Absolutely loved this game! Perfect for playing with a friend or two. The puzzles are brilliantly designed and can be solved in countless ways depending on how creative you get with each character’s abilities. For a 2D platformer, this was way more fun than I anticipated. I was genuinely impressed at how entertaining and engaging it stayed throughout.

Trine is simply an excellent game, and even years after release it still stands as one of the standout platformers on Steam. It’s the kind of game that immediately grabs you with its charm and then keeps you hooked with smart, well crafted gameplay. The artistic design is a huge part of its appeal. The world is vibrant, colorful, and almost storybook-like, with beautiful environments that feel alive and magical. A lot of players still point to Trine as one of the best looking 2.5D platformers, thanks to its lighting, physics, and attention to detail. But it’s not just nice to look at the levels themselves are thoughtfully designed, making full use of the game’s mechanics. The core gameplay revolves around switching between three characters a wizard, a knight, and a thief each with unique abilities. This system is what really makes the game shine. Puzzles and platforming sections are built around using these abilities in creative ways, and while the mechanics are easy to understand, there’s a lot of depth in how you combine them. You’re constantly swapping between characters, and the balance is well done so that each one feels important rather than optional. Another area where the game gets a lot of praise is its accessibility. It’s easy to pick up, but still engaging, making it enjoyable whether you’re playing solo or in co op. Multiplayer, in particular, adds a fun layer of chaos and cooperation, as players work together (or accidentally get in each other’s way) to solve puzzles. It’s also worth highlighting the overall polish. For a relatively affordable game, the level of care is impressive. Controller support is excellent, the tutorial is clear and accommodates both keyboard and controller players, and the interface is clean and easy to navigate even in multiplayer. These small details go a long way and show the developers really put effort into making a complete, player-friendly experience. If there’s any downside, it’s that the combat can feel a bit simple compared to the puzzle solving, and the game isn’t especially long. But honestly, those are minor issues in what is otherwise a very well rounded experience.

TLDR: A charming fairytale platformer with clever physics puzzles and three distinct characters that play off each other well. Simple, fun, and easy to recommend on sale. PROS: ➕Physics-based puzzles ➕Music ➕Fairytale vibe ➕Skills/Items add a nice touch of progression NEUTRALS: 🔹Story could be better, especially the characters, they could be fleshed out more CONS: ➖Epic DRM is a thing on this old game? ➖Precision keys are helpful on KBM, but platforming isn’t as great ➖Lack of enemy variety ➖Low replay value Content (Game world/Narrative) – The game world is a side-scrolling 3D environment that is of linear direction. There are some good hidden areas and secrets to be found, but the majority of the time, it’s a single path forward with no extensive exploration. Throughout the game, you visit a variety of locales, like a forest, castles, and lava-filled caves. The narrative is present, but only seems to serve as an objective. It’s not deep and I would have preferred it to be more fleshed out, especially the characters as there’s not much dialog to be had. It’s a very fairy tale setting with even the ending concluding with a happily ever after . Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – The mechanics are based around puzzles and combat. I’d estimate it’s about a 70/30 split, in favor of puzzles. You have 3 characters - Wizard, Thief, and Knight. The Wizard specializes in conjuring platforms and moving items, not very much in combat. The Thief is ranged attack with a bow and grappling with a hook claw. The Knight is close-quarters combat with a shield. What I found great is the physics-based puzzles. Despite the game world being linear, there are usually multiple ways around a puzzle. For example, often times an EXP globe would be out of reach, so instead of trying to find a way up there, I could knock it down with objects. The game also has a simple skill progression and item system with loot that slightly enhances character abilities. This is a nice touch, but normally very simple and optional. The difficulty I found to be easy. I rarely got stuck on any puzzles, and combat is generally a breeze. I like with the different character abilities, I was always ready to go with a solution. Graphics (Quality/Technical) – Despite how old it is, I think the game aged well. It looks good. I’d say a solid PS3-era look. On the technical side, it runs fine, with a few small areas of slowdown. I played the game maxed with there being only a few simple graphic options. I didn’t notice too many bugs, the most common ones was enemy pathing with enemies constantly getting stuck. 1440p @ 240hz | installed on SSD Audio – Good audio, I enjoyed the music. It has a real fairy tale vibe. There is voice acting, it’s not a lot, just a couple of sentences before each level and the narrator. But it’s good. Replay Factor (Longevity) – Not a whole lot of replay value. There are achievements, but as far as I can tell, nothing new from replaying. Final Verdict – Trine is a side scrolling puzzle platformer with combat sprinkled in. The gimmick here is that you play three characters as one and constantly shift between them to either prevail in combat or solve puzzles as each character has their own unique abilities. I really liked the setting and the physics-based puzzles. While there was nothing overwhelmingly difficult, I felt that each objective showcased a combination of the characters abilities. Using the Wizard to conjure a platform that the Thief can use to swing on is one of many possibilities to reach areas that would normally be impossible. There’s not a lot to dislike here, as I think Trine is a solid all-around game. I’d say the lack of enemy variety can get old, and the controls can get a bit iffy. Despite it being a platformer, I chose to use KBM over controller and I loved the aiming, but admittedly, some of the controls are frustrating, like levers and platforming. Overall, I do recommend Trine, I found it to be a fun adventure with good puzzles. Recommend? (Price) [Y/N] Yes $15 is very high for a game this old, I think base price should be $10 at most. Sales go as low as $1(!), so at that price, it’s a super easy recommend. You can find my curator page here: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Synik_GR

