A thoroughly enjoyable little dungeon crawler! While much of this game could be said to be a Legend of Grimrock clone (and in a lot of ways this is true), it takes a number of cues from the Shadow Tower series. Mostly in the atmosphere, if I'll be honest; it has a very dark and foreboding air to it, complete with strange and sometimes horrifying enemies and this sense of being in a place that rejects you for daring to step foot in its labyrinthine environment. Movement is grid-based but combat is in real time, complete with having to manually block with shields and aim down sights when you need to aim. Enemies have a weird way of moving that admittedly I couldn't quite master--they bob and weave in a float-y manner, but there's enough patterns to their attacks that you can usually dodge out of the way. Usually just circling around and getting some swings in will do the trick, but there's enough surprises with some enemies to keep you on your toes. There's a lot of secrets in this game and clever little puzzles that help break up the dungeon-crawling and combat. None of them are head-scratches exactly, and rarely all that frustrating to deal with, but rewarding when you get past them. I never felt like I had to bust out a guide constantly to get through the levels, which is great. Some dungeon crawlers run on moon logic to get through their tricks and traps and I'm not here for a Sierra Adventure puzzle, and Tower of Mask doesn't ask that of you. I played on Normal difficulty, which was a pleasant enough experience for someone who doesn't play dungeon crawlers that much. If you're a seasoned veteran I'd suggest bumping up the difficulty for more of a challenge. It's not a terribly long game either, as I got through it in 10 hours--practically bite-sized for these kinds of games but I consider that a bonus. It keeps the game from getting old. For the 10-hour play time and cost of this game (a measly $11) I think it's a fun title that anyone looking for something like Legend of Grimrock or Shadow Tower will enjoy.
You are the latest fired member of Slipknot. Thrown into the death pit, you somehow survive. Now you must climb your way up through the ten levels of the tower while the other discarded beings will try to arrange your demise. Do not waver and focus on your goal... reach the highest point and exact your revenge on Corey Taylor and Clown. Tower Of Mask is a fantastic dungeon crawler with elements of survival horror. The graphics have style, the sound design is good and the gameplay is addictive. The game will take you around 10 hours to complete and I think that is enough, it does not overstay it's welcome. I loved finding all of the secrets, collecting hidden weapons, artifacts and learning about the lore behind nu metal. The only downside for me are the puzzles... some of them are cryptic and I feel like you could easily remove two hours of my game time if they were actually coherent (or maybe I'm just dumb, I love Limp Bizkit's music after all). To sum it all up, I highly recommend this title, might be my fav dungeon crawler tbh. Do not sleep on this, you will regret it. Now excuse me as Corey and Clown have some royalties they owe me as I escaped the tower and put on the mask of the IRS. They will pay.
This is pretty good. I really like it. I can't tell you yet if it gets old but it's got the atmosphere down and I've been pleasantly surprised here and there for a few hours now. The price is good. Give it a try. Keep in mind that you won't really understand all its systems right away and that's intended.
I LOVE this genre of game. This is a really good one. Movement is still grid-based, but you can look around and attack in any direction, which opens up some unexpectedly dynamic fighting and puzzling options. One thing I didn't realize until I had 60 of them is that leveling up gives you skill points to use to upgrade your stats.
