April 2026
I can confidently say Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is a good game, not the best, not the worst in the series. I just feel like with so much change, especially in the side contents, this shouldn't be called Kiwami at all. Other Kiwami games, including Ishin, have changes to main story, recast, substories, etc but not to this level. Yakuza 3 Remastered has a problem of too many substories that are quite boring and too quick to finish but to be fair, there are plenty of good substories in the original 3 like Silver Screen Dragon, Murder at Cafe Alps, or the bits about Rikiya's childhood friend and other story ones like adopting Mame, Taichi's wresting match and even Yonashiro could still appear in this one, just have him be the final training match and reveal that he is Miya-san's uncle or something. There's so much side content that are cut just for the sake of it. Imo, if the devs really want to make a Yakuza 3 Reimagined, they should have stuck with that and make the whole game very different than the original because now you have the problem of main story that is largely 80% faithful but side contents that are 20% faithful. It's like they can't decide if they want to stay faithful or not, that is the problem. That's not even counting errors like somehow the knife on Lau Ka Long's boot is now gone which is absolutely wild. That said, all the new additions in K3 are great, the new cutscenes involving Kanda in the main story of K3 is absolutely wonderful. Rikiya's VA really tried his best and his version grew on me even though I still think the original's character design is still better and the cutscenes that were just texts before now got proper voice acting which is great and flows naturally. Nakahara's new design is equal imo with the original. I think the new Hamazaki is better than OG simply because he is more of a schemer who always deals with the devil now and with his short stature, he obvIously can only rise through the ranks with schemes. Hamazaki's new version is better simply because now he's more believable as a schemer. The new stuff like Morning Glory minigames (and every kids' substories) is a highlight in Kiwami 3 because it fleshes out all the kids equally, Biker minigame is fun, chaotic and quite wholesome and how they flesh out Kiryu's neighbors are wonderful. Karaoke tracks are great although Kamurocho Lullaby is missing, the cutscenes look wonderful although a lot of scenes are darker in terms of lighting for some reason, Combat is a bit better than the original or remastered. At first, I didn't enjoy it, found the flow between Dragon and Ryukyu to be weird but when I found out you can follow any Ryukyu's finishing blow with charged light (Nunchaku) or charged heavy or cancel with style switch, it finally clicks on me. Dragon is a mix between pre and Dragon Engine's DoD which is mostly nice. Its grab is the best in the series since everything has a purpose with grabs now. I like that bosses are more challenging but imo they should've made bosses aura to be quicker to break and when they're broken, they should have no guard breaking moves or moves that have superarmor. There are bugs like sometimes juggle just stops after 3rd attack but if you quickstep attack somehow the juggle continues and the Rush Combo A & B finishing blows in Dragon style don't knockdown or juggle enemies are questionable design decisions. But overall I found this combat to be not as annoying or boring as Y3Remastered, although if K3 just reused Gaiden's combat, it would be better. My core problem in K3's combat is Dragon Boost forces you to do finishing hold now unless you do juggle with reversals or Rush Combo A Ryukyu and how Ryukyu looks out of place because in all Kiryu's games, weapons are always optional, now it's not and the style feels forced especially that there's no new action sequences with Ryukyu Style. Dark Ties is pretty good as a companion piece. The only issue is that it should be longer, at least as long as Gaiden or Pirate Yakuza are imo given their marketing said so. But what is in the game (in terms of main story and Good Deeds substories especially) is stellar. The writing for Mine, his relationship with