Man I miss this game. I miss when Zab would come and skullf*ck everyone and ruin my session. Too bad it died, was a 10/10. Biggest mistake the devs made was separating the theatres of war into multiple games and dividing the player base. Literally retarded move but oh well.
I find it strange that each game is stand alone. It makes sense. This is 10 years old. It's still fun. It's quite empty and the bots fill the game. Well there was one game that had 40 odd people. Glad I bought it years ago, before the price went up dramatically?! Bots are quite accurate. Attacking their trench can be hard. Other times they stand in the "No mans land" wide open, and aim. They're not perfect but they are hard. It's better to start from scratch/build using data pieces. Instead of DLC. Especially when gameplay elements or the engine is altered. Though I would only buy them on sale. There's a new one "Ottoman Front" coming out soon. That one. I might buy too. Each game is a different front. I have Tannenberg but not Isonzo. I had Isonzo, returned it. More people were playing Tannenberg. The gameplay is slightly different too. I like the squads and extra points for staying in the leaders proximity, following commands/having commands followed. You're going to need help. You can't run and gun. You run out of ammo/need to reload and there are too many enemies. For me, It runs on ultra, with shadows on high. 1080p 60fps It's nice on sale. I was playing with someone from Europe and Texas. Most people had 40-80 ping. some 170. Better connection than Ubisoft's Rainbow 6 Siege. But it doesn't really matter, you poke your head up and die. You hide in the trench and artillery blows you up. If you play the objective, you die. If you desert you die. You're going to die. It's "The Great War." P.S. People online are either silent, friendly or... unfortunately typically rude. I might say: "You again! I'm coming to get you!" and then the person calls me a name. Here I am, old as your father. I barely play, I don't have time anymore! Most people are really nice, it being a niche game and the community being small. Some people had 200+ ping and it still felt fine. Because you are running the the open and one bullet. From a tiny hole, in the mess of mud and barbed wire. Got me. Ping or not I was doomed. You run, drop prone, crawl. Stand, run, drop prone, crawl from crater to crater as everyone writhes in agony around you. Their bodies do stop bullets! Except they're your squad mate. You're all alone now!
Verdun is a very realistic WWI shooter, with impressive attention to historical detail everything from the time period and countries to the uniforms and battlefield tactics feels authentic. The gameplay really shines when you’re working with a coordinated squad, especially with friends in voice chat, where communication makes a huge difference. Pushing through trenches and advancing across no man’s land creates a completely different pace compared to the fast, chaotic action of games like Battlefield or Call of Duty. It’s slower, more methodical, and heavily focused on positioning and awareness. The difficulty is part of what makes it so rewarding most weapons are one hit kills, barbed wire is deadly, and crossing open ground requires careful timing and quick reactions. When you successfully capture a trench or wipe out an enemy squad, it feels genuinely earned. That said, the same punishing mechanics can also make the experience frustrating on off days. The Verdun Remastered update (more of a major overhaul than a full re-release) adds some welcome improvements. Small quality of life changes like clearer teammate indicators help reduce accidental team kills, while the addition of bots helps keep matches populated. New squads and cross-play support also give the game a healthier player base and more variety overall. My main issues come from how some of the systems are explained or rather, not explained. Capturing trenches isn’t always communicated clearly, so it can be confusing to know when you’re actually making progress. The squad and team ranking system is also a bit messy, with ranks shifting in ways that don’t feel intuitive. Since those ranks affect the abilities and attacks you can use, it can become frustrating to keep track of. A bit more clarity or simplification here would go a long way. It’s not always easy to get into, but if you’re willing to learn its systems and play it the way it’s meant to be played with teamwork and patience it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
