"Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. Seek what they sought." Audiovisuals Obviously, the game is pretty old, but for the most part, due to the genre, the visuals hold up quite well. Just don't zoom in too much. As for the audio, I feel like there is a nice balance between the calm and actiony parts of the game. The music is quite nice, and the ambient sounds of fighting are immersive. Story I don't think they could have chosen a better setting for a Total War game. The fighting being contained within Japan is perfect for immersion, as it gives you a decent-sized world to play around in while also not burdening you with geopolitics. You're always aware of where and what. The story is straightforward and follows a clan's rise to the title of Shogun. How you get there is your choice, which I like since I'm big on narrative. Gameplay It took me about 14 hours to complete a single campaign session. That was on the easiest difficulty and without diving into the full depths of the game. It was a really pleasant experience, especially since the game lets you craft your own story and pace. The grand strategy aspect scratches my itch for a turn-based map game like Civ. Managing your land is not difficult, as there are only a few buildings and decisions you need to take to make your economy a world superpower. I guess that is good since it allows you the financial freedom to develop your lands as you wish, but it does lack the challenge of managing peacetime with war. The actual real-time strategy of the combat is where Total War shines, obviously. There is a reason why people usually say that Shogun 2 is in the top 3 of TW games. The combat is straightforward, balanced, and most importantly, it's really fun. I wouldn't say there is a lot of variance with the types of units, but it was a great experience, and I would only prefer Rome 2 over Shogun 2. Requirements Since the game is old, the requirements are not that special. The game will run great on any modern setup. Price I got this game during a TW sale at just 6 Euros. For that price, this is an absolute steal. I would pay up to 10 Euros for it. It's really good, even for someone who is not that into TW. For a new fan of the franchise, it will definitely be worth it. Grade Total War: SHOGUN 2 is a solid 7.8 for me. It is reminiscent of that time when games tried to be fun more than to extract profit from their consumers. It's an excellent Total War title and a good blend of real-time and grand strategy. Its age is really the only significant downside.

The praise this game has received in the past is probably enough to make any kind of review at this point somewhat redundant. Still, after having so many hours of fun with this game I really want to let people know that this game truly deserves all the praise it has gotten. Arguably the twilight title of the CA golden age, back when they genuinely cared about creating art. Before the slop that was the release of Rome 2, Attila's terrible engine, the tragic fate of the saga titles and all the tumbles CA took in its attempt to make more and more money for less and less effort. Shogun 2 stands out as a true masterpiece in the strategy game gender. In a few words, the campaign has what most other total war titles lack: DIRECTION. Your path to victory is clear and fun, without feeling too easy though. Every clan feels extremely unique because of the different playstyles it encourages and its position on the map despite the lack of unit diversity. The problem with every Total War title until Three Kingdoms was always the awful AI of the enemy factions. Their decisions always felt out of character and random. In this game, the 'allies betraying you first chance they get' slop makes the game work even better considering it's about different clans wanting the seat of the Shogun. If you play on legendary difficulty (in my opinion the only way to truly enjoy total war titles) it feels like a true race to become the strongest clan in your territory, lest you get surrounded and consumed in an instant. And once you really get going and the game becomes too easy, the Shogun orders all other clans to attack you in a last ditch effort to stop you from succeeding. All that becomes 10x more fun if you have a friend to play campaign pvp with! The ultimate showdown between two clans for the fate of Japan feels legendary. The historical battles are all very fun, the Avatar Conquest Mode was an incredible addition that should have been carried over to games like Warhammer but lets be honest CA never cared for its fans that much and lets not forget, the DLC they turned into a Saga title because of how good it was. Its like they saw Fall of the Samurai, one of the best DLC they ever made and decided to taint its beauty by giving it the saga title treatment. I have 0 hope for medieval three even though part of me is desperate enough to believe. Until then, this will stand as my favourite total war game (I never played Medieval 2 since it looked like too old of a game for me but I am considering giving it a chance lately).

Total War: SHOGUN 2 My first impression of Total War: Shogun 2 was that it is a “pure” and well-balanced Total War experience. Even though the game is old and shows its age, it consistently delivers a sense of freshness to the player. The game feels serious and convincingly portrays an era of true civil war and constant chaos. The trade system feels inherently unreliable, where every clan and every province acts solely in the interest of its own survival. The game is pure and simple — war is war. No one is exceptionally powerful, everyone is human, and every outcome feels grounded and believable. This is why it makes complete sense that Total War: Shogun 2 is regarded as a legendary title. ✩✩✩✩✩

Possibly the best Total War of all time. Well balanced, fun, good mechanics and UI that still checks out in 2025. Expansions offer diversity and the main campaign itself has endless replayability. I recommend this game to anyone who loves strategy and anyone interested in real-time-strategy. This game can't be rated highly enough.
