Total Tank Generals, developed by Noobz From Poland and published by 505 Games, is a turn-based strategy game that wears its influences openly while trying to refine them into a more streamlined and approachable experience. Rooted in the traditions of classic hex-based war games, it places players in command of World War II forces under the leadership of well-known generals, but it avoids overwhelming complexity in favor of clarity and steady tactical engagement. The result is a game that feels familiar almost immediately, yet still manages to introduce enough variation to keep its systems engaging over the course of a campaign. The foundation of the gameplay is built on hex-grid maps where every movement and action carries weight. Units operate within clearly defined limits, and each turn becomes a careful exercise in positioning, timing, and resource allocation. Combat is presented through probability previews, allowing players to assess potential outcomes before committing to an attack. This system reinforces deliberate decision-making, encouraging players to think several steps ahead rather than relying on reactive play. Terrain plays a significant role in shaping engagements, with forests, cities, and elevation all influencing how battles unfold, pushing players to consider not just what to attack, but how and from where. One of the more interesting aspects of Total Tank Generals is its approach to battlefield organization. The ability to stack units within a single hex allows for concentrated force and layered defenses, which adds flexibility to both offensive and defensive strategies. Combined with systems like morale and supply, this creates a battlefield that feels dynamic without becoming overly complicated. Units that are cut off or poorly supported quickly lose effectiveness, while well-positioned and coordinated forces can achieve disproportionately strong results. This interplay between positioning, support, and timing gives the game a satisfying tactical rhythm. The emphasis on combined arms warfare is another strength. Tanks, infantry, artillery, and air support each serve distinct roles, and success depends on how effectively they are used together. Artillery softens enemy defenses, infantry secures and holds ground, and tanks exploit weaknesses to push forward. Air units provide additional pressure and flexibility, often turning the tide of key engagements when used at the right moment. The game consistently encourages players to think in terms of synergy rather than relying on any single unit type, which adds depth without overcomplicating the system. Campaign structure provides a solid framework for these mechanics, offering multiple perspectives through different factions and commanders. Missions are varied enough to avoid feeling repetitive, often combining objectives such as territorial control, timed offensives, and defensive operations. While the narrative itself is relatively light, the inclusion of historical context and thematic elements adds a sense of authenticity that grounds the experience. It doesn’t aim to be a deep historical simulation, but it does enough to create a cohesive setting for the gameplay. Visually, the game adopts a stylized presentation that resembles a tabletop war game brought to life. Units have a miniature-like quality, and the maps are detailed without being cluttered, making it easy to read the battlefield at a glance. This approach works well with the game’s design philosophy, prioritizing clarity over realism. The interface is generally intuitive, allowing players to manage units and information without excessive friction. However, the audiovisual presentation does not always leave a strong impression, with sound design and music that feel functional rather than memorable. Where Total Tank Generals begins to show its limitations is in its long-term depth. While the core mechanics are solid, they do not evolve significantly over time, which can make the experience feel somewhat repetitive in extended play. The absence of multiplayer or more expansive modes also limits replayability, leaving the campaigns as the primary source of content. Additionally, the reliance on probability-based combat can occasionally lead to outcomes that feel inconsistent, particularly when expected results do not align with actual outcomes, which may frustrate players who prefer more predictable systems. Despite these shortcomings, the game succeeds in delivering a focused and enjoyable tactical experience. It understands its scope and executes it well, offering a balance between accessibility and strategic depth that makes it appealing to a wide range of players. It may not reach the complexity of more hardcore war simulations, but it provides enough nuance to remain engaging while avoiding the barriers that often come with the genre. In the end, Total Tank Generals is a confident and well-crafted entry in the turn-based strategy space. It doesn’t attempt to redefine the genre, but it refines its core ideas into a cohesive and satisfying experience. For players looking for a tactical game that is easy to pick up yet still offers meaningful decision-making, it delivers consistently, even if it leaves some room for greater depth and variety. Surprisingly good! Combat rewards correct tactics: Artillery and air strikes are necessary to soften up and demoralize defenders. Tanks and anti-tank guns fire from range (2 or 3 hexes) to weaken infantry and knock out enemy tanks. Infantry occupies built-up areas, forests, and rough terrain, and makes assaults against weakened foes. The game even utilizes air cover missions and anti-air guns to shoot down enemy air strikes. The game feels very right for the period and allows equipment upgrades as well as unit special abilities as they gain experience. Lots of good incentive to keep your units alive. The missions do reward faster victories, which I usually dislike, but the timing in these missions is actually possible. Really enjoying this game.
