I really enjoyed this game. The rough, outdated graphics paired with the excellent sound design and deliberately clunky combat make this game very tense at times. Takes a little getting used to, but when you do it's a lot of fun. The writing in this game is also decent for what it is.

This game was literally made to piss in your cereal. Its intentionally confusing, doesn't tell you anything, puzzles and corridors are extremely confusing and frustrating. If you have no idea what you're doing the amount of mold on the walls will make it impossible to even see doors. This game is lock in or get the ♥♥♥♥ out.

Insanely good horror game. Absolutely sick mess. I played a lot of good horror games, but I can remember only few that managed to create as strangling atmosphere. Aesthetics, visuals, ambients, lighting, monsters - all this creates unique experience. Something that I especially like here - this is a fair horror. That means? - no cheap tricks and no jumpscares. Yep, not a single one. Even more, the game gives you a good introdution for local dangers and bosses either via some cool intros or using notes. Devastated environment, blood stains, rot, mud, huge breathing pieces of flesh - stuff like this will set due mood long before you will encounter real danger. Also, you don't have to wander in total darkness where you can barely see anything, like in many other horror games. Especially when you also have a flashlight or matches that last 5-10 seconds. You know those games. Nothing like that here. Locations are grim, dim, but in most cases you can clearly see all the 'beauty' of local environment. And if there are palces of total darkness - they are exactly when they should be. Earlier I heard a lot of critics about clunky combat, so I was kinda afraid that this game may end up just as form over substance. But nothing like that. After playing it myself I can shrug off those claims as an obvious skill issue. Combat may seem very simple, but such simplicity hides a set of good mechanics. You can parry or dodge attacks. And your first dodge do not cost you any stamina. You can also step aside from attack or just run around. And all attacks are perfectly readible. There is also a lot of different weapons for you to choose. They have sharp, blunt and mixed attacks. Some of them can apply poison or bleed. They have different reach, speed, damage and stamina cost. Each weapon also has it's own combo and each strike has it's own effect. Let's say, naginata is a huge, slow and sharp weapon. But when you counterattack - you do make fast and blunt attack with the other side of it's shaft. Such details are important, because different enemies have different attack patterns, weaknesses and even behavior. Let's say, skeletons are rather powerful but also absolutely dumb. And they can be destroyed only with blunt weapons. They have limited set of moves and will repeat them over and over. That's why it is very easy to parry their moves and counterattack them. On the other hand, different human-like monsters have much more variable set of moves and rather unpredictable behavior. They attack you with everything they got, may kick you with their leg, and when get hit - run away screaming, grab some weapon from the ground (plank, sword, chair), hide around the corner and wait for you there to perform sneak attack. Last time I've seen something like this in... ehm... ah right! Condemned: Criminals Origin! Lost technologies of more advanced civilisation from more than 20 years ago! Actually, there are some more good stuff, but I guess that's enough for now. Some critique? Sure. The game is kinda short. Would not mind to get more locations, puzzles and challenges. Story could also get some more work. I like the story and have nothing against open endings but still would not mind to get little more insight. The weakest aspect of the game - the bosses. Don't get me wrong, they are absolutely stunning in their ugliness. And no, no, no, I'm not saying that they lack HP or some good DMG. Everything is alright here. What I mean, they are too predictable and easy to deal with. They could have more variable and dangerous attack patterns to fit their formiddable appearance. Also, the game claims that it is a dungeon crawler and somehow people in the reviews also believe that it is a dungeon crawler, but I would not call it so.. I'd call it a survival horror, like classic RE or SH games. Would not call it as a con on it's own, but this can set some wrong expectations. But in the end - I spent great time ingame. Recently I've started NG+ and as I can see, there new monsters, weapons, armor and even dialogs, so I guess the game has some replay value. So if you like horror games, you simply can't ignore this one.
