More rogue like than souls like. Personally I like run based action rogue like elements and that was what drew me to purchase the game in the first place. Might be too simple or small for souls like players, but I dig it. At the end of the day it's a great action roguelike that's not too complicated for a great price.

//Changed my mind after playing an additional hour. I wish I could wholeheartedly recommend this game. It's very pleasant and cohesive visually, the base gameplay is fun even if it could use a few tweaks (the enemies and bosses can be VERY passive sometimes), the core mechanics are well executed. It's combat is akin to a faster DS1. But there's a big lack of content. Builds aren't much of a thing, you'll mostly just pick a weapon and armor that you like, the "level up shrines" just adding some flat stat boosts. The enemy variety is low (I think there's 7 total, not counting bosses). The level design is very barebones, with most environments serving no purpose other than being a change of scenery. Runs last around 40 minutes, and the additional difficulty levels (unlocked by beating a run) just make some enemies faster and limit your healing. Overall the experience is a bit too simple and doesn't offer enough player expression. But i do think I had a fun 2 hours playing this, and for the price I paid (5€ on sale), it's a decent deal. Go for it only if you're really itching for a Souls-like and don't mind a simpler experience.

If Tyrant's Realm had come out on PS2 like it looks and feels like, it would be considered one of the best adventure games ever made. I loved this and I look forward to seeing what else the devs can come up with.

I like the concept, I was actually developing a similar idea for a game, but I was trying to combine Sekiro style combat with Slay the Spire decision making mechanics. Scope was too big for to solo. I've very sympathetic to the genre though, so I have to give this a thumbs up. I beat it on my first run, being very familiar with the genre, and it does seem to have some additional difficulty settings. Things I have to give props for: - Some unique ideas in the boss encounters - Really faithful to DS1 mechanics, albeit no charged heavy attack - Love the PS1 graphics Things that can use a bit of improvement: - More enemy variety - Enemies can also be a bit more thematic to the biomes they're in - I like the level up mechanic but have no idea what's going on with the different categories (greed, rage, something else) I don't know if this was a solo developer, but overall it's a really solid, well rounded, well made package. I encountered no bugs and everything worked as expected.
