The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay is smooth (at least for the first few sections), and the instructions are easy to follow and logically laid out. A beginner can take the time to get familiar with all the buttons and levers without being overwhelmed. The more you play, the more you will grow to appreciate the real-life train drivers for their complex and mentally demanding work. Getting the hands-on experience - albeit virtually in a video game - helps to understand the mental load on a train driver and the sheer amount of actions and steps to properly operate a railroad service. That being said, I do have some (minor) complaints about this game. Most complaints are regarding technical issues. To start, even with the lowest mouse sensitivity, the camera still moves very sensitively and swiftly, which can be disorienting and confusing at times. There are also some bugs, such as being stuck at 0 km/h for anywhere between 30 and 90 seconds for no apparent reason (doors are closed, reverser is in 'forward' mode, power is applied (e.g. P4), and the doors are closed. Perhaps there is some user-error at play but it is not obvious in that case). This (possibly) glitched state is solved or fixed when restarting the level, even when doing the exact same things in the exact same way. Another technical issue I would like to add, is the stuttering and frame rate inconsistencies. In the earlier levels, the game runs smoothly, but in e.g. Los Angeles (Union Station and surrounding area), the frame rate drops from 120-144 FPS down to a choppy 40-60 FPS. I sincerely doubt this is a hardware problem (i5 13600KF, RX 7900 XTX, 32GB DDR4, and NVMe SSD. All hardware temperatures are well below 80 degrees C). Locking the frame rate at 60 FPS somewhat reduces the stuttering due to a lower fps delta (120 to 50 is a more severe drop than 60 to 50), yet the stutters still occur and the game runs on a choppy 40-60 FPS. This one is pure nitpicking, but a speed limit of 5 MPH feels unnaturally and unnecessarily slow. When moving from 10+ to two or three tracks with switches near a station or yard, I would expect 15-25 MPH. Driving the speed limit there is PAINFULLY slow. On the other hand, driving 127 MPH does feel really good. Graphics, gameplay, design, and technical issues aside, my final complaint is rather minor and personal. There are no NS and Deutsche Bahn trains that can be driven at all or without paid DLC. I shall not be purchasing the DLCs (partly due to the technical problems mentioned above) and therefore, I will miss out on the experience. I would have loved to drive around in the ICM, DDZ, DDAR, VIRM, ICNG, SNG, SLT, FLIRT, GTW, LINT, ICE 3neo, and many others. But alas.
I would only buy this game and the DLCs if you can catch them on sale but it does scratch that acoustic "I like trains" itch. Most of the trains and routes are well done, you can play with most all of the systems, switches, and levers as well as run a variety of freight and passenger services with anything from steam engines to modern locomotives
Personally, I really like this game. As a train fan, this scratches that itch so much, i get the itch again and again. However, Maybe just buy 1 game and stick to it for a few years. A new game every year is kind of excessive, especially when there's minute new features and just more DLCs. TSW2 or 3 could've been the stopping point honestly, just new updates and DLCs to that game would have been fine. Regardless, great game.
