Until You Fall, developed and published by Schell Games, is one of the most confident and fully realized examples of melee-focused virtual reality design, blending physical combat, roguelite structure, and striking audiovisual identity into a cohesive whole. Rather than treating VR as a novelty layer on top of traditional action mechanics, the game is built from the ground up around embodied movement, asking players to fight not just with button inputs but with deliberate, physical intent. The result is an experience that feels demanding, empowering, and deeply tactile, rewarding both strategic thinking and bodily awareness. Combat is the absolute centerpiece of the experience, and it immediately sets itself apart from more freeform VR sword-swingers. Attacks are guided and directional, requiring players to strike along highlighted vectors to break enemy defenses, while incoming attacks must be blocked precisely or avoided with well-timed dodges. Enemies are protected by shields that must be shattered before their health can be damaged, creating a rhythmic back-and-forth that emphasizes timing and positioning over wild flailing. This structure gives each encounter a strong sense of flow, turning combat into something closer to a choreographed duel than a chaotic brawl. Over time, players naturally learn to read enemy patterns, manage stamina, and maintain momentum across encounters. Weapon choice significantly shapes how the game feels from run to run. Each weapon type carries distinct weight, speed, reach, and defensive capabilities, encouraging experimentation and adaptation. Faster blades favor aggressive, mobile playstyles, while heavier weapons reward patience and precise timing. As players progress through a run, they are offered temporary augments that modify damage, stamina recovery, elemental effects, or defensive bonuses. These choices stack in interesting ways, allowing each run to develop its own identity. Between runs, permanent upgrades gradually expand survivability and effectiveness, smoothing the difficulty curve without undermining the challenge inherent to the roguelite structure. The procedural framework keeps the experience engaging over repeated sessions. Room layouts, enemy combinations, and reward selections are randomized, preventing memorization from becoming the primary path to success. Instead, mastery comes from understanding systems and maintaining composure under pressure. While the narrative context—centering on a fallen magical world and the role of a Rune Knight pushing back encroaching corruption—is understated, it provides enough thematic grounding to justify the cyclical structure without interrupting the game’s momentum. Story exists largely to support atmosphere, letting gameplay remain front and center. Visually, Until You Fall commits to a bold aesthetic that avoids realism in favor of clarity and style. Neon highlights, crystalline structures, and high-contrast color palettes ensure enemies and attack cues remain readable even in the heat of combat. This design choice is not merely cosmetic; it plays a critical role in usability, helping players react quickly without visual confusion. The synth-heavy soundtrack reinforces the game’s sense of motion and urgency, syncing naturally with the rhythm of combat and enhancing immersion rather than overwhelming it. Physically, the game demands more from the player than many VR titles, and that is both a strength and a limitation. Extended sessions can be tiring, as the game expects full arm movement, defensive positioning, and consistent engagement. However, this exertion is part of what makes victory feel earned. Success isn’t just a matter of numerical upgrades or memorized patterns, but of maintaining focus, stamina, and control. Few VR games manage to translate physical effort into a meaningful part of difficulty progression as effectively as Until You Fall. While enemy and environment variety can feel limited over very long playtimes, the depth of the combat system and the flexibility of builds help mitigate repetition. The satisfaction of improving personal skill—reacting faster, blocking cleaner, choosing smarter upgrades—creates a strong sense of personal progression that goes beyond stats alone. Each failed run feels instructional rather than punishing, reinforcing the “just one more attempt” loop that defines strong roguelite design. Ultimately, Until You Fall stands as a benchmark for VR melee combat done with intention and restraint. It proves that virtual reality action doesn’t need uncontrolled motion or gimmicks to feel immersive; instead, it thrives when mechanics respect the player’s body, attention, and learning curve. For players seeking a VR experience that combines physical engagement, strategic depth, and polished presentation, it remains one of the most compelling and enduring titles available on Steam. Ideal to sweat a little while having fun at the same time, its combat system is not based on clumsy physics like other more immersive games, it is a very arcade game and it feels good. Quite hard and addictive. I highly recommend a system to keep you stucked in one place and avoid breaking something on your room :P
