators. There's multiple anime adaptations, the first one released in 1999, the second in 2004... I watched it like 1-2 decades ago so I already knew the characters before playing the game. I hope they'll make the sequel game too someday! Honestly I bought it day one because it's a good classic and under 20€ it's really a good deal for it! (especially with the prices on the visual novel market in general lol). The translation is kinda meh sometimes and they didn't translate the radio emissions for some reasons ??? so you'll be obligated to skip those if you don't understand japanese though. Also another problem : the graphics setting does not work for me when launching the game, so basically everytime I play I go into Settings -> System and press "Enter" on the "Graphics Mode" to actually have better graphics settings. Route Guide and Support Decision There's two assistance modes in this game : "Route Guide" and "Decision Support". Decision support will show you which character will gain affection for every choice you do by showing a picture of said character for any choice. Route guide will make a clear path to get to the ONE character you chose before starting the game, and you'll need to choose every heart everytime or it'll cancel the route guide if you choose something else. If you're doing the achievements you need to do one run without any guide / support so I would advise to make your first route without using any of those features to unlock it (though you can "cheat" this achievement and just deactivate the decision support before doing an ending...). There's also two achievements if you don't choose a girl in the end too so be aware of it. Beside that, just do every route and you're good Personnaly I'm using the decision support to complete the remaining endings, but sometimes even if there's a chibi, if ANOTHER chibi is on the romance choice you'll don't get the good one (I failed Akari route the first time tbh lol probably because you can sometimes see her within others events and she likes when you take care of others instead of herself, and also for example in the 2nd year you have her chibi on the first choice but the heart is actually on the third if you follow her route! if you don't follow her route it'll be Tomoko Hoshina chibi with the decisions support). Also you need to do multiple events with others characters for Akari and that's why I missed it. For example after 2-3 events with Hoshino she will ask you if you date Akari and you can deny it or not. Same with Lemmy... and basically all the girls. To romance Akari you need to hang out with every girl and when they ask you about your relationship with Akari just say you're dating. Thus probably why I failed Akari since I missed those events... So if the character you want to romance isn't on the "map" when you can choose what to do, going home immediately can actually be a burden for a route. IDK if Akari is the hardest romance to get because she's the cover girl or the childhood friend (or both). But yeah, you need to befriend more or less all the girls and reject them to go out with Akari, no wonder I failed it the first time aha... If you get the two achievements for the "alone" endings without using the guides and you're not sure about doing it right, take a route guide. Honestly the loadings are so long if you're doing the 10 routes from the start it will be borinnnng so you don't want to mess up too much either. Try two times with 0 or only the support decisions, then if you already got the two achievements for the normal (alone) ending take a route guide. Forget route guide, do manual saves (at least for 2nd years characters) Big negative for this VN is that you need to press a button to skip dialogues, but it's not working when the hour / day changes /!\. So you cannot skip a LOT of loadings screen multiple times a day. If you're aiming for characters appearing in the second year (Multi, Kotone and Aoi) I would advise instead to make a manual save when the second year at school begin (when you meet the girl with light purple hair) so you won't need to skip all of the first year to go to these late game characters. Those characters have shorter routes and are kinda obvious to do compared to early challengers (for 1st years characters you need to hang out with others characters to unlock scenes where you must choose which girl you prefer. At the contrary, it may be best to take the route guides for first years characters and for hidden routes. Hidden routes There's two "hidden" characters routes you'll unlock by doing others routes. To unlock them you'll need to do Akari route for the first one and Serika and Aoi routes for the second. So in the end you have like, 10-13 routes to do I think ? there's two additional content in the dlc (don't know if it adds two endings), and obviously the basic "no girls" route. Bonus Theres a "memories" feature that will list and let you replay all the events with a character after finishing their routes, really nice if you want to replay a specific event or rewatch the ending.

Let's begin with some pros and cons - The scenario remains the same as it was in 1999 when the PS1 edition was released. Characters mention video tapes, barely recognize the word "Internet," don't have portable phones. All of this makes seeing modern TVs and laptops on backgrounds pretty weird. It creates a stylistic mismatch - Free movement parts are very short and don't add anything to experience. You can't interact with environment, you can't talk with random students, there is literally nothing to do - PC port is pretty awkward and had some pretty awful bugs before the first patch. You can clearly see that this remake was designed for Nintendo Switch overall - You can't fast forward scene transitions which is somewhat annoying when a lot of scenes are basically 5 lines long. Meaning, you spend more time watching a date changing than actually reading. It's okay during the first playthrough, but this game has 10+ routes and require you to skip quite a lot, you know + The protagonist is fully voiced. Personally, I find this a big advantage of this edition as Hiroyuki's VA adds a lot to the overall impression + Some routes actually have one or two 2D CG + Some nice QoL features. You can switch between legacy and modern VA for each character separately. The guide function saves you time and removes the need to look up a fan guide, and you can turn it off if you don't like it Some notable routes: — Kurusugawa Serika I didn't expect it at first, but her route ended up being one of my favorites with ease. Serika is a quiet girl, so you are going to hear like 10 words from her mouth across the whole story, which makes their interactions with the protagonist somewhat amusing. She's also into occult stuff, so expect some events related to the subject which I personally enjoyed for a change of pace. The confession scene was especially creative in my opinion — Kurusugawa Ayaka One of the two locked routes. While ToHeart doesn't have a true route or any kind of multiple route mystery, the game still keeps two heroines hidden until you finish some other routes. Ayaka is a polar opposite of Serika and has a mischievous personality, so it makes conversations playful and lively. Unfortunately, you have to finish Aoi's route as one of the conditions to unlock Ayaka, and I didn't enjoy her route that much. At best, it was just... okay? You can actually consider Ayaka's route a better version of Aoi's since they're both focused on martial arts but Ayaka's route approaches the topic in a more fun way — Multi Multi is stunningly sweet. No wonder she became so widely popular. Her route is very short and its drama is pretty predictable for a story about an android, but Multi's personality makes it worth the time. I definitely prefer this type of cheerful robot girls over emotionless ones — Kamigishi Akari The cover girl of ToHeart and the protagonist's childhood friend (childhood friend as a central heroine? the times when they were still winning, huh). Akari is cute, and the path of understanding their "more than friends, less than lovers" relationship is heart-warming, BUT be ready for the most infuriating drama in the entire game — Himekawa Kotone Notable for having straightforward supernatural elements with Kotone struggling to deal with them. Her personality and the story itself don't offer anything special, but still an interesting route for a change of pace — Satou Masashi The original game had a very short friendship ending with your bro Masashi if you fail to enter any other route, and the DLC added a proper route for him, so you might be interested to know what it looks like. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer anything outstanding. Don't get me wrong, it's a sweet story about friendship, but that's about it. The route itself is very short, I'd say similar to Multi's route. Still, it's nice to see a route for a male character once in a while
