Dec. 2025
I need to admit something up front: I had a budget of $2, and I was going to buy For Honor, which was $1.49, but I came across this glorious, life-changing game. Tree Simulator 2023 is way better and worth every penny, and way more fun to play than For Honor! Even though I bought Tree Simulator 2023 as a joke and said, “This still looks more interesting than For Honor," and expected to get a meh, a good laugh, and 10 minutes of welp, that was cool. I fully expected to refund it, laugh about it, and move on with my life. Instead, I found myself standing silently in a digital forest at an ungodly hour, watching the sun set behind distant hills, wondering when exactly my shoulders unclenched and why I suddenly felt calm, which feels illegal for a game about being wood. Yes, you play as a tree. That is not a metaphor, a twist, or a setup for something bigger. You are bark. You are leaves. You are aggressively stationary. There are no quests, no combat, no XP bars begging you to grind. The game does not need to explain itself because it is self-explanatory. You exist. You sway in the wind. You absorb sunlight like a champion at photosynthesis. Time passes whether you want it to or not, and the game absolutely refuses to care if you are bored. That confidence, borderline arrogance, is what makes it work. At first, your gamer brain panics. You start scanning the screen for objectives, rewards, and something to do. Surely you are missing a mechanic. Surely this is a trick. But you are not missing anything. The game refuses to perform for you. It does not dangle progress or validation. It doesn't seem to ask for your attention. It just stands there with you, daring you to slow down or leave. And if you stay long enough, something strange happens. You stop waiting for the game to start and realize it already has. The forest itself is quiet in a way that feels almost rebellious. There is no mini-map yelling directions, no NPC sprinting toward you with side quests, no UI clutter trying to be helpful. Day turns to night without fanfare. Fog rolls in like an uninvited thought. Rain falls because rain falls. The world does not revolve around you, does not react to you, does not care that you are there, and that is oddly comforting. The lighting deserves absolute praise here because it is not flashy or desperate for attention. Sunlight filters through leaves as it has nowhere else to be. It feels honest, unbothered, and utterly uninterested in trying to impress you. The sound design doubles down on that restraint. Wind through leaves. Birds are doing whatever birds do. Rain tapping gently, as if it is afraid to interrupt. There is music, but it knows when to leave the room. Silence is allowed to exist, absolute silence, the kind that lets your brain stop vibrating for a moment. You don't realize how overstimulated most games make you until you play one that doesn't. You can move, technically, but only slowly and deliberately, the way a tree should. Roots shift with intention. The camera drifts instead of snapping. Everything has weight: no twitch reflexes, no button mashing. The game quietly forces you to ask a dangerous question. Do I actually need to move right now? More often than not, the answer is no. And that realization hits harder than it has any right to. Then there is multiplayer, which sounds absurd on paper and becomes one of the least toxic online experiences I have ever had. Hundreds of other players, all trees, standing around in shared silence. No trash talk. No grieving. No voice chat chaos. Just quiet coexistence. It feels less like multiplayer and more like a silent support group for people who need to take a break from trying so hard for a while. Customization exists, but it never feels like a monetization trap. You can tweak your tree’s look and vibe, but there is no battle pass, no premium bark DLC, no “Legendary Neon Crypto Oak.” You are not a brand. You are not a flex. You are just a tree. Existing. Which, in 2025, feels strangely radical. Seasonal modes follow the same philosophy. Halloween does not scream “EVENT.” Winter does not explode with fireworks. The seasons arrive quietly, as they do in real life. Leaves fall. Snow settles. Darkness lingers longer than you expect. It feels less like content and more like time passing, which is rare and honestly beautiful. Here is the thing, though. You will laugh at this game. You will laugh when you realize you paid money to stand still. You will laugh trying to explain it to friends who immediately judge you. You will laugh when you catch yourself emotionally attached to a digital tree. And then, somewhere between the fourth sunset and the second rainstorm, the joke fades. The game stops being funny and starts being something else. Something quiet. Something sincere. Because Tree Simulator 2023 does not distract you from your thoughts. It invites them over and offers them tea. You start thinking about time, about stillness, about how exhausting it is to be productive, even in games, all the time. It does not fix you. It does not motivate you. It does not optimize you. It just lets you exist. And somehow, that feels like mercy. This game is not for everyone. If you require constant objectives, explosions, or validation for blinking, you will likely dislike it. But if you are burnt out, overstimulated, or want a game that does not demand anything from you, this is a minor, quiet miracle. I came for the meme. I stayed for the stillness. I left feeling weirdly okay. Ten out of ten. Wood root again. 🌲

Are you looking for an action packed game with puzzles and drama? Then don't get this. Do you want to be a tree? This is perfect. A great game to get a ton of people to cram into a tiny map and run in circles as personalized tree. It's what it says on the box.
