I saw Total Annihilation in the 1990's on a video game preview/review show, which was the fashion at the time. I was enthralled by the blatant marketing, I bought a copy, and I did not regret it. Well... not for more than a few angry seconds at a time. Bloody amazing RTS, with just the right amount of hair-ripping frustration and "OH, COME ON!!!" Picked it up again on Steam, and it's just as I remembered: the computer ignores fog of war, the game is prone to inciting aneurysm, but it's playable—and winnable —without a nuclear engineering degree. Seriously, very shortly after this game, developers took a dark turn and started making games ludicrously complicated rather than paying attention to the basics. Total Annihilation was one of the last great sci-fi games where the point was playing rather than micromanaging profoundly unenjoyable systems. TA is not without faults. Which is to say that the pathing/'drunken sailor' algorithm is sometimes a contradictory insult towards player sanity. Like, no, I did not in fact want to send my commander into the submarine-infested water in order to avoid a single tree on its way to an inland structure. And no, I don't want my selected units to run around in a self-destructive nimbus of chaos while trying to navigate a not-especially-narrow mountain pass. But, I mean, the game was made in 1997, for computers that don't measure up to modern mobile games. The jank is excusable, you can work around it, and it can be used to train your capacity for patience. To an extent. This is a game from a bygone era, but it's a damned good one.

The grandaddy of large scale combat RTS Total Annihilation is a classic 90s RTS that still holds up well in 2026. It’s one of my favorites, alongside Warzone 2100 (WZ2100 rules, you should try it). If you're searching for an RTS to get lost in for 50 hours before you know it, Total Annihilation is the perfect choice. TA delivers engaging gameplay and a diverse unit roster to keep things interesting. Units range from humanoid robots to heavy tanks, ships, and planes, each filling a unique role. This creates a rock-paper-scissors dynamic, offering tactical variety. Resource management isn't complex, but it's deep enough to stay engaging. The graphics show the game's age, though not in a negative way aside from occasional glitches at resolutions above 1080p. The sprites remain well-drawn, and many units include detailed animations. The music, composed by Jeremy Soule—known for his work on Skyrim—is as grand as the battle. The game features a system that dynamically changes the music based on the on-screen situation, nicely complementing the atmosphere. The story is... kinda wacky. It's not the main draw, but it's still interesting. If you're looking for a great story, go play Expedition 33. Of course, aspects like unit AI, audio glitches, and resolution issues, along with a lower unit count, show the game's age. But hey, what are you expecting from a game from 1997 that's less than 500MB? And, let's be real, AAA games these days have more issues. In summary, Total Annihilation’s enduring brilliance lies in its gameplay. Its strategic depth exceeds that of many newer games, and it helped define the RTS genre, paving the way for mid-2000s classics (which, sadly, aren’t really classics by RTS standards). If you enjoy large-scale RTS titles like Supreme Commander—a spiritual successor to TA—or other Spring Engine-based games, don't miss the original that set the standard.

I played the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game as a kid prob thousands of hours. I see comments of people asking for a modern version. check out BAR - beyond all reason it is almost a perfect version of TA but modern and better balancing. its also free but not on steam.

Classic RTS and brings back memories of playing it back in 1997. It still holds up today as well if you are an RTS fan and have never played this game or haven't played it since the late 90's. Note that I had issues on the game loading screen where the game would crash back to desktop. The only solution was to play it in a lower resolution (640x480) until I downloaded this patch: https://github.com/gammata/TA-Unofficial-Patch-Install?tab=readme-ov-file I thought I'd post it here in case anyone else has the same issue playing on Win 11.

The best RTS ever made by a long margin. Shamefully overshadowed by Blizzard's trash at the time.
