Edit 2: it seems that the frame issues are no longer a thing on my end, so that was addressed pretty quickly So I'll start with that as a big fan of the previous installments I was so sure that with the radio silence for a long time this game would never be a thing, but after a good few years it was announced this year and released and I didn't expect it to surpass my expectations. Firstly the devs actually listened to the feedback from the demo! (I think, I might be misremembering stuff) but at least the shot types are a lot more interesting now and you can switch between them for each character, the shooting part feels really good and the stages are also designed in pretty unique ways so they feel awesome to overcome. The previous games I'd say were also really good introductions to the shmup genre as a whole, but this game also now has proper tutorials and uhh A LOT of leeway (you get a lot of resources and a barrier on demand as a safety net like in the 2nd game) said barrier on demand "Frenzy" might be a bit TOO easy to get though with the crystal consumables which you get plenty of (maybe it's balanced around stuff like Hard and Lunatic being pretty bonkers in terms of patterns?) The game looks great, even more flashy than the 2nd which I didn't expect was possible, perhaps too flashy at the wildfire segment in stage 4 (game gets really laggy there for me) music is also excellent, probably best yet with really good style (like fdf1) and amazing sync (like fdf2) And most importantly what I like the most about these games, the bullet patterns and their flavour, still best in the genre imo, can't wait to see what the extra stages have to offer in that regard as well. Overall reallyyyyy good, if you ever wanted to get into shmups, but found them unwelcoming or too difficult I'd highly recommend this one and if you're a 2hu fan (which you probably are) it's still an incredible eye and ear treat Edit: Extra stage is absolute insanity in every meaning of this word, loved it, very very very creative

I've always thought the Makuka Sai series is what the first-party Touhou games are like inside ZUN's head. No disrespect to the originals, but in a way, this is what "real" Touhou games are trying to be. This does not disappoint and is a worthy successor. As with the prior two, stunningly beautiful and clever spell cards that leave you gasping for breath when you survive them, astonishingly good music and art, a feast for the senses. From the very first spell card, it's a dazzling spectacle, and it never stops. If you like Danmaku, you would be doing yourself a disservice not to play this (and the rest of the series).

Incredible audiovisual feast. I'm a huge CAVE/danmaku fan who never really got into Touhou--the enemies tend to all look the same, the levels drag on for too long and there are too many of them, and I don't really like the music. This game, however, manages to tweak just about every little thing that I don't love about Touhou into something that I do, all while maintaining the stunning boss patterns that make Touhou special and looking/sounding prettier than the majority of shmups on the market. Genuinely, bravo. This game is an achievement that punches above its weight class and price tag in all the ways that matter. If you're a shmup fan, I'd highly recommend FDF 3.

A good entrypoint for all kinds of shmup newcomers, in as much as people say Imperishable Night is a good entrypoint for Touhou. A bit too lenient on the resource management angle, where if you're even moderately skilled for the difficulty level, you would have to be trying your hardest to die, but it is because of this that it becomes easy to recommend to enterprising individuals looking for a good bullet hell to learn. It comes with a tutorial and resources are not as important, and the game is still as of yet uncompromising with its projectile counts so there's still decent challenge for shmup enjoyers newcomers and vets alike. With the exception that all difficulties seem to be shifted to the left, where Normal seems to equal Easy in Touhou mainline and Hard equals to normal (by virtue of only having marginally sped up projectiles and nothing else), and thus people who actually enjoy things like Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom or Fossilized Wonders may be left significantly wanting. On the non-gameplay side of things, the OST is a right banger with great covers of tracks in Touhou, as well as graphics that look even better than I thought would have been possible with FDF2. Overall, it's a great game if a bit on the easy, gimmicky side.

Very cool but Lunatic seems way too easy for a touhou game, I think it's easier than Hard in the other FDF games. Should be more in line with other games once Ultra difficulty is added. Visual presentation is crazy, reminding me of something like Devil Blade Reboot. I like the more arcadey stage designs compared to what you'd expect from touhou with large enemies being destroyed back to back, bullet cancels and some maze-like sections. I see the EX stage bosses are back to MMO type gimmicks.. wonder if the devs played some Rabbit & Steel. I haven't cleared any mainline touhou game on Lunatic yet (including Imperishable Night) but somehow got this one with 7 lives left in stock my first time getting past stage 3 so that's a little silly. Apart from the low(ish) max difficulty everything is really fun though, so this is an easy recommend especially for beginners to these games.
