So this summer sale I asked myself do I want a fishing game? No, but for 2$ why not. I just sat catching fish and it didn't feel like a choir, just sat and gained my money and experience where I really found myself liking it. First time I fished since Red Dead and it's become my new therapy session for when Counter Strike is cruel to me.

This is one of those games, where a middle ground between up and down would be good. It's not bad, but it's not for me. What I like about the game: - the nice locations - the trophy room with those massive aquariums to let your fish swim around - the variety of catchable fish and the encyclopedia, which tells you, at what environmental conditions to catch it best What I didn't like: - the waiting for a fish to take the bait (yes, I know that's what fishing is all about) - if you're not at least a bit familiar with fishing, lots of things are ... well, unfamilar. The differences in rods, reels, lines, hooks, bait and so on. - and that awful music in the trophy room. If there's a way to change it, I didn't find it. Final thoughts: If you are a passionate fisher and want to spend some time doing it, when you're not actually fishing, this might be for you. I wanted to like it, but in the end I just didn't.

An easy recommendation on sale for anyone even slightly curious, and if you're keen on virtual fishing probably a decent buy at full price. Controller users - see caveats below! This was my token Fishing genre purchase from 2025's Fishing Fest and it's surprisingly fascinating. UFS is a good mix of arcade realism where you pick up a bunch of real fishing techniques but (unlike real life) actually catch fish and don't lost a bunch of tackle on each attempt. Several nice maps and fishing modes available in the base game, with extra maps and species available as DLC if you can't get enough of it after that. The small dev team is currently working on a free "Remaster" to iron out a bunch of old technical issues. This is a great game to chill with while catching up on music. It's adequately pretty, has calming nature sounds and many moments of meditative contemplation while waiting for a bite (although, generally, less than you'd expect from real life fishing). I thought the game was overly easy to start, but after a bit of progress this is probably just the first (tutorial) trout lake. Fish become less cooperative as you more through maps. Bait prices and cash rewards for catches seem a bit unrealistic, but it works with the progression system well enough. Controller players note that you'll likely want a mouse available. The game is very poor at indicating what option is highlighted in menus and navigating them on controller is often frustrating. There are no on screen controller prompts - so look in the options menu for the layout. The main catching fish part is perfectly playable with controller though, and most of the menus are usable (with a little random flailing) if you don't want to grab a mouse each time. A couple of useful controls are missing from the gamepad bindings. With Steam controller profiles it's relatively easy to add Z (Zoom) and Flashlight (I forget the binding) as additional commands for controller buttons. I suggest setting B/Square (underwater view) to send Z on long press and double press to toggle flashlight. P.S. Look up fishing reel "Drag" settings, it's a critically useful feature that (I believe) is missing from the in-game help due to being added after launch. Makes fish fighting much more manageable.

This is more realistic than other fishing simulator games I've played. You can actually see fish when they swim past if the water visibility is good enough. There are also mechanics outside of just what bait/rod you use, and there is actually some finesse to reeling it in, or your line could snap. This feels way more real than other games I've played.

PROS: -- the basic fish-catching mechanic is engaging and done just right (it's not too hard, or too easy and repetitive, also, it's a little different for every fish and has a dose of realism to it) -- the water looks great -- the sounds of the game are relaxing, almost zen-like -- there is a decent chunk of content in the base game -- you can get all the DLCs for about $35 when they're not on sale -- you need to know the basics of your fish, equipment, baits, and fishing spots in order to do the job -- on the other hand, this is not a super-realistic fishing simulation, so you won't get stuck in the nitty-gritty stuff for hours -- there is a decent amount of Steam achievements, and they are satisfying to look for in-game -- if you have even a semi-decent rig, you can cast your rod, set some alarm bells for your next catch, then press Win+D and do something else, until the fish bites -- there are custom tournaments you can organize and/or participate in, which can be so cool -- UFS is quite a chill experience overall CONS: -- it can feel a little boring and uninspired, once you're out of the honeymoon period (20+ hours) -- most of the best content is locked behind paid DLCs -- the background trees, rocks, and other landscape pieces look low-quality -- the boat-riding mechanics, graphics, and sounds are pretty bad -- when they are close to extraction, the fish you catch don't differ too much in size, visually speaking -- the game has some weird bugs (you'll see) Overall, this is an easy recommendation (if you're into fishing games), albeit it's far from a perfect game.