Daigo and Kanda are very well written. His cynical view about humans in general is a stark contrast to Kiryu which is great. I have issue with the execution on how he survives but given that Y7 and 8 already had characters from Yakuza 3 survived, I'm not suprised Mine has the same fate. I just hope he will be given more big role in the future because he is great both as an anti thesis to Kiryu and a great bridge for the stories to explore underworld syndicate. His combat is also pretty good with hidden tech for combo, juggle and jumping to other enemies. That said, I wish he has 2nd fighting style but his Dark Awakening is essentially his 2nd style I guess since all of his movesets are altered. What I find most disappointing are Colisseum and Dynamic Intros. Both in K3 and Dark Ties, all the colisseum matches are just time attack match with 3 enemies in a row or 2-3 enemies at the same time, it's boring and the enemies' hp are often bloated plus they don't have info descriptions that is always a staple in the series. There's no battle royale match or different ring with electrical or fire hazard, there's nothing creative in this Colisseum which is baffling because Kiwami 2 and Gaiden have variety of matches. Other thing is it is too faithful in terms of Dynamic Intros that it just reuse all the dynamic intros in the original and slap a new effect on top of it. Coming from playing Kiwami 2 with many new Dynamic Intros, this one feels so bad in comparison. In an ideal world, K3 would be the definitive edition for people who wants to play Y3 if it just followed the formula laid out by K1 and K2 even with some changes or recast plus with Dark Ties. This is clearly a budget project with rushed production. But I still think much like Y3 Remastered, Kiwami 3 is still a pretty good game with glaring problems here and there. TLDR: Lots of good things in this game but a lot of them is coupled with a lot of "but ..." or with the cost of removing/replacing memorable side contents from the original game. UPDATE: some mods that I recommend: YK3 Enchanced, it removes the blue filter from the game. Normally I don't mind with filter, just like I don't mind Kiwami 1/2's green filter but in Kiwami 3, it's not consistent. One second you go from unfiltered cutscene to suddenly having very strong blue filter on gameplay. That said, that mod also comes with issues such as the orphanage looks too dark at night/too bright in the afternoon and there's new inconsistencies when you go to Kamurocho in Chapter 4/5 where there's cutscenes that look great with the blue filter and now you switch to unfiltered gameplay's look. Better Nightview, it brings back the buildings to be taller in certain scenes just like the original Y3/Remastered. Juggling/Bound FIx, it removes the bug where sometimes after 3rd attack during juggling, the enemy just drops to the floor. Enchanced Intro & QTE, it essentially brings back missing dynamic intro's dialogue and makes the QTE to resemble the original QTE from Yakuza 3 (like fixing Lau Ka Long's knife on his shoes), Increased Enemy & Ally HP for New Game+. Don Quijote Theme Song restoration because the theme song is iconic. OG Rikiya Color Scheme, it makes Rikiya wears his original outfit (tbf, both new outfits in K3 look good). These mods are of course optional but can enhance Kiwami 3 a bit without overhauling the intended experience.

I think it's a good game. If you ignore the fact that Hamazaki's face model and Rikiya got changed too then yeah lol... 3 hot and handsome men are in it too! (Majima, Mine and Kiryu lol) This game had a lot of action in it and good story. Most sub storys from the original Yakuza 3 got deleted too but i don't care about the sub storys really anyway... and i don't care about caberet clubs either lol... The Girl gang biker gang wasn't that interesting but i liked the missions because you get to go on a motorbike and run people over lol... Anyway i enjoyed this game. I enjoyed the original Yakuza 3 too but it's okay if you don't like this game either too. I liked it and people say that Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii sucked but that's a great game too so there! I like both and i respect opinions haha.

