A game with a unique idea and identity, but held back by clunky mechanics and weak writing (story & dialogue) Overall: 7/10 (It’s not the best, but it still has room to improve in the future)

If I have to describe the game, it would be one word, charming. If you hate the game, there's valid reasons for it. The combat is janky, the graphics is a mess, the minigames are bland, the models are way too different then in-game art, over-scaled are mostly in-store assests, the ui is clunky, the music is generic, and the stealth is absurdly broken and more to list. But I've never played something I can closely relate to. I'm a Malaysian, but most jokes and reference are something I personally, and culturally speaking, get. I've played my few shares of western and eastern games to learn about their culture, but not about mine. Indonesian and Malaysian are a bit different, yes, but not as much as Malaysia and America. Maybe Upin Ipin Universe, but that game is dull, and boring as hell. Ofc there's also well made Malaysian game like Rythm Doctor, Simuclara or Gigabash, but those aren't reflective of the culture. If you aren't people in those regions, I don't recommend it. There's game with better combat, like Sifu, or story, like Elden Ring. But if you are, it's a huge recommend. The game isn't long, like 4~5 hours unless you want to grind for achievement, it's also pretty cheap as well.

As an Indonesian player, this game feels very special to me. Troublemaker successfully brings Indonesian high school culture into a beat ’em up game, from the language, characters, humor, to the overall atmosphere. The local nuances are strong and relatable, which makes the experience unique compared to similar games. The combat system is fun and has a decent variety of combos, although sometimes it can feel a bit stiff and less responsive. The story is simple but enjoyable, especially if you appreciate games that focus more on style and setting rather than deep narrative complexity. Overall, this is a solid indie game and a great example of Indonesian developers showcasing local culture in a global platform like Steam. It’s not perfect, but it has charm, personality, and a clear identity. I would recommend this game, especially to players who enjoy beat ’em up games and want to support Indonesian-made games.

I was torn for a while as to whether to give this a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down. Troublemaker was a very good game and I enjoyed the short but fun experience. I'll go over both my positives and my negatives and hope you can make your own conclusion. The game was fun, the characters are unique and memorable (with Richard being my favorite). The dialogue is meta and well written for the most part, and I enjoyed the numerous easter eggs scattered throughout the game. The actual combat was fairly easy to understand and get the hang of, though I did admittedly get my first loss during the tutorial boss lmao. I pushed through and beat the game anyway, because it was worth it. The downsides are... the game is short. I beat the entire story in like 8 hours. The game itself thinks it was 13, but steam says 7, and I'm not entirely sure. Regardless, I feel like I got a bit catfished; the game plays more like a visual novel with exploration and combat sprinkled in. The Raise Your Gang subtitle of the game isn't an indicator of gameplay at all, as you never really raise any of your friends' stats or abilities in any way throughout the game. There's a specific portion of the lategame where you have to play as the three of them briefly, utilizing the skills they excel in, and it's well done, but it was very frustrating to get through. Additionally, when you are allowed to walk around, it's actually kind of clunky, and the controls didn't seem perfectly intuitive. There is no menu that shows your stats and stuff, so you can enter a battle and be below half health despite sitting on healing items simply because you can't use them out of battle or check your health or anything like that. They also repeatedly do what I'll call a Superhot-like Text Box that flashes on screen as the gameplay massively slows down for a moment to make you read it before it goes away. While mildly annoying at worst, it was perfectly manageable until that previously mentioned section where I had to try again over and over and over to bypass the "mandatory" stealth section. Finally, as the last "downside", the developers are apparently not "perfectly" fluent in English, as there were definitely a few sections of dialogue that looked.... rough, to say the least, but 99.99% of the time, the meaning of the dialogue was understood despite typos or grammar mistakes. I assume that wouldn't happen in Indonesian, but I do not speak Indonesian. Overall, the game was good, and was fun, and I look forward to seeing where these developers go from here, but it was definitely not without it's flaws; while minor on their own, each added up. Final Rating: 7/10, kontol.

The negative reviews of this game are all right. If you want to know why, go read 'em. That being said, if you're into delinquent manga or manwha and Yakuza games, you won't be too upset. Yes, there's a lot of jank. Yes, Budi will be cursing every two seconds, and yes, the characters range from inconsistent and annoying to average in terms of two-dimensional writing. Yes, some of the minigames are downright unfair (bird minigame). The sound design in fights is so flat, it makes you feel like you're slapping soggy steaks in a gym locker with a piece of paper instead of throwing a punch. The voice acting can be spotty. There's a ton of padding, and fighting for the sake of fighting. The translation isn't the most natural, and there's a lot of texting speak and memes just kinda shoehorned in there for kicks. ...I'll bet you're reading this and wondering "then why the heck are you recommending it?" One reason: the jank is all a plus because it's the funny kind of jank. The combat stutters are the fun cheesy kind. You never know what kind of thing the characters are going to say next, even if it's lame. Fights are enjoyable enough that you don't get too tired of the padding. There are a ton of little details around the map that really show the developers put care into making it. The graphics are great too, with solid 3D visuals and fun 2D character portraits that are very expressive. Each character has a lot of variation in their portrait (maybe even more than necessary), which again shows that there's care put into the game. Whether you like what they made or not, the devs definitely tried. They put out the kind of game that they wanted, and it's actually finished. That's hard to do. Respect to them for that. Also, side tangent, but Richard is great. His voice actor delivers the lines with all the relish you'd expect of an edgy kid selling contraband out of his Nike backpack in between periods. I liked his writing a lot more than all the other characters, and whenever he said something I would always listen because I knew it'd be worth my while. Richard is definitely the best part of this game. Troublemaker isn't high art. This game won't change your ideas on gaming or help you achieve nirvana, but that's alright. Sometimes, in between the Fromsoft titles and the psychadelic rpgmaker games, you need a fun little palette cleanser to turn your brain off to. This is that game. If you saw the trailer and thought it looked neat, then buy it on sale. TL;DR It's not the best, but it's the fun kind of "not the best". And it has Richard.
