Tricolour Lovestory is an emotionally driven visual novel that attempts to blend artistic expression, teenage angst, and the wistful charm of youth into a deeply introspective narrative. Developed by HL-Galgame and originally released in 2017, the game positions itself in the genre of high school romance, but it does so with an unusually reflective and melancholic tone. Set in the fictionalized River City in the autumn of 2005, the story follows an introverted young man breaking free from the shadows of a troubled home life. As he enrolls in an elite fine arts class, his life becomes intertwined with two very different girls: Violet, a quiet and enigmatic transfer student with an icy demeanor, and Daisy, a cheerful and warm-hearted childhood friend who has long harbored feelings for him. This central triangle forms the emotional crux of the narrative, but the game is more about the journey than the destination. At over a million words, Tricolour Lovestory is dense—almost novelistic in its approach. Its sheer length allows for a slow, contemplative development of its characters, which gives them emotional depth rarely seen in shorter visual novels. Rather than rushing through key moments, the game lingers on the day-to-day experiences of adolescence: shared glances across a classroom, quiet conversations in art studios, fleeting brushes with creativity, and the occasional confrontation with deeply buried trauma. While this can be incredibly rewarding for those seeking immersion, the game’s pacing may be challenging for players used to tighter narrative structures. It doesn’t strive to be dramatic or sensational; instead, it embraces the mundane, occasionally veering into territory that might feel like filler but often works to paint a realistic portrait of youthful longing. Artistically, Tricolour Lovestory is beautifully composed. Its visual style echoes the emotional tenor of its script—muted, painterly, and nostalgic. The game is accompanied by a full Mandarin voice cast, whose performances help bring depth and subtlety to the characters’ emotional arcs. The soundtrack, provided by Project Lights, complements the mood with gentle, melancholic compositions that rarely demand attention but always support the tone. The CGs (computer graphics) are of notably high quality and often used effectively to emphasize key emotional beats. For a game priced extremely modestly on Steam, the production values are shockingly high, and it’s easy to see why players describe it as a hidden gem. But the experience is not without its flaws. Chief among them is the game’s English translation, which is, by most accounts, one of the weakest aspects of the international release. The script suffers from machine-translated English, with frequent grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, and even confusing misgenderings or name swaps that can break immersion. While the core story remains understandable, the clumsy translation strips many scenes of their intended emotional nuance. Some passages come off as unintentionally comical or stilted, undermining the delicate tone the original script likely aimed to preserve. For non-Chinese-speaking players, this barrier can be significant. It’s a shame, because underneath the flawed localization is a heartfelt and sincere narrative that clearly had care poured into its creation. Despite the language issues, the game has managed to foster a devoted fanbase. Reviews on Steam remain overwhelmingly positive, with players often praising the emotional weight of the story and the strong character writing. It’s easy to see why. Even with its flaws, Tricolour Lovestory has a rawness and sincerity that sticks with you. There are no elaborate plot twists or fantastical story mechanics here—it’s just a quiet meditation on love, memory, and growing up. For players patient enough to sink into its slow rhythm, the game offers an experience that feels remarkably personal and emotionally genuine. In recent years, the release of the Complete Edition attempted to improve some aspects of the game, such as adding a more stable engine, updating CGs, and supporting more subtitle languages, including Traditional Chinese and revised English. It also introduced a danmaku-style bullet screen commentary feature and mobile sync support. However, this edition received a more mixed reception. Many of the original fans appreciated the upgrades, but the changes didn’t resolve the core issues with the English script. Worse still, the lack of compatibility with previous saves and achievements frustrated some returning players. It’s clear that while HL-Galgame made an effort to modernize and improve the game, certain foundational flaws remain difficult to patch post-launch. Ultimately, Tricolour Lovestory is a visual novel that resonates most with a specific kind of player—someone willing to forgive its translation issues in favor of immersing themselves in a long, slow-burning emotional tale. It isn’t flashy, and it certainly doesn’t follow many of the genre’s more dramatic tropes. But there’s something honest in its portrayal of youth and emotional growth, something vulnerable and real that lingers long after the credits roll. It’s not perfect, and it’s not for everyone, but for those who connect with its quiet beauty, Tricolour Lovestory can be a surprisingly profound experience. Rating: 7/10

Story is a bit weird and sometimes not logical Also, if you don't like reading large amount of text, I don't recommend you playing this visual novel, since it might be boring to read But with this price to get about 20hr+ of story, i think it's pretty cheap

Tricolour Lovestory is the first Chinese visual novel ever that I've read. and even though I barely remember any details (it's been over 4 years), I remember it was fun to read most of the time. That geeky friend, I forgot his name, was quite funny and smart, and he's always got your back. Daisy is very sweet cute and funny, and I liked her scenes the most. Amazing voice actors for everyone, except the protagonist, who has no voice sadly, but that's the standard in visual novels. Violet I didn't like too much, because it was hard to relate to her. The story itself was relatable though because it deals with real world issues, like bullying at school, fear of failure, and conflict with or even among parents. I count the soundtrack among the better ones. and still listen to it often with other VN OST's. Hell, I'm listening to it right now, which is why I thought about reviewing this game. It's also very cheap, as is the visual novel itself. In case you mind, I've heard the English translation is very bad. I tend to see poorly written English as unintentional comedy. There's no way to switch between English and Chinese without reinstalling the whole game, so you gotta commit. I read it in Chinese which is why it took me 200+ hours to read this 50-hour visual novel. I'd say it was worth it.