after 83 hours, i can say this game is okay i guess Kiwami 3 is a 7/10 or something but Dark Ties is 10/10 for sure let's start with the good one DARK TIES Dark Ties main story is 3 hours length, but i literally loved it soundtracks are masterpiece i like yoshitaka fighting so much Hell Arena and Survival Hall is fun after playing Dark Ties, i want a Gaiden game of Yoshitaka Mine (RGG please) YAKUZA KIWAMI 3 Kiwami 3 soundtracks is meh (don't count Fly KIWAMI ver.) Bad Boy Dragon minigame ? i can't decide this is good or bad, but i prefer to saying bad Dragon of Dojima: Kiwami style is a scammy rename of original style new fighting style, Ryukyu Style is good enough with so many removed contents, changing the ending and recasting, i kinda liked it in the end, this isn't the KIWAMI i imagine or i want, Kiwami means Extreme and i believe this game is not Extreme

As of the moment I'm writing this, I find Yakuza Kiwami 3 and Dark Ties a very mixed bag, so much so that I cannot outright recommend this game without throwing in some "buts" here and there (but for the purpose of Steam's rigid review system, I will still put a "Yes" on recommending it, with reasons to be explained below). Yakuza 3 is a game that shows its age when you play the Remastered version, to the point where it discouraged a lot of new players of the series after finishing Kiwami 2. Kiwami 3 was something the fans have begged to happen for a long time. But the final product is much more than just a mere remake. It keeps many details faithful to the original game, yet also reimagines various elements, veering into the "Final Fantasy VII Remake" realm of "this isn't 100% true to what happened in the original, but it still leads to the same result". This might be the best way I can put it as to explain why RGG Studio decided to make significant changes to the story this time around. I won't spoil the ending here for new players' sake, but it is certainly not something they changed for the sake of it, and something much bigger is on the horizon. It should also be noted that it is the developers' intention to treat Kiwami 3 as its own thing and not a replacement of Yakuza 3 (even though SEGA clearly disagrees with the soft delisting of the Remastered version and only allowing you to get it as part of the full series collection); hence, the removal of many classic substories in favor of new ones should not be seen as a shameful erasure of the past, but merely a new artistic take that aims to coexist alongside the old. With that said, it'd also be amiss to not mention the things Kiwami 3 did right. Many new scenes were added that served to flesh out the existing characters, and I greatly enjoyed Show Kasamatsu's take as Rikiya. Though he lacks the innocent charm of Tatsuya Fujiwara's Rikiya in the original game, Kasamatsu embraces the character in his own way, and delivers a wonderful performance. And as hard as it may be to admit it, Teruyuki Kagawa also delivered a solid performance as Hamazaki, and I think it's important to acknowledge that in spite of his controversies. And the entire Morning Glory arc was redone in a way that allowed all of Kiryu's children to shine in their own way, without one overshadowing the other, while Kiryu's fatherhood arc is properly elevated, the way that the original game meant to convey but couldn't fully commit to. And then there's Dark Ties, a short but wonderful journey into the mind of one of Yakuza's most interesting villain characters ever written. Yoshitaka Mine's character is treated with reverence, and the writing for him remains consistent throughout the main story and the side missions, even during humorous moments. The game also does not try to convince you that Mine is a misunderstood good guy; deep down he is a rotten, broken man with twisted ideologies, yet it does not make him a full-on comical mustache-twirling villain like some other characters we see in the series. Dark Ties solidifies Mine as one of Kiryu's best adversaries, perhaps even greater than Ryuji Goda. But alas, as a standalone experience, perhaps RGG might have overshot themselves a little too far here when they claimed the game to be comparable to previous Gaiden entries; with only 3 story chapters, it is heavily padded by side quests and minigames galore, making it only slightly more meaty than Kiwami 2's Majima Saga or Lost Judgment's Kaito Files. Thankfully, the Hell's Arena mode is surprisingly entertaining and fresh enough to keep you engaged for a while, making the overall experience only just barely worth it as one half of a full game. So, the question remains: should you purchase Yakuza Kiwami 3 and Dark Ties? It largely depends. If you're a new fan and you have been wanting to continue your journey after Kiwami 2, go right ahead; it's a worthy continuation. If you're someone who has already played Yakuza 3 in the past, this game might not offer enough to be worth your time and money until a sale. And to those who have been soured by the story changes (the ending in particular), I understand where you're coming from. But, as I mentioned earlier, this change is just the first step in what appears to be a long-term plan for the future. I would suggest waiting it out until RGG Studio announces their next remake, whether it is called Kiwami 4 or something else entirely to represent the new direction; only then can we see whether Kiwami 3 is a misstep or if it will be viewed in more positive light in retrospect.