Trine, developed and published by Frozenbyte, is a standout action-puzzle platformer that combines enchanting visuals with clever gameplay mechanics. Released in 2009, it offers players a captivating experience set in a richly detailed fantasy world where magic and mystery intertwine. The story revolves around three heroes—Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the Thief—who are magically linked by an artifact called the Trine. This connection is the foundation of both the narrative and gameplay, as each character’s unique abilities are essential for progressing through the game’s intricate puzzles and platforming challenges. The core gameplay revolves around switching between the three characters on the fly, each bringing a different skill set to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. Amadeus can conjure and manipulate objects, creating platforms or levitating items to assist in traversal. Pontius is the muscle of the group, wielding a sword and shield to fight enemies and break through barriers. Zoya’s agility and her grappling hook allow for dynamic movement, enabling access to hard-to-reach areas. This trio-based mechanic encourages creative problem-solving and exploration, as many puzzles require combining their abilities in thoughtful ways. The physics engine adds a layer of unpredictability and freedom, allowing players to experiment with different solutions rather than following a strict path. Visually, Trine is a feast for the eyes. The game’s hand-painted, storybook-like environments are richly detailed and filled with atmosphere. From lush forests and shimmering lakes to crumbling castles and shadowy caverns, every level feels like a piece of art brought to life. The lighting and particle effects enhance the magical ambiance, creating a world that invites players to explore its secrets. The fluid animation of characters and environmental elements further immerses players in this fantastical setting, contributing to a sense of wonder throughout the adventure. The musical score, composed by Ari Pulkkinen, complements the game’s fantasy theme perfectly. The orchestral tracks shift seamlessly between serene melodies that underscore exploration and more intense, dramatic pieces during combat or high-stakes moments. This dynamic soundtrack plays a significant role in enhancing the emotional tone and pacing of the game, making each encounter and puzzle feel meaningful. While Trine is highly praised for its innovative design and artistic presentation, it does present some challenges. The reliance on physics-based puzzles, while rewarding, can occasionally lead to moments of frustration when solutions are not immediately clear or when the physics behave unpredictably. Additionally, some players have encountered technical issues, such as performance drops or minor bugs, especially on less powerful systems. These issues, however, are relatively minor and do not overshadow the overall quality and charm of the experience. In summary, Trine is an exceptional blend of puzzle-solving, platforming, and storytelling wrapped in a beautifully crafted fantasy world. Its character-switching mechanic adds depth and variety to gameplay, while the stunning visuals and evocative soundtrack create a memorable atmosphere. Despite a few technical hiccups, the game remains an engaging and imaginative adventure that appeals to both casual players and fans of the puzzle-platformer genre alike. Trine’s combination of creativity, challenge, and artistry makes it a timeless title worth revisiting. Rating: 9/10
