Earth 2150 Trilogy, developed by Reality Pump Studios and published by Topware Interactive and ACE, is a collection of classic real-time strategy titles that stands out not just for its scale, but for how boldly it experimented with the genre. Comprising Earth 2150: Escape from the Blue Planet, The Moon Project, and Lost Souls, the trilogy offers a cohesive yet evolving experience that emphasizes long-term planning, resource management, and systemic depth. Even years after its release, it remains notable for ideas that were well ahead of their time, though those same ideas can make it feel daunting to approach today. The central premise gives the trilogy a strong sense of urgency that sets it apart from many RTS games. Instead of focusing purely on battlefield dominance, the overarching goal is survival—Earth is doomed, and factions must gather enough resources to construct evacuation ships before the planet becomes uninhabitable. This ticking clock fundamentally changes how the game is played. Every decision, from building infrastructure to engaging in combat, is tied to a larger strategic objective. Players are constantly weighing short-term needs against long-term survival, creating a tension that persists throughout the campaign. Gameplay builds on traditional RTS mechanics but expands them significantly. Base construction, resource gathering, and unit management are all present, but they are layered with additional systems that demand careful attention. One of the most distinctive features is the modular unit design system, which allows players to assemble vehicles by combining different chassis, weapons, and components. This level of customization introduces a wide range of strategic possibilities, enabling players to tailor their forces to specific situations. However, it also adds complexity, requiring time and experimentation to fully understand its potential. The three factions in the trilogy further deepen the strategic variety. Each one operates with its own technology and philosophy, influencing how players approach both combat and resource management. The United Civilized States rely heavily on advanced automation and robotics, the Eurasian Dynasty emphasizes more traditional military strength, and the Lunar Corporation focuses on mobility and futuristic technology. These differences are meaningful, affecting not just aesthetics but the entire flow of gameplay. Switching between factions can feel like learning a new game, which adds to the trilogy’s replayability. Across its three installments, the experience evolves in both scale and difficulty. The original game introduces the core systems and establishes the narrative, while the expansions build on this foundation with more complex scenarios and increased challenge. The Moon Project shifts the setting and introduces new mechanics, while Lost Souls pushes the difficulty further, demanding a higher level of mastery. This progression gives the trilogy a sense of growth, though it can also make later sections feel overwhelming, particularly for players who are still adapting to its systems. One of the most ambitious aspects of Earth 2150 Trilogy is its approach to environmental realism. The game incorporates factors such as weather conditions, time of day, and even the gradual transformation of the planet itself. Units require ammunition, power systems must be managed, and environmental hazards can impact performance. These elements create a more immersive and strategic experience, where success depends on understanding and adapting to a constantly changing world. It is a level of detail that few RTS games attempt, even today. However, this depth comes with a steep learning curve. The interface is dated, and the game does not always provide clear guidance, making it difficult for new players to fully grasp its mechanics. Early gameplay can feel overwhelming, as multiple systems demand attention simultaneously. Additionally, the controls and user interface reflect the era in which the game was developed, lacking the refinement and accessibility of modern RTS titles. These factors can create a barrier to entry, especially for those unfamiliar with older strategy games. Visually, the trilogy shows its age. While it was once impressive as a fully 3D RTS, the graphics now feel outdated, with simple models and limited detail. That said, the scale of its environments and the dynamic elements still contribute to a sense of atmosphere. The bleak, apocalyptic setting is conveyed effectively, even if the presentation lacks modern polish. Audio design is functional, supporting the gameplay without standing out as a defining feature. Despite its technical and accessibility issues, Earth 2150 Trilogy remains a remarkable example of ambition within the RTS genre. It offers a level of depth and systemic complexity that is rare, even among contemporary strategy games. The combination of long-term objectives, environmental systems, and unit customization creates an experience that rewards careful planning and persistence. Ultimately, Earth 2150 Trilogy is best suited for players who appreciate deep, methodical strategy and are willing to invest the time needed to understand its systems. It is not an easy or immediately approachable game, but for those who engage with it fully, it offers a rich and rewarding experience that still feels unique. While its age and complexity may limit its appeal, its ideas and execution ensure that it remains a standout title within its genre. Rating: 8/10

Moon Project series Thanks to Steam an old popular combat game is updated and available for play again. I still have the original Moon Project 2150 game disks and instruction booklet. Along with a cd full of the maps I created in the game back then. By the way for those who don't know, maps you create need to be placed in the "Levels" folder to play them. This game is similar to the Red Alert and TA build and fight type. If you like those you'll want the Moon Project set too. Happy hunting..

Note: Requires a community patch to work on modern machines due to resolution limitations... Really great game, I can't even compare it to any other game because it's one of few games where you have a "central hub" between missions, but unlike all of those games, it can be used WHILE you're in missions too... You can save any vehicles you produce in a mission by loading them up in your transport and sending them home, then take those same vehicles into any mission at any given time...

This game was ahead of its time in every way, few RTS's have repeated its brilliance. great campaign, great maps, great story, solid mechanics, and with three factions that all work differently but are still all well balanced. The only issue is getting it to work on modern equipment.

For me, Earth 2150 is one of the greatest RTS games ever. While the gameplay has its flaws - especially because of the pathfinding and rather stupid unit AI - it's still fun. There are many features you don't see often in other games: - the possibility to fight in underground tunnels you can dig yourself - temperature that influences unit values (laser heats up units faster if the temperature is hot) - A fully operational HQ that is connected to your mission maps by air transport (so you can build, e.g., additional units at the HQ and send them to the mission) - strategic level ressource management (you have to build a spaceship to finish the game and must decide how many funds you invest in the ship and how many you use directly in the missions - can finish the game long before last mission if you are manage it good) - The possibility to game on even if you lose a mission (maybe you have to accept the resource loss and have to work harder after that) The game features 3 completely different factions with different units, styles of resource farming, tech, and so on, but all feels very balanced to me (casual player). The graphics are, of course, outdated, but I personally think it's still nice. There are very nice light and weather effects - revolutionary at the game's release date. And, the best for last: It's atosphere is just gold. The dark, bleak setting of a devastated world that will be destroyed in less than a year - I really felt that, more than in any other game. For me, one of the GREATEST apocalyptic settings that I have ever experienced!
